Putting Two Avocado Seeds into Pots 🌱🌱

  • About half of the refrigerated seeds from last summer have split open and formed roots. Seeds don't germinate at the same pace. Every few days I put a few more into soil, if they look ready.

      Thanks, yeah I hope in a few months to be posting seedling videos, instead of seed videos. 😁

    Hi again from Lincoln Co. NC! After we corresponded 2 months ago (see below) I purchased a bag of 5 unlabeled avocados from which to start some seeds. I scored the skin, half covered them with water and placed them on top of the fridge in the kitchen to stay fairly warm. As I was changing the water this morning I noticed that two of them have sprouted...yeh!

      I had a dozen or more seeds from a year ago that I'd never gotten around to planting. When I was ready to throw out the bags, I noticed one was growing a root - with no watering at all for months! Germinating seeds isn't so difficult, a few more months of patience often results in a sprout.

      @@Avo7bProject I was at the local Ingles supermarket yesterday and picked up two Despry (brand) "Tropical Avocados", which their website claims are a landrace avocado from the Dominican Republic, grown organically, yada, yada. I plan to plant the seeds and see how they do.

    Are these supermarket avocados? My local stores carry Hass and another variety whose name I cannot recall (as I haven't purchased one), but it's twice the size of a Hass and bright green with smooth skin.

      Grocery stores here carry a mishmash of Hass-derived fruits from southern Mexico. These groves are sometimes pollinated by Bacon, or Zutano, so the seeds are a complete gamble. Groceries are also not as discerning about varieties as Avocado nerds... They'll mix Fuerte, Carmen Hass, or Lamb Hass into the display and just call them all Hass...

      @@Avo7bProject Thanks! I was just wondering about the source of your seeds. Are they supermarket-gamble, or curated seeds from known sources? Just curious is all. I lived many years in Central and northern South America and love me some avocados. 👍

      @@stanclayton221 They were just seeds from random grocery stores. I grew out about 30 plants, and kept a few that seemed a little more cold tolerant than the others. But I didn't get anything more cold tolerant than known, grafted varieties.

      Yes, and I was surprised in the end how many of them germinated. Somewhere around half to two-thirds. I didn't really find anything hardier than nursery-grafted plants ... but I do still have a few of these alive after they frosted off completely and re-sprouted.
