  • Shooting rapid fire exposes a poorly balanced gun through bad hits. What if we could optimize the balance of a handgun so that it has improved stability at speed?

I see people decking out their pistols with crazy Light/Optic combos and you can see in the range videos the weapons jumping all over in different ways that don't look good. I’ve run the gamut on this myself….with the Rival S even. I run a WML for work and thought I’d try it for USPSA for consistency sake. It just didn’t work. If felt like on longer and tighter shots it took longer for the sights/dot to settle sufficiently. Running the LOK G10 grips and a steel guide rod now. Gun comes back on target nice and consistently now.

    Rock the Desert Eagle! Years ago (when it was still legal) a father and son duo brought Desert Eagles to the IPSC Australia nationals. They weren't the most competitive, but they had a ridiculous amount of fun
    Recoil isn't that bad, it's much more of a long heavy push than a nasty snap due to the sheer weight, gas system, long slide travel and duel recoil springs. The main challenge is getting a feel for the handling and how it likes to be held in order to run it fast.

I then gave my Glock 34 that I had in the safe a chance, and have noticed it tracks better. The recoil isn't unmanageable, but the tracking and crispness of the slide feels much better.

    What a timely video, I was thinking about buying the brass grips for my 92G LTT, they make my CZ 75B 41 oz (+9 oz) and it actually recoils nicer than a shadow 2 in terms of tracking. I am not sure what the 5 oz grips would do for the 92G LTT but I am just finding an excuse not to buy a 92 performance, I just love my 92G so much and don't like some things how they configured the 92xp. I don't run a WML either but it seems that they are so far below the pistol that they make it less stable. Think about when you lift weights, the further they are out from the core of your body, the more strength it requires to keep the same stability.

    David, I recently ran a G34, G17 and G19 back to back. Same triggers. All three had minimal felt recoil. The shocking thing for me was the G17 had the worst impulse. It seemed to make the front sight oscillate more. The G34 was better but the clear winner was the G19. It was the easiest to get quick, accurate hits with by a noticeable margin.

      @JA-oo9qp Před měsícem

      @@MrNgMichael Yeah, I like the feel of the G17/34 grip in the hand more, but the G19 definitely performs better for me. No G45 experience, so who knows how much slide vs grip is playing a role in my case.
      The strangest part is the G34 also performed better, so I assume it must have something to do with slide weight/balance making the pistol track easier for me. Splits below .20 are not a problem with any of them but the targets reflect my feelings of the G17 having less predictable/repeatable tracking in my hands.

    You praised the brass grips a lot but preferred the G10 grips + tungsten guide rod in the end. What can be concluded here? That a 50/50 weight balance is a good way to go? Slight front weight bias (tungsten guide rod) is a good thing? But you also mention the Sig moves around less with the brass grips. Sounds like weight balance/performance ratios are different from gun to gun...? Not trying to be overly critical, you're the only guy on YT getting this nerdy and I appreciate your efforts.
    On that note, I really wanted to see any benefits from the LOK brass backstrap I tried on my PDP... but couldn't find any. I found the gun's recoil impulse was even sharper with it (something to be said about polymer's shock absorption?)and having 4 oz. extra weight at the butt of the gun didn't affect much at al as far as tracking, return to zero, etc. Maybe that's not a surprise but some people make it sound like brass backstraps are the second coming of Jesus or something. Anyway, keep up the good work and sharing your observations 👌

    It's good timing that you came out with this video. I've previously been shooting a glock 17 with a surefire x300 at matches. I found that the gun was not good at speed and felt like it strained my wrists. At first, i thought it was the grip angle, but after flattening the hump i had the same issue. After watching some of your videos, you kept mentioning that weight in the grip is important. That's when I realized how front heavy I had made my gun. I started experimenting at the range without the wml and shot a match yesterday without it and came to a couple of conclusions. 1. The strain on my wrists was the leverage that the front heaviness was creating. 2. The gun recoiled more without the wml, but the recoil was much more consistent, and i could settle the gun faster. 3. The gun swung a lot better between targets without the light. The best way i can describe it, is that the wml recoil was unstable as it came back down. It caused the gun to almost bob on the downstroke, which caused shots to go lower and have more side to side deviation.

    I’ve always wanted to run a 50AE in a match. I’ve also thought it would be fun to have a match where everyone shoots hi-points.

    The last time I shot a Desert Eagle 50AE every piece of brass ejected straight into my forehead which explained why the guy that let me shoot it had a wool watch cap pulled down to eye level. I wondered why he was wearing it in the summer. First and last time; they are a handful!

    I Cerakoted a DE .50 at the shop this week and I couldn’t help to think of how awesome/absurd it would be to run one in a match! Very curious on the holster set up and if you’ll run it in single attack/L10 or Open with a dot? 🤔

    Now you should c9mpare what's better , adding weight or shooting heavy bullets . My X5 legion loves 160g bullets and shoots like comped open gun

    What recoil spring are you using with the tungsten guide rod? It looks like a flat spring in the B-roll.

      I'm also interested in this. BSPS advises against the flat springs with W74 guide rods. If there's a brand of spring that work (big enough interior diameter), that would be great info

    I wonder if muzzle brakes/comps made out of tungsten would help since it's place on the very end of the muzzle and it would add more weight
