Too cool I really wish they would’ve put something like this out years ago better late than never great video David 🍻
Better late than never :) Cheers Bradley 🍺
Plumbers putty for attaching probes is a great tip, thanks!
Cheers 🍺😎
Great video again! Thanks! This glycol adapted to buckets or unitanks is certainly something to have around!
Thanks David. Yes, it certainly is a welcome new level of flexibility
Fantastic video as always. Definitely on my to buy list. Thank you!
Thank you :)
I'm getting my glycol chiller this Saturday. Thanks for the video!
Great, good timing then :)
Your grainfather glycol chiller video convinced me. I now own 2 of thier fermenter and their brewing system. Thanks again for all the great content!
Cheers 🍺
Great. Thanks for sharing! That adds 10 points to the I’m potentially in trouble list.
Hahaha :)
Another very informative presentation! I was thinking about something like this for my plastic fermenter pails to use them more.
Great, thanks Jon. Sure does add a lot more flexibility.
great video David! thanks por the simplicity and well explanation, still doing research about my BT F150, trying to get a good temperature control for my fermentation. still looking,,,
Cheers 🍻🍻🍻
Thanks for the great video David. I can’t wait to link my GGC up to my eagerly awaited BT F40. I’m quite fond of the GF conical but am looking forward to pressure fermenting. It seems that some of the pack may well be redundant in my case so a shame that you can’t buy just the bits you need! First world problems!!!
Yes for sure Phil. I now have this Brewtools setup up as you saw. Super amazing for sure and this kit manages the cooling nicely.
Based on this video I bought the glycol chiller and a conical yesterday. I like the idea that I´m not locked to Grainfathers equipment if I should choose something else down the road. Let the fermentation begin :)
Great, I am glad you found it to be interesting and useful
@@DavidHeathHomebrew This is something I’ve wanted since I saw your first video on the glycol chiller and such 👍
Ive been very happy with mine, the version you bought is a newer improved model.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Just need floating hydrometers now 😁
Great, not essential but very handy
It's good to see Grainfather giving exiting glycol chiller owners more options with regards to fermentation vessel but let's be honest- not too many people with a glycol chiller are going to be fermenting in a bucket that costs less than the chiller connection kit. Personally I'd like to see the controller available for sale independently. That'd make the glycol chiller much more enticing for unitank owners IMO.
Good points Johnny :)
How do you heat your unitank and combine it to work along with the glycol chiller ?
@@davidpestana5290 I use a slightly modified SS Brewtech controller with home made cables connecting the controller and chiller.
@davidpestana5290 personally I do this seperately but there is a heating pad included.
@sixpots interesting. 🍻🍻🍻
Really good video, liked it a lot 👍
Question: The upgrade kit for the conical fermenter you did for about six months ago, what is your opinion about thetoday
I have replaced the Pogo pin in the old controller and now a year later I have bad connection again.
So I was somehow tempted to perform the upgrade. (Pogo-pin and water do not mix) in fact they were never designed for this purpose, Pogo-pin is for measuring point on PCB in the production line.
Thanks Allan. The upgrade kit is working very nicely. A far better solution than the pogo pins in this application I feel.
Hi David, I'm thinking of trying pressure fermenting and investing in a Brewtools unitank and this may solve my problem of temp control. Would you place the heat pad under the jacket around the conical and would this be sufficient to heat up 40L? This may be a silly idea but it occurred to me that you could use the coil as a super fast immersion chiller also? cheers :)
Hi Paul. You will need this for heating:- czcams.com/video/TL_pXccNUXE/video.html
Hey David! Thanks for all these videos - currently trying to watch as many as I can, since they are all extremely informative :)
So far I'm still brewing on the lowest budget system possible, due to space and money restrictions. At least the space will not be an issue soon though, so I'm currently considering my future homebrew setup.
I'm currently looking at building my own fermentation chamber with an old refrigerator - the setups I've seen seem to perform really well and appear to be a good "bang for the buck" solution. But, from everything I've gathered so far, the conical fermentor with the chiller is the way to go really if you have money to spend. One thing I'm not getting though: What do most people do for temperature control with the secondary fermentation in the bottle?? I've read that you should have the same temperature for secondary fermentation as with the primary one - how would I manage that without a fermentation chamber? Would I still need to build the refrigerator solution, or is the temperature not as important when it comes to bottle conditioning?? Hopefully, you can help me out a little :)
Thank you!
Hi Philipp and many thanks for your appreciation.
The problem with old refrigerator’s is you never know how long they are going to last (especially these days) and the higher running costs. You also find that they can be very limited in terms of multiple vessel support. The GF gylcol chiller can support 4 fermenters and this conversion kit opens further doors, including pressure capable vessels. These pressure vessels like Fermzilla can also be used as unitanks making them suitable for both fermentation and for serving.
This is certainly an easy and effective way to go with no need for bottling.
For secondary fermentation in bottles you will find that leaving them in a normal room at 21C will do the job.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Thanks for the quick reply!! See - that's the issue...We rarely have 21C in our rooms if ever, haha. In the winter we heat to 23C (which I guess would be okay, but not perfect, correct?) and in the summer it has around 27-28C, and sometimes more in a flat in Vienna where I live. No ACs here mean we get the full heat experience :)
I'm guessing everything above 21C and below 16C is a problem for secondary fermentation, right? Or am I misunderstanding that step a little - is the yeast temperature only ever really that important in primary fermentation? No, right? And Lagers would be out of the equation entirely, right?
Those temps are fine for bottle carbonation but not fernentation unless you use kveik yeast.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks David!!
🍻🍻😂
you mention being able to use a heatpad on the fermzilla if you use a suitable material as a buffer - what material do you think could work? A towel? a thin plastic board like a chopping board? cardboard?
