" if it sounds good it is good " good lesson.
Play any notes together, if it sounds good it is good, then move your hand and play any notes, and if it sounds good with itself, and with the earlier position, it is good.
Thing is, as you add a second position, the number of notes that will sound good with themselves, and with the prior position seriously diminishes to the point where you're walking through a minefield, and the whole field is mines, with just a few spots that won't blow your legs off, so to speak.
Do I need this video then? Like you've shown two positions that work together nicely, and each of those positions have little modifications that can extend them, which is awesome. But what can I do with this knowledge, that is any different than my (lack of) knowledge before watching this video. Before I was just putting my fingers down, trying to find fingerings that sound good, then trying to randomly find another position that also works with itself and the first position. This way kind of sucks, as you'll spend an eternity trying to find things that work. And then when you do find, omg, two chords that work together... what do you do with it? Without the music theory knowledge, it is very hard to extend that into a full song, it is very hard to figure out a chorus chording that is a progression of the first two chords, but takes the song to a new place. And never mind a finding a good chorus chording, just randomly finding a third chord that even works with the first two, is exponentially harder than finding that second chord that works with the first. Your fingerings/note options progressively diminish... and that is for a one chord chorus. Are you getting me? It sucks to be ignorant.
But what you play here sounds great, if a little hackneyed. Maybe I'll try to write a song with these fingerings?
shouldn’t that be common sense
This is a how to for the whole Around the fur album by Deftones.
It's because The Deftones have a lot of shoegaze roots. That's what always made them stand out from other heavy bands they were associated with.
@@bathoryaria4127 yeah Deftones are underrated
@@bathoryaria4127 eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
The first chord is literally the intro to Korea lmao
Exactly👌
Finally a ‘dissonant guitar sound’ lesson that doesn’t lose itself in talks of modes and unnecessary bullshit. Thank you sir. Well done and well played
Only unnecessary if you don't want to know what you're actually doing and why it sounds that way
@@TheBoglodite yes, fair enough. But theres a lot of players that are looking for tips and a shortcut into playing with these sounds that get intimidated when all the music theory is thrown at them. I've always faired better being able to play around with something first, and then learning the theory behind it so I have a template of understanding to work from. Everyone learns different. Dont be a theory elitist.
@@rrrrrr1669 Ah yes, understanding what you are doing is elitist
@@TheBoglodite ......yeeeeeeeah. alright you're my little freak now.
Ok Big Chungas
5:54 is just so perfect
YES! Veeeeery Shoegaze :)
SG's are so underrated as shoegaze/noise rock guitars.
SGs are so underrated as a guitar
@@yusa4467 True.
Reg smithies one of the guitarists from the chameleons used an SG in the first two LPs and it sounded great
@@theointhebeanie7008 Greg Edwards from Autolux gets a killer Sonic Youth-ish tone from his SG.
The guy from Narrow Head has a sick one
3:22 - 3:24 = gorgeous tone
i hope you make some more shoegaze lesson
dEFTONES - bE QUIET AND dRIVE
Deftones was the first band I thought of when I heard that first chord.
kevinw8305 I agree I thought of Korea for the first chord
@@st33zer23 Korea is a great song, one of my favs by them.
You're by far my favorite guitar teacher on the internet. I appreciate your teaching style, thanks man!
Awesome sounding chords and you have a unique distortion too, I can hear the layers. Very well done!
+Darby Salter It's from the screen door at the side here where I film.
dude... i love your videos... i haven't ever really been excited about video posts....but your music/teaching style is something super ethereal which drives me crazy... in a good way!! Thx keep up the great work.
Completely agree with distancing oneself from theory. You ask me to play a certain chord I might be able to produce 3 or 4. But having taught myself to play I know it's all about finding shapes and patterns that work and finding relevant positions to pop them into. I also never use a top E string. It snapped and I have improvised ever since.
thats it. im buying a guitar. thanks man!
buy a gibson SG
Unadapted I see it's been three years. What'd you buy?
