- Isafjordur is an extreme airport as its located in a fjord which requires the pilot to fly his aircraft very close to the surrounding terrain then making a full 180 degree turn on final approach just before landing. AIR ICELAND is the only airline allowed to service this airport and pilots require special training to be allowed to fly into Isafjordur Airport.
The complete Flightdeck film is nearly 5 hours long and includes 10 flights within Iceland as well as to Greenland.

I have been a fan of this airport for many years. Since 2009 :-). Even made a FSX landing video from 2009. In 2012 I actually went by car to Isafjodur. Stopped at a cafe in the harbor and told the locals that i was there for seeing a landing. The guy at the bar even called the airport to check if we could see a live landing. And he was also a pilot student and told me about the left turn with max flaps with continuous descent was critical. The locals loved I went there just for that. Great video. Thanks
Great piloting, amazing scenery! Thanks for posting 👍🇦🇺
Just Planes is truly the best aviation centric CZcams Channel. I can never get enough of the great content. Keep up the good work
You’re super kind Geoff. Thank you so much for the comment and glad you enjoy the videos. 👍✈️
Impressive and very spectacular, professional captain and first officer and that approach is expert level, thanks for sharing and hope your festive season is awesome;-))
Thank you MM. Glad you enjoyed the video and Happy 2020!
This was fantastic to watch.
200 feet...still turning...100 feet...just finishing lining up - that's incredible skill, well done!! I'm guessing, with that turn taking priority, the wind has to damn light.
All the best for 2020.
Little did we know back then. :/
Thanks so much for posting this! Flying into Ísafjörður was one of the highlights of 2019 for me, one of the highlights of my life, in fact. Much respect for the pilots of Air Iceland Connect! 💪
Thanks for watching and commenting and very cool you did this approach. It is indeed very special.
It's good to find videos of this beautiful airport. There aren't many videos filmed there and it's great to see one that includes approach, landing and taxiing to the platform. Greetings from Argentina! :)

Es bueno ver videos de este hermoso aeropuerto. No hay muchos videos filmados allí y es genial encontrar uno que incluye aproximación, aterrizaje y rodaje a la plataforma. Saludos desde argentina! :)
Indeed it’s not a place too many people go to and film but well worth it. Would be nice one day to do the approach and takeoff in the opposite direction but that’s virtually impossible to plan ahead of time.
@@justplanes Thank you very much for your reply. I hope someday you can film the takeoff in this wonderful place! Greetings!
Hello JP.....very nice teamwork....RESPECT for Captain and FO!
Spectacular views from Iceland! Many thanks again ;-))
Greetings Betsy.
Wow!! Awesome!! Beautiful scenery too! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for watching and commenting
Obviously, all Air Iceland pilots have ice water in their veins. That's how they keep so cool.
😁. Really great pilots at both Air Iceland and Icelandair. We love filming those airlines!
I love Iceland for his country
Great video footage. Great piloting. Dash8 is certainly a great airplane.
Very professional and smooth.
Awesome Captain. Thank you !
Great landing, spectacular approach! Well done! Beautiful scenery thanks so much for sharing!
Glad you enjoyed it Albert and thanks for commenting!
Wow, that was amazing!

OH BABY
What a beautiful place. And such a difficult landing, especially the approach.
usual very fine visuals looked like a very tricky approach!
Nice, very professional pilot 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
That was really neat. Beautiful airport. Thanks.
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome!
Very impressive - ice sight / Impressive nature
I love this landing, every time!
Glad you enjoyed it Robert and thanks for commenting.
Nice video! I love Iceland!
Thank you and agreed. Iceland is a beautiful country
That's a runway you don't want to miss an approach on. That's some serious flying. Not much time for a stable approach there! This is amazing.
Very good pilots!
Wooowwwww! Mind blown!!!
Fantastic made my boxing day. .have a great time ..thanku love an god bless x
Awesome. Thank you Wendy
Great video and scenery
Thanks David
Expert pilot.❤️ Great love from S.Venkateswar Patnaik, Odisha state in India
Ísafjörður has an awesome campground and you can climb this mountain beside the Airport to see airplanes landing! Ísafjörður is the departure to the most wonderful trekking ever! Hornstrandir area!
