  • How to Make a Microscope, Chapter 10
When assembling sensitive parts of the microscopes, assemblers wear suits similar to those in the clean rooms. There are only 1,000 dust particles per cubic foot in the assembly area, where parts that are extremely sensitive to their environment are produced. Critical operations include mechanical setting and centering of individual parts of the optical system with the precision of thousandths of millimeters. To ensure tightness, the devices are then tested in various phases of work by a mass analyzer set to detect helium. If the detector does not discover the presence of helium in the system, FEI knows that the part is perfectly tight, allowing them to move to another phase of production. A specialized team of mechanics assembles the final form of the product from the components and then performs basic activation.