@@ibanezrg320fm he bought a Squier and its been in his closet for the past 5 years
@@johncohle8331
That's unfortunate 😔
@@ibanezrg320fm its never to late to start though
Favorite guitar lessons on CZcams, Thanks!
I love The Pale Saints. The Verve's early stuff is great as videokaseta2 mentioned. The Cocteau Twins are also one of my faves.
Gemini Guitar The Cocteau Twins are one of my top 5 favorite bands. Huge influence on me.
I love the early stuff from The Verve
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless
Ride - Nowhere
Loop - Heaven's End
Love your blackened videos. Great stylings
Yeah, actually looking at doing a feature on stuff like this very soon.
reminds me of that french band CELESTE. super dark and lovely!
Thankyou, that's a great compliment.
Sounds like old Catherine Wheel, love it!
Agree! Chome has this kinda tune
reminds me of alcest, such a great band....and you are a great guitar player (y)
wish i could play like you do :3
Awesome channel, just subbed. Although I am very familiar with a lot of the techniques you teach it is just so refreshing to see someone not playing generic riffs or noodling around with the blues constantly. Dissonance/dischordic and slightly off kilter is how I roll.
this is my favorite guitar lesson on all of youtube :)
thanks for this video!, played the whole day with no results. this made up for it, I have to try tomorrow.
Thanks man, I realy Like this genre.
\m/ another great lesson from the master. Thanks Corey
Cool ideas, man. Thank you!
oh geez! u are good. Im hugh fan of shoegazing and i do look forward to all ur vids!
Love these!
I can listen to you like forever !
If it sounds good it is good, I love that!
Exactly, and I completely agree with that...
that was a great video, thanks
I really like the video keep up the good work 😉👍
3:55 - 4:30
You got a new subscriber only for sayin that, I couldn't agree with you more, dude...
Fookin love it m8!!!
I find major 7th chords to be pretty nice; it's fun to go back and forth between 5th chords. If you're playing any more than 3 strings, it's not as muddled and sounds more melancholic if you play the chords as an arpeggio. It offers a smoother transition as well IMO. It's fun to work on some chords you know and slightly change them (Most of the time, using your pinky does the trick) to get the melody in there as well. Shoegaze uses a lot of fuzz and delay, but I like to use a flanger as well.
thank you sir. It´s amazing!
Sure, I'd like to sound like Deafheaven
whoa, line 6! Great tone coming from that thing. I have a UX2 myself. Cheers!
Awesome lesson , I'll be loading up on your lessons in 2013 for sure!
this is awesome
Wow! that was very inspiring! i've pretty much just started to learn to play and being able to try and do some things in the video showed me that it aint that hard and what fun it can be playing/ practiseing. And what approach and direction i should take in my guitar playing. thank you very much!!! =)
Holy sh, that sounds like deftones
Literally just thinking that.
Great lesson! Reminds of black metal/shoegaze bands like Alcest, Old Silver Key, etc.
Did anyone notice the falling orb around 0.25 into this. Very positive vibes!
I myself use a TonePort UX1, sounds like you'e using the "Classic Distortion" modeled after the ProCo Rat. I love your lessons and you can definitely count me as one of your subscribers/students!
love it!!!
Nice! Really reminds me of Placebo.
Great lesson....
I don't even play guitar, but I found your videos great!
shoegaze
1) my bloody valentine - loveless
2) the jesus and mary chain - psychocandy
blackgaze
1) altar of plagues - white tomb
2) wolves in the throne room - two hunters
a lot of others, but this is a great start
by the way.
listen to loveless as LOUD as POSSIBLE.
Thank you!
Hell yesss!!!
Brilliant.
great vidz !! cheers
Slowdive is great too. More mellow than say My Bloody Valentine.
Be sure to check out Chapterhouse and Ride as well.
love your jeff buckley poster thing in the background
SoySauce HairDye Yeah, it's a tab book. Was kind of obsessed with Jeff's style at one point. : )
love your videos
Corey I thought this was great! i've looked through your other videos as well, any plans on releasing more in this vein?
