Didn't know they removed the reactor right here in Baltimore Maryland, lol. I keep learning more and more about her.

I was part of the MARAD project doing all sorts of documentation arounf 2008. Poor ship, she was born too late. Beautiful lines....

If there was no danger of radiation why remove it ?

Paranoia. 😀 The radiation from the reactor was 5 X background, which is not severe but also not zero.

I took a 2 hour tour of the savanna as part of a birth party soon after she was launched . It was part of a P.R. Tour to show the same forces that could end the human race ( which at the time seemed likely) made a damn good marine propulsion system as long you didn’t spend too much time near the reactor

Oh? Savanna had a shielding problem? Source?

She really didn't fit any niche in the shipping industry and she was "Very Expensive" to operate. She was a beautiful ship. Shame to lose her.

    No need for radiation protection?

Reactor has been inactive for 50 years. The casket it's enclosed in provides sufficient shielding.

I hope they save the turbines or keep the removed equipment intact so that it can be reinstalled on the ship later

The turbines are ll still aboard the ship. The plan is to turn her into a museum ship, open to the public. The two main problems are that she is still licensed as a nuclear site. That license may be dropped in 2025. The other problem is where to put her. She’s kinda big.
There is one passenger compartment and one crew compartment restored, and the purser’s lounge and the veranda have been restored and look gorgeous.
We are tentatively looking into reactivating the reactor control-panel and have it control a reactor simulator running on a minicomputer. This is a challenge as all the original reactor controls operated using vacuum tubes, so there’s going to be a voltage difference. Also, the instruments connected to the turbines are pneumatic, not electrical.

It’s a shame that they had to pull out the reactor. We’ve destroyed a lot of our nuclear history over a bunch if regulatory technicalities. It probably could have just sat there. It’s not that radioactive anymore.

It's because your sensor reacted to the low radiation released

Or someone accidentally set the white balance to indoor lighting. This is why I prefer cameras with manual controls. If something goes wrong, I can override the automatic setting.

1962 was the year the Supreme Court ordered public school to stop saying a prayer to God. Same year this great ship was put into service. It has been a continuous decline in our nation's moral standards and blessings from God. Oh maybe its just a coincidence. Trust J esus with your soul. Romans 10:9

How long since it ran ? Did they have to cool it down for years before moving it ?

    • @fredblonder7850
      @fredblonder7850  Před rokem +3

It was defueled in 1972. The half-life of the radiation is about five years, so yes, it cooled down a lot and is now only five times background level.
