@@AlphaSigmaLigma The grade within which a band plays a piece isn't necessarily an indicator of *personal* skill...perhaps your band is all-around better rounded, better-funded in that every student has better equipment and private lessons to boot. It says nothing about how good the original French horn-playing commenter is. There's so many factors...and there's no way to determine how well the piece was played in relativity. There was a grade 3.5 piece my 7th grade band class played, and I remember feeling this same sense of...superiority, I suppose one could say, when I read the comments on it and saw that most who played it were in 8th grade, some in high school. But the performance was poor. My band did not play the music; we only played the notes on the page. It did not show that we were better, only that we were not ready for what was expected of us. It taught us essential techniques and terms that we would not have encountered otherwise, but in the end, the ultimate goal is a high-quality performance. Perhaps it's different for your band. Perhaps your band is truly performing at a high level, and at a lower grade to boot. But it might be something to consider...if the latter were indeed true, you would only be able to say "we're just better" - not "I'm just better." And it doesn't matter either way, does it? Your skill level in comparison to that of an internet stranger who, more than likely, you'll never cross paths with...Saying that you played it in 6th grade? Cool - it's a great piece, I'm glad your band director is picking high-quality literature! That last part about how it means you're better? "*I* played it in 6th, *I'm* just better." Just drop it...band is truly a team effort. I really wouldn't be saying this if you had used "we" in place of that I. It's good to be proud of your band's accomplishments; even though playing a piece earlier than other bands across the world doesn't automatically show that your band is better, so what? You're happy for your band - that's fantastic. Attributing it all to yourself? That's where everyone starts to think you're just stuck-up, snobbish, and narcissistic. And that's not a good thing for others to think of you...
