    I noticed that almost all the pretty dark skinned girls at my college were with white European men or white American men. I now understand why. In their own communities they get treated like second class citizens. They might as well date someone of a different race because its not like black love is positive or affirming for them,

      How is it bitter to call out black men for not being loyal? Maybe if every other song weren't about red bones and white women, black women wouldn't want to get the hell away from the toxic energy.

      I can tell you're a troll. Lil Wayne, The Weekend, Kodak Black, Donald Glover, are just a few black men who have written about light skinned women / white women or publicly said black women or dark skin women are not beautiful. It happens, its fucked up and black women are sick of it. If black men don't want to respect us then we will open our dating options to everyone not just them.

What I've learned from participating in conversations like this is that the conversation becomes more desirable to watch and/or listen to, when there is someone that plays the role of devil's advocate. I will assure you I do know black women, as I was raised by 4 women and my Grandfather. Please continue to share your thoughts and opinions on the topic and encourage your friends to do the same! My comment was in regards of the false equivalance some black people have in regards to another black person stating they don't like dark skin in a disrespectful way and and try to paint dark skin women in particular as jealous and bitter. Anyone with common sense can see how disingenuous their "preference" is when they broadly paint everyone that fails the paper bag test as masculine, rachet, etc when all of those bad qualities can and do exist in people that aren't dark.

    It's not that men can't have a preference it's just that MOST times when men (especially black men) do name their preference it always comes with excluding another shade in that same thought. Nobody is mad at men having preferences because women have them also but, when you exclude an entire shade/color then it becomes a problem.

    • @bnwo
      @bnwo Před 6 lety +7

      Lol just admit that it's always a problem when black men have preferences. And it's only black men, not white men, not black women, or white women. You are mad when men have preferences and you don't care if women have them to. What you want is to have your preferences while black men are expected to only ever consider dark skin women. That's what you want. Just admit that.

      @flitzenthedeer452 Před 6 lety

      But why should men have to be dark? What about cute light men? Why do women have to be light? And why do they have to be short? Everyone has a different preference that doesn't fit into a "mould", like some like vanilla ice cream (most popular flavor), but not everyone, some like chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, or sorbet. We have diverse tastes, so you shouldn't generalize the entire population as liking only one standard promoted by the media.

    What I found very interesting about this conversation just looking at The visual dynamic is, I don't know if it was edited out or you know just disregarded but not one of those guys got up and let those young ladies take a proper seat. And it's little things like that that showcase the state and differences of how we have been taught from the past into the future. Essentially the fact that a man would not give up his seat to make a woman comfortable during a conversations shows lack of Preparation and general respect. Although I using this as an example. My intention is to highlight 2 things 1. Black woman fights so hard to be acknowledged and appreciated that she has kinda decided to stop asking for respect in those areas that are considered small where we have been conditioned to just let it go. This activity is the reason why we feel so passed over ..because we feel I should not have to tell a man that I need an appropriate place to sit. 2. Because we have allowed ourselves to be conditioned and do not show or demonstrate that for ourselves with small gestures to stand until addressed properly..the cycle continues. People of color both men and woman struggled with colorism and racism daily.. I think the key to change is not forgetting the small things and what our elders taught about respect. and showing at every chance we get. Iron sharpens iron...I know that this topic introduces the topic of up-bringing. But perhaps showing actions like the description given will help. Social media platforms like this help get the conversation started and can help demonstrate positive reinforcement of how our we can take care of each other. Yo Sweat The Small Things ..They matter!😎

      Very good observation. It's like how we treat our community -- no respect or customer service. But how quickly we change our tune when it's a white person. We need to start with respecting ourselves, our men, women and children first. Common courtesy with each other and also giving each other as they say in Jamaica -- a bli, or favors so that we can support our community and help each other get a leg up. We all know it's not way making it as a black person.

