  • John’s guest is the legendary Jeff Hamilton! In this episode Jeff talks about his early drumming influences, attending Indiana University and studying with the great John Von Ohlen, joining Woody Herman’s band in 1977 at age 23, being invited by Ray Brown to join The L.A. Four in 1978 and relocating to Los Angeles, where Jeff established himself as one of the most versatile and sought after drummers. Jeff shared insights on his ride cymbal beat, brush playing, his approach to achieving his organic drum sound, his equipment and developing the products he uses and endorses. John and Jeff also talked about their history going back over 30 years, with lots of great and funny stories. Please subscribe!

Great discussion and brought back memories. Lessons with Don Lamond as a teenager. My Remo Mastertouch, best snare I ever owned. Seeing Mel Lewis, Buddy and also Woody. Thanks JD for all these great interviews.

Great interview. I grew up w/ an instructor who had me playin along w/ Woody Herman recordings all the time. He was actually supposed to join the band but had an appendicitus attack. Great input from Jeff. A master. Greatest comment I ever received in college from an English professor 40 years ago was that I was the quietest drummer he ever heard. Glyn Johns approach to miking a drum kit is a good start.

    Thanks, John. Informative interview.
Lots of “talkers” don’t know how to listen deeply
or mine the subject matter. You do.

This hour flew by! Thanks so much to both of you. Have had the thrill of seeing Jeff play live a few times. Did a one hour lesson with him years ago that has always stuck with me.
Speaking of sound…great job of processing your warm, soft sound from such an open room.