Well done
Our right wingtip is pretty much plowing into the side of the mountain, I'm going to turn left and drop altitude, we are now headed straight into the side of another mountain! Continuing our left turn and dropping more altitude. Welcome, you have landed at Ísafjörður! :)
Awesome view thank you 👍👍
Thank you Marco!
This Dash Q200 has a new modern avionics like the Q400 ! Never seen one before .
Nice landing, I was wandering were on earth you were going,
Great video reminds me of the Bhutan approach much more entertaining than my landings and one slight error here is a missed approach weather will also be a factor here especially in the Q
wow, is amazing approach view
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for commenting!
This is a special "bespoke" airport in Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. That means it was enhanced over the default airports, probably by Gaya Studios. The surrounding mountains make it very scenic. And the landing is a toughie. Lot's of cruise ships stop here.
Dannnngggggggg. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
😁👍✈️
That view !!!!!
Muy bien perfecto bonito
Thanks Aomar. Glad you liked it 👍✈️
WOOOOW
Gave me white knuckles just watching. Nice job Captain!
Thanks for tuning in and commenting!
Nice video
Muito bom
So cool the runway is side on the frozen lake 😮😮😮
I've been practising landing in Isafjordur for a long time in Xplane, very few succeed. Could you make a tutorial on the techniques to fly this airport please. I loved this airport.
Spectacular, like flying into Middle Earth
Glad you enjoyed it Chris, thanks for watching and commenting
BEFORE Isafjordur had a land-based runway. The following is a quote cited from page 47 of my book, History of the Radar Sites of Iceland. It describes how US Air Force personnel were transported from 1956 to 1959 from Reykjavik to their radar site named H-4 located on the top of Mt Straumnes. They flew in a Flugfelag Airlines converted WW2, PBY-5A Catalina.
“Those on board were told that Isafjordur had no runway and they would have to land on the water in the narrow, mile-wide, fjord adjacent to the fishing village. To make matters worse, the fjord was lined with 1,500 foot high cliffs on either side. Although the PBY-5A Catalina is a durable aircraft, it was very difficult to fly. The pilot had to constantly trim the aircraft especially when passengers moved about. The engine controls were large, requiring firm, strong hands by the captain. More important, since the plane had a low profile, landing the PBY had at least one built-in hazard. When nearing touchdown on water, the plane needed to be almost perfectly level. If not, one of the floats attached to the end of the wing would “catch the water.” When that happened, the aircraft could crash. This rarely occurred when landing on calm water, but the prevailing winds near Isafjordur were often strong. The weather at Isafjordur was usually overcast and covered with fog. On many flights the pilot would have to fly around watching for a hole in the clouds. Once located, he would dive the craft through the opening to make the approach to the sea landing. This made for a very exciting descent! In choppy seas, the PBY struck the water with a force that could jar the insides of the passengers and crew alike. The flying boat sat so low in the water that a first-time traveler would honestly believe that the plane was sinking. When the plane taxied to a stop, it was met by a motorized 25-foot Icelandic life boat which bobbed up and down next to the aircraft. John Broughton, 1959-60, related, “We were told to ‘Yump’ into the little boat. When I hesitated, the order was repeated, so I ‘Yumped.’” Once docked, they checked into a small hotel and prepared for the next day’s adventure. This first of the four stages of the journey to H-4 was actually the least adventurous. The next stage tested the nerves and stomach…”
Not for the faint-hearted Captain, thanks for the demo.
I was suppose to go to Iceland this fall but a broken femur prevented this so hoping to go next year
the stopping distance of this aircraft in unbelievable
Wow very impressive! Awesome footage!!
Nice video...APP is like CYCG but with water :-)
Thank you Matthias
I dint know that visual approach was applicable in commercial airlines because of instrument and other approaches. Beautiful to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it Ahmed
The full-length video is 4 1/2 hours long and is one of the videos I watch just for the views. The pilots go over a lot of details but the views are good enough in this video; especially the trip to Kulusuk, Greenland. I can't recommend this video enough.
