I hope they go back to live events for WWDC, but take what they learned from doing them remotely. Meeting one on one with the developers and product managers is not the same in a chat room. And many live presentations would be better. Most of the online presentations were just reading a script. I’d almost rather read it myself.

Great podcast. Might want to add an annotation to mention the corrections on the SE watch. It doesn't have temperature sensing. It got crash sensing, but it did not get the new temperature or even blood o2 sensor.
I’m surprised you guys didn’t cover it, but it’s so obvious that this will be Apple’s model going forward. The base iPhones get the An chip and the Pro’s get the An+1. So next year, the base will get the A16, and the Pro’s will get the A17. Going with this strategy, Apple knew they’d have to use the same chip 2 years in a row at some point. I think the overhaul to iOS 16 made this the best year to do it and they knew they’d get the least amount of criticism.

It actually makes prefect sense when you think about it. Not everyone can afford the latest and the greatest chip. And one year older chips are not "that" bad. I mean Samsung and other Android OEMs have been shipping older CPUs in cheaper ranges for years.

A dedicated flashlight button for the watch is so nice, or if I could add a shortcut complication that turns it on with one button instead of having to swipe and then tap. A single click is ideal for sure
Really excited about the 14 Pro Max. The dynamic island feature may seem small or even dumb to some people, but small refinements like this often end up becoming things that i really value. Especially with the multitasking capabilities. Saving me one or two clicks multiple times a day over the next year will really add up. Really looking forward to using it next week when i get the phone.
As someone who is a novice diver, I was blown away at the Watch Ultra features they showed off during the keynote. Most casual divers don’t venture beyond 60 ft deep, so there’s comfort knowing that you’d be more than covered there. Most impressive to me is the “safety stop” tracking when ascending back to the surface. There are some pretty complex algorithms to keep track of the depth and time required for these stops to protect divers from decompression sickness after diving. This is something that a dive computer can help keep track of, but those are typically $300+ and pretty clunky / serve a narrow function. If I lived somewhere where I could dive more frequently, I’d be really tempted to pick one of these up.
As a recreational scuba diver definitely interested to start seeing more reviews on the watch come out from other divers. From my initial impression is it would be good for someone like me that takes 1 or 2 dive trips a year, and goes on 4-10 dives per trip. However, for a professional diver this is definitely missing some of the features someone who dives on a regular basis would want. Personally, I don't think I'd put up this kind of money until they come out with a dive watch rated to ISO 6425. Also, I'm disappointed the app that makes this watch into a dive computer is going to be subscription based. When I put up this kind of money for a dive watch I want it to always work as a dive watch.

It's a total gimmick. People upgrade their smart watches every 2-3 years, dive computers can last you a decade- buying a series 8 and a dedicated dive computer (or renting one when you need it...) makes so much more sense. You'll save a ton of money over upgrading to the latest Ultra watch every 3 years.
@@ScatteredMonolith agree but also the 8 in stainless steel is $800 as well. So for the same price you get the new larger design, flat crystal, titanium case, with more water resistance. Obviously if you just want an Apple Watch and don’t care about design or sapphire , an aluminum Apple Watch is fine, but comparing to the stainless steel, I would get the titanium ultra if I was in the market for one.
I’m posting this since you were wondering how Apple got such a good sounding audio in extreme environments. 1. Of course having really good recording equipment (probably used Dpa microphones I’m guessing) 2. What really makes the audio sound good in those environments is the audio editing. I’ve worked as an audio engineer in with audio like this before and I can explain to you with good confidence how they edited the audio if you wish.
The fall detection on the Apple Watch already sometimes does trigger. I was once on Space Mountain at Disneyworld, and I didn't know emergency services and all of my contacts have been notified until after I got off the ride and they all called me back.

In two years, the chance for there being a body found on a mountain with an Apple Watch Ultra will raise to >1 I already foresee some guy using the watch, forgetting to renew the satellite subscription, getting stuck on a mountain and never coming back.