      No. We need to be having these conversations because colourism is real. Times are changing for sure, but that is BECAUSE we are talking about it. Colourism has been around since the beginning of time, it transcends culture and geography (largely associated with African culture, but also very present in others eg East Asian and other Asian cultures), it is a sociocultural and historical fact. Growing up as a dark-skinned black woman I went through things mentally that I didn’t understand, and I struggled because there was no one around willing or able to talk about it. Colourism is alive and kicking and if we don’t talk about it, we allow its implicit perpetuation. Unlike general racism, colourism is absolutely something that can be largely addressed WITHIN our community. Why try and silence this conversation?

She'd get dragged by black men for DAYS on end! She'd get called all types of bedwenches and whatnot. He's delusional. Black men get defended by other black men AND often times by some black women when they announce their disdain for darkskin women, but darkskin don't get that same luxury of defense, even when so much as simply explaining their colorism plight.

I also remember hiliary not being so smart but still having advantages lol didn’t she do the weather or some dumb shit she wasn’t even a meteorologist....I mean btwn the Cosby n a different world didn’t play that shit with their characters Whitley had to work just as hard as the rest. I find the perspective of you younger folks very interesting. My granny from Alabama, used to say that when she was growing up in the 1920's, it was far better to be Brown. Light skin meant that either the man could not protect the women in his family from being taken advantage of by White men, or the woman had low morals willing to have sex with White men unwilling to marry them. And too dark made the White folks nervous, like you had just gotten off a slave ship & were unruly and or violent. At the same time, the men in my family were encouraged to marry lighter than them, but still in the race. My granny was really pissed when my dad brought my mom home. She had never SEEN a Puerto Rican, she just knew Maria wasn't Black, but I was raised to be pro Black. Trippy.

Light brown is like actresses queen latifah, taraji p.henson, toni braxton, tyra banks, nikki minaj, then your medium browns are nia long, meagan goode, mary j. Blige, then dark browns are gabrielle union, kelly rowland, amara le negra, then extreme dark like black is lupita, supermodel alek wek, truthfully your light brown is dark red, like amost light skin, so its considered light complexion!!!!!!

    My take on the dude in the middles statement about double standard is that it’s not the same, if a black women says she’s done dating black men I wouldn’t be upset with her because TODAY I don’t blame her like I could see if BM had a good track record (of protecting their women, honoring them, not degrading them, not disrespecting them) then I would be like whaaat sis?!?, but y’all don’t TODAY. So I wouldn’t blame her, which on the other hand black men have that, black women always have the black mans back no matter what. No matter what he does and what he says, so for So many BM to be so comfortable being colorist and degrading black women and hating black women. It’s like what?!? So if a BW does say that I would assume that would be the reason or I wouldn’t blame her because look at BM’s track record of TODAY. That’s just my opinion.

    I grew up in the 80,s and early 90,s. My generation created hip hop. We had so much dark skin representation in the media I was unaffected by colorism. We had shows like “good times, what’s happening, The Jefferson’s, the Cosby show, Steve Harvey show, the fresh prince, Martin, DL hugely, Moesha, The Parker’s, and 227” just to name a few which all had dark skin leading women or representation of dark skin women. Most of the best R&B singers were dark skin and just about all the female rappers were dark skin. So this concept of colorism was never an issue for me. When I look at the best female actress. I’ve lived and worked in 8 states. I’ve been married and engaged more than once. I also think that I am a very average looking dark skin woman with long get black hair. I never felt colorism. In this generation it may be a thing. Black men who dated outside their race back the. Didn’t bash sisters the way this generation does. We lived through the discovery of HIV and the crack error. We still had leaders who supported the Black community when there were injustices. Watching this makes me so grateful that I grew up during a time when you saw dark skin people everyday on TV.