That’s very cool to hear Todd. Thank you and yes. Flying around Iceland and greenland is very beautiful. Those guys are lucky
GENTLEMEN I JUST WANTED TO SAY...GOOD LUCK, WE ARE ALL COUNTING ON YOU TO LAND THIS PLANE SAFELY; "AND STOP CALLING ME SHIRLEY."
Awesome approach! It's really difficult. I tried in the simulator!
That FO has a kind of Swiss dialect. Right?
From vietnam airlines with love
Hope one day to be able to film Vietnam Airlines!
Extreme but i love it
Glad you enjoyed it Michael
Another great video by JustPlanes coming up! Never flew the dash 8 but all of our vids are on another bombardier aircraft, the CRJ! ;) Iceland is a fun airport to fly to, some great views, never done it visual though. Maybe that could be one of our next vids? :D
Cool Trailer, when does your new material come out?
@@tomlomas83 In a couple of weeks :D
Glad you enjoyed it Pilot Life 👍✈️
A similar landing took place at the old Hong Kong airport, which was called the pilot's pilot airport.
Captain looks like Hank Schrader!!!
but have you tried parking in one of those underground car parks in Europe somewhere(?) with a people carrier?
It would be interesting to know the weather limits for the approach.
Very true... I think the pilots talks about it in more details on the film... and perhaps you can also try googling it...
I’m going to see if I can pull this off in FSX and X-Plane.... :) (It will probably take me 100 tries...) ...LOL... :) Thank You for the vid!
LOL... well maybe with some good practice you will be able to land... Something to look forward to :)
It depends on the aircraft you are using for that approach.
With the Dash8 Q400 it is really really difficult. (In this video they use the Q100 when I'm not wrong).
With smaller aircraft out is no big problem.
Burkhard Bickmann ...It’s a Q-200... And I nailed it on the first try in both FSX and X-Plane... It’s not as difficult as the video makes it out to be. There are much harder approaches over in Switzerland... :)
👍🏻🙂
Thank you
I wonder if they can use the ILS in bad weather conditions?
I don't think the airport is equipped with ILS transmitter, and I think the mountains around wouldn't make this feasible either. You can fly by NDB up to the point where they turn into the fjord but at that point must fly visual approach. This means in low clouds landings must be aborted. I'm not 100% on this.
Which dash 8 is it?
TF-JMK is a Q200
It’s a 200
What's that pilots name? I'm guessing it's something like 'Captain Calm' or 'Captain Dont'seewhatthefussisabout'
His name is Jónas
!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dash- q400 ?
Q200
Why did they build the airport in such an awkward location?
To make it challenging for pilots 😜
There probably was no other location that would allow a runway long enough to accommodate airplanes of this size. And maybe they wanted to give the pilots a bit of a workout 😁✈️
@@justplanes I agree that it may be the only viable location in the area as it looks quite mountainous, however I don't believe it was done to give pilots a workout (unless that was meant in jest 😁). One of the main factors of aviation is to make it as safe as possible. No matter how good a pilot is, doing a 180 degree turn close to the ground and a mountain raises the risk factor considerably, especially during bad weather.
$$$
I'm sure this was the best location they had to built the airport, the other option is not having an airport at all.
Why do the call the runway 08 when there is clearly only one runway. Just call it The runway.
You can also land the other way
Ionut Codrin Amariei it’s still not runway 8 is it?
@@johnnycharisma162 It's physically the same runway, but when you use the other end of it, it would be called runway 26. Runways are numbered according to their direction/heading (how many degrees a compass would show if you pointed it straight across the runway). For example, in Isafjordur the runway is 8/26, which means that, if you land the same way as in the video, the plane needs to head towards 80 degrees (pretty much to the east), while landing from the other end means the plane needs to head towards 260 degrees (pretty much to the west). This naming convention is used all around the world. :)
Hoi :P
Hello
Didn´t know Bruce Willis is a pilot lol. :D
Please have more views between the pilots and not over their shoulders.
I knew I should of done better in school 🤔
when vikings found iceland and greenland they named them wrong. geenland should be iceland and iceland should be greenland
Nice video
Thank you!