I smashed the absolute hell out of my Fitbit Sense rock climbing one night and I'm so looking forward to the day they make a smart watch without a curved screen. Also, when the hell are companies going to make durable covers for their watches instead of a bunch of cheap 3rd party companies?
From my experience with ultra runners (my CEO, COO, wife and in laws are ultra runners) all this watch needs to nail are 2 things: First being battery life to last a 100 mile ultra marathon. My CEO averages 26-27 hours for a 100 miler and his current apple watch can't do that so he went to a $1200 Garmin Fenix whatever because it can. That also ties in with the second thing being GPS mileage accuracy. The apple watch mileage tracker is SO bad and inconsistent compared to Garmin or Coros. It'll be off by sometimes up to 5 miles on a long run which is just awful. So if their new double frequency GPS can solve that, and then it also lasts 60 hours I already know a lot of ultra runners we know will get one. We host a 50 mile ultra marathon on the side for fun, and when we posted about the new Apple Watch Ultra, sooo many runners hit us up asking about it or even just flat out saying they're buying one.
I agree that the Apple Watch has a mileage problem, but it doesn’t have a GPS track problem. I think they need to work on their “smoothing” algorithms, the current GPS accuracy is really good in open conditions. Garmin did a lot of work in real world running to get accurate distance measurements.
The dynamic island Is such an apple thing and im so excited for it and having fun reading the haters and them commenting about the always on display 💀 But that dynamic island just has great potential

The Watch Ultra - you get used to size. At a nice dinner, it won't look more out of place than a regular Apple Watch, or any smart watch. I think it looks better than the regular Apple Watch, and it's the first Apple Watch I've ever even considered.
I like the little snippets filmed for the trivia questions/answers this time, but I also just like them being part of the podcast in the usual room itself, so now I'm torn.
Since there is a bit more space, and an AOD is now available, I would've appreciated the ability to see the battery percentage at the side of the logo/indicator.
Dynamic Island? The Reason nobody things about this before is because you alway have to reach the top of the phone to interact with it and also will always mess up your front camera. So, it looks very nice but thats it,😉
It's definitely worth remembering that the prices have increased around the world and not stay too focused on just the US market. Even with inflation, VAT, currency conversion, etc.. the 14pro for £1100 is a bad value
Given that they still don’t even have point to point direction on their regular maps app here across the Middle East and South Asia in my case (Qatar and Pakistan). I doubt satellite emergency services will ever come here.
I’m confused on the adaptive transparency mode thing. My AirPods Pro already do this. When something really loud happens, the microphones dim down a significant amount until the sound stops. Then it recovers about 15 seconds after.
My Series 6 fall detection is pretty cool. Note that the fall detection can be triggered if you are hammering or hit something with force. You have to respond quickly because the watch auto calls EMS or your wife because it assumed that you fell and cannot respond to turn it off. Crash detection should work the same way.
I think crash detection is easier to detect since the watch will know how fast you are going, then sudden high g forces, and intense gyroscopic input from a rollover or your wrist having quick bursts of steering input or basically being ragdolled for 1-5 seconds, plus the mics picking up the sounds of the crash and airbag deployment. Probably far less false positives on the crash one. Nice feature for sure. Both fall and crash detection

As a goalkeeper (soccer), sometimes the watch (series 7) would say I had a hard fall and would like to contact SOS, now with the Ultra, it never does. Yes, I should not be playing with a watch on, but the rings need to be closed.

Doesn’t fall detection only register while workout is active?

I’m confused on the adaptive transparency mode thing. My AirPods Pro already do this. When something really loud happens, the microphones dim down a significant amount until the sound stops. Then it recovers about 15 seconds after.
My guess is that this new “Adaptive Transparency” mode, adds spectral audio dampening to the high-mid frequencies.
I’m getting an ultra and it’s why I’ve held out on a watch lol 😂

My Series 6 fall detection is pretty cool. Note that the fall detection can be triggered if you are hammering or hit something with force. You have to respond quickly because the watch auto calls EMS or your wife because it assumed that you fell and cannot respond to turn it off. Crash detection should work the same way.
I think crash detection is easier to detect since the watch will know how fast you are going, then sudden high g forces, and intense gyroscopic input from a rollover or your wrist having quick bursts of steering input or basically being ragdolled for 1-5 seconds, plus the mics picking up the sounds of the crash and airbag deployment. Probably far less false positives on the crash one. Nice feature for sure. Both fall and crash detection

I don’t think that will happen. Spotify requires you to sign with them meaning they can’t be on any other platforms

The WAN show (Linus Tech Tips) is on both Spotify and CZcams in video format. The VOD shows up on Spotify 3 days after the livestream ends on CZcams
As a goalkeeper (soccer), sometimes the watch (series 7) would say I had a hard fall and would like to contact SOS, now with the Ultra, it never does. Yes, I should not be playing with a watch on, but the rings need to be closed.