    We need to be having these conversations because colourism is real. Times are changing for sure, but that is BECAUSE we are talking about it. Colourism has been around since the beginning of time, it transcends culture and geography (largely associated with African culture, but also very present in others e.g. East Asian and other Asian cultures), it is a sociocultural and historical fact. As a dark-skinned black woman I mentally went through things, growing up, that I didn’t understand, and I struggled because there was no one around willing or able to talk about it. Colourism is alive and kicking and if we don’t talk about it, we allow its implicit perpetuation. Unlike general racism, colourism is absolutely something that can be largely addressed WITHIN our community. People in these comments that imply that this conversation shouldn't be occurring are trying to silence a very important conversation. What is the point in pretending colourism does not exist?

      The question is: Does he want to marry you? I agree that the guys and girls here made very valid points. I would have liked to see this discussed, however... That is, why do black men of darker hues prefer women who look NOTHING like themselves and vice versa (women of certain hues)... What other race of men around the world [Asian, White (blonde, brunette, and red-haired), and Latino] have the reputation of "preferring" women that look NOTHING LIKE THEM, THEIR MOTHERS, THEIR SISTERS, or (close to) etcetera? I'll wait. Men of darker hues simply need to admit the fact that they are the only group of men (as a collective) in the world (statistically) that prefer women who look NOTHING like the woman who birthed them, assisted them in life. That is in fact how nations (ethnic groups and cultures) are built. By men making their selections based on preference, next making a proposal to the women they have selected, then women following suit and agreeing to said proposal, lastly the two procreating. To change the narrative, we can ask why that is (BM of darker hues not "preferring" women who are their counter image? There is nothing wrong with having a preference. But the broader and more direct question is why black men of darker hues, by in large, initiate the preference for women who look NOTHING like them? I also understand that the universe is an atom of equilibrium so we will see men of lighter hues creating a balance by selecting darker hued women as a result. Sorry such a long rant. I appreciated the content and respectfulness of this video. It was interesting.

The majority of the conversation comes off binary and very focused on the individuals or gender perspective and negative feelings to this system. No conversation of dismantling these terms in this colorist caste system or White supremecy role in creating this structure. These women need to not work where they are constantly being disrespected.

    I like the debate but I’ve never considered myself as a brown skinned, just black. If you consult other races no one is gonna say .... “oh that caramel brown guy 🤨”

    They must be in the deep south cause here in california that light woman would be considered brownskin. That medium tone woman MIGHT be considered dark. Is it the lighting?

      I was thinking the same thing because the light ones seem to be brown skin in my eyes. I can think and find a lot more lighter people to rep the light skinned people in that room. I'm in Calif too

      Not exactly true that they have to be from the south to think like that... I'm from the south and I agree with you that The light women would be brown skinned here and the other might be considered dark. It has nothing to do with the south, my sister in law is from NY and she is brown skinned (to me and everyone else) but she considers her self light skinned even though she is not.

    I just wanted to add to the bit at the end, where one of the members mentioned that if a BW said she prefers only Light Skin men she would not be socially reprimanded by Dark Skin men. I think that has less to do with the fact of colourism and moreso to do with masculinity and pride. It would be 'shameful', not my standards but socially, for that to occur. Just my 2 cents.

    I've watched several of these videos all following around the similar topic of colorism and preference, and what I've found is that lightskinned people especially the women prefer dark skin if not ALWAYS. Just thought that was interesting

    I don't have a preference on color or race I like em all. I had a crush on four dark skin guys , three light skin guys and two white guys. But I dated a light and dark skin guy

    I will admit that I have in certain instances fetishized dark-skinned men, especially after reading the Midnight trilogy (except the 3rd one) by Sister Souljah. Lol. Sorry y'all. But in general, like the one young lady said, fine is fine. If you got it, you just got it. Regardless of shade. But I feel like when it comes to colorism, women get the brunt of the negativity, and more specifically dark-skinned women do. I don't see anyone else receiving the same amount of just pure hatred and disgust as dark-skinned black women. It's truly sickening. But it was so nice not to see that type of bashing in this video. Love the conversation. Even though I'm super late lol.

    If you have to ask that type of question, of course it matters, we might not think so or believe so consciously. Although our rich history plays apart if it.