Yes but not a heatpad, a heatbelt. I have used a Fermzilla jacket, that worked well. I have not tested anything else.
Would you be able to control this remotely via wifi, or would you need to add something else, like the new Gcast wifi bridge?
It works with the GF community app 🍻🍻
Hi David. Another great video. I would like to use this to heat my fermzilla. You said to use a suitable material cover to protect the plastic from the heat pad. What would you suggest for this purpose ? I don’t want to melt my FV but don’t want to compromise performance either. Thanks in advance.
Thank you.
Neoprene is a commonly used material.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks very much. I thought as much but will the heat pad manage to warm the beer efficiently through that?
Really thorough overview! Looks like they got that accessory right! Wonder what the USD $ will be? Cheers David!! 👍🍻
Thanks Brian. Yes, I think so. I am not sure on US price, probably not fixed yet though with release coming during fall.
I used your Video to hack mine to work with the SS BrewTech Unitank, if only we had this 15 months ago!
Brian's hack was very good for sure but this kit offers a lot more in terms of functionality.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew definitely. Enough that I’ll replace my hack with it when it arrives and the as brewtech ftss
Great. What do you think about the SS Brewtech FTSS?
Hi David thank you for great video review. I was wondering about using this kit with a Ss Chronical 26L Stainless Fermenter - Brewmaster Edition. I realise this fermenter has a cooling coil already built into the side of the fermenter. I am wondering if i can still use this kit and discard the the GF coil. I would prefer not to have the coil in the lid so i can do closed pressure transfers easier. Will the provided GF hoses fit the SS conical coil external fittings and once attached will it all work with the GF adapter kit. I am also wondering how the temp probe would work with the fermenter and where it would fit. I would be interested in your comments and advice. Thanks again!
Cheers Bruce. I would imagine so, is probably all I can realistically say. Its all down to making the hoses fit. Perhaps you can check this in a homebrew store?
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Thanks David I wasn’t sure if it was as easy as just the hose diameter fitting. Good to know. Not near a home brew shop so will see if I can find info online. Thanks again. All your videos have been great to demystify the hobby. 👍🍷
Cheers Bruce 🍻🍻🍻
I didn't understand, sorry.
In Fermzzila you can't put a heater pad?
Thanks.
Excelente vídeo!
Thanks. No, the heater pad cannot touch the plastic. You can add a jacket under though.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew hm the fermzzila jacket?
Or any kind of jacket?
The fermzzila jacket here is expensive.
Thanks for the tip and answer.
Got my fermzzila yesterday, and didn't arrived yet.
It could be the Fermzilla jacket or simply some neoprene around the pad area. The jacket is not expensive though
Are there any new Grainfather updates regarding to a new updated modular G30 in EU. Its been very quiet from AUS down under.
Nothing that I can talk about just yet but stay tuned :)
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Okay, thnx.
🍻🍻🍻
Trying to brew a Belgian golden strong but i don't have much control over temperature. What would you think of combining a belgian yeast with voss kveik? Regards!
Yes, this would work just be sure to choose a Belgian yeast that suits the temperature you have.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Thank you for replying haha. I live in the highlands in Vietnam and it does get quite cool in december, i'll try it then! Cheers.
Cheers 🍻🍻🍻
Hey David, thanks for the video! Do you believe that the glycol chiller could cool down the F150 or even the F300?
Thank you. I have no tested either of these larger units in anyway personally. I have just spoken to Brewtools about your question and they have not tested this set up with either of the larger models at present either. So currently this cannot be confirmed sadly.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew thanks for the reply David!
Cheers 🍺
Im wondering if you could use this with the brewbuilt X2 jacketed.
Yes, I do 🍻🍻🍻
Thanks. I'll need to go do some searching for connector parts then.
Been wanting to get the X2 but didn't want to buy another chiller.
@benthomsen2220 🍻🍻🍻
I am wondering why the heating pad does not work with the F40. The cone is not jacketed so, in theory, should work. Did you try to use it? I am now doing tests with the 500w BT element and unfortunately, it's too powerful so I constantly overshoot by 2C.
Brewtools did not recommend it, so I avoided it.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew Hi, did they say why they didnt recommend it? can it damage the tank?
Hi, im thinking the same thing, that it should work, have you tried it on the F40?
@@jockesjoberg7367 I am using the heating element with a power restriction. The power output I provide to the element is 100w and it looks like I keep it within 0.5c overshoot in a 13C ambient room. At room temp (23c) I need to reduce it further to 60w
Apparently it will not work well.
I thought the glycol chiller could also heat
No, just cooling. 🍻🍻🍻
What's the lowest temperature you can get with this chiller?
Grainfather suggest 4-5C as a minimum.
So, no low temp lagering with this one?
No, though that is not required for traditional lagers of course, just American.
You can override through the controller and go lower. I do regularly, but you do carry a risk of some freezing around the cooling elements
Yes, be careful with this.
I'm not sure why one would want to buy the GC4 if you only have one or two fermenters. The GC2 is priced much lower.
It is, though I guess you never really know what the future brings.
@@DavidHeathHomebrew True enough. For now I would like the future to bring me a conical stainless steel fermenter that is pressure capable. Everyone seems to be out of stock...of everything.
I am sure that will fix itself soon 🍻🍻
Thanks for the great video David. I can’t wait to link my GGC up to my eagerly awaited BT F40. I’m quite fond of the GF conical but am looking forward to pressure fermenting. It seems that some of the pack may well be redundant in my case so a shame that you can’t buy just the bits you need! First world problems!!!
Many thanks Phil. Yes, this certainly adds a nice new level of options for sure :)
