  • In June 1886 Mt Tarawera spectacularly erupted, and this documentary tells the story of the people who were caught in the catastrophic events. Around 120 people lost their lives, and the internationally famous Pink and White Terraces were destroyed. The documentary features an animated re-creation of the eruption, archival images, interviews with descendants of those involved, and readings from written eyewitness accounts. The author of the book Tarawera, Ron Keam, is also interviewed.

This is an awesome documentary. I really liked the diary excerpts of the people involved. Their writing is quite poetic and descriptive. I guess this was because writing was the primary form of communication back then. Photography was in it's infancy, no cameras, tv, phones. Amazing insight into life back then.

A few days ago I went to Hot Water beach camp on the side of Lake Tarawera, we had a view of the volcano too. I wish I could of seen the terraces they would’ve been absolutely stunning. What a privilege it would’ve been to live an hour and a half drive and a hike/boat rides to the terraces, the 8th world wonder

My mother’s grandmother Elizabeth Law-Cargill born in Tuamarina in 1876 and as well as other ancestors would have heard or wittiness the explosion and the eruption of Mt Tarawera. The Terraces would have being beautiful back in those days,

Very interesting. But the subtitles are very inaccurate in places, individual words...