Metallic Shoegaze? No no, it's SHOEMETAL!
metalgaze
Shoecore
blackgaze
DoomGaze
*Deftones
sounds like sunbather
Sounds like old Catherine Wheel....love it!
This was very stream lined, you got a sub :)
4:10 Oh my god, so true
Exactly what I was thinking.
Could use some shimmery reverb.
Hell yeah!
Amesoeurs are unbelievable!
just subbed! cool channel, aligns with my interests
you might like the verve - she's a superstar or their entire album: storm in heaven, galaxie 500 - album: on fire(strange, isn't it a pity and when will you come home are the best in my opinion) , jesus and mary chain - you trip me up(really good song!), a place to bury strangers - see you again, brian and jonestown massacre - album: bravery, repetition, and noise( leave nothing for Sancho in particular), but there is much more of good shoegaze you should dig :)
Interesting ideas as always, thanks! What amp do you use?
Mate, great tutorial! What distortion pedal were you using in this?
@tomorrowmassacre Sorry, my bad. The tuning is actually one and a half steps slower than standard.
No Joy, heard them man? Love shoe gaze style.
Starflyer 59 and Deerhunter are two that I really like
I love your videos.
How do you get that tone?
@BassOnABudget np
cool it's helping
It would allow the notes to bend more easily, and note bending is an incredibly important element to shoegaze.
Very cool. I think the real key is the right effects and amp; what are you playing through? We spent a lot of time trying get the right sound and always came up short; of course we had limited funds. We did a Fender amps(concert tube and another solid state)along w/ boss overdrive, chorus, and delay. It just always seemed to be not quite right.
I was thinkin the same thing mate.
Lol Deftones guitar lesson
Get some Alcest, it's with a bit of black metal in it, but nothing to much. Really good stuff, and if you like Alcest, you might wanna give Agalloch a shot. Very melodic, beautiful music!
very deftones like. I didn't realize how much they were.
Deftones and Hum alike. Definitely Deftones for sure though.
@@markservilio2357 hum and deftones are amazing bands, hum is definitely shoegaze for sure but deftones have that sound as well, ether way both bands are great, gotta love shoegaze.
GUITAR TIPS AND TRICKS FROM SOMEONE WHO LOVES ALCEST? THAT IS AN AUTOMATIC SUBSCRIBE. (Not trolling. I was considering subscribing already, but that just set it in stone.) I love you.
Your tone is EXCELLENT I’m an SG guy too. Wonder if it’s named for shoegaze haha I wish. I tune baritone w 12s BEADEA
@JMS06723 Yes.
also, if you really enjoy guitar layering like I do, check out real estate. They're shoegaze without distortion, if such a thing is possible.
Some questions... At first.. in shoegaze music I could use ANY chords, that I want, not only the srtings that you're showing here? :)
Do I have to make C5, G5 chords, i mean FIVE-type chords to make it NOT so noisy?
Or it will be even better if i´ll make a lotsof noise with C7, and C9 chords ? ;)
1) So what k i n d of chords should I create for shoegaze music?
2) what kind of effects do you use for this? sounds like distortion+echoe+delay ! ! ! (alltogether)
Where's the Jazzmaster m8!?!? jk haha. Nice techniques :)
What key is this chord progression in? And what scale would you recommend to solo with this chord progression?
@DGYDP Toneport UX-1
also you may like amesoeurs which is blackened shoegaze.
Hey there! Just wondering what kind of gear you're running through to get those great tones. I'm looking to buy a Big Muff or something similar to get my sound to somewhere in between Smashing Pumpkins and Deftones.
Any help is much appreciated!
geminiguitar.com.au/equipment-software-plugins/
I want to get a good Shoegaze tone, I've got a Fender Strat and an Epiphone SG, I've got a BOSS DS-1 (Distortion). If I buy a BOSS DD-7 (Digital Delay) and a BOSS RV-2 (Reverb) will that give me a decent Shoegaze tone?
cause if it sounds good it is good!
I use a Toneport.
What distortion are you using?
is this in standard its great
