  • Learn how to use linking words in English - such as however, instead, therefore, and more - for smooth transitions from one sentence to another.
Linking words - also known as conjunctive adverbs - create a bridge between sentences or ideas.
Without that bridge, there may be an unexpected or abrupt gap between ideas, which can confuse your listeners.
As a result, linking words are a crucial component of fluent and cohesive English communication. They help to connect ideas, show relationships between sentences, and create a logical flow of thought.
In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use linking words to indicate
    - Contrast
    - Comparison
    - Cause and effect
    - Progression or sequence
    - Time

Similar to a computer programming, language can have certain magic power to it beyond the literal meaning. The flow, the way it's spoken, transitions; they all add richness and beauty to it. It takes time and effort to master it, however it provides sense of pleasure and empowerment when accomplished

      Thank you for the question.
Hence is used for cause/effect with the definition of: because of a preceding fact/premise while then is used to show sequence indicating that something occurred or will occur at a later time.

According to Wren and Martin grammar book, verbs of appearing(appear, look, seem, resemble) are stative verbs....
But according to some grammar rules, the word which connects the subject to its complement is a linking verb
    Which rule should we follow?
He looks beautiful..."Look" is a stative verb or a linking verb???
    Please help me...

    • @Speakconfidentenglish
      @Speakconfidentenglish  Před rokem +2

Thank you for the question. Linking vs stative verbs is a challenging topic.
Most linking verbs are also stative verbs. A few things to consider when determining if a verb is linking, stative, or both:
      1. Can you replace the verb with is/are? If yes, the verb is linking.
      2. What is the verb tense? Stative verbs are typically not used in the continuous form.
      3. What follows the verb? Linking verbs are followed by a noun/noun phrase or adjective/adjective phrase. Stative verbs are often follow by objects.
      I hope this helps.

👏👏👏 Thank you for sharing, Lucy. Your first 3 choices work very well.
The last one is a bit tricky. Instead is a word we can use for contrast yet its meaning focuses on replacing one for another. In the example sentence, rather than making a replacement, the focus is 'despite' the need to have more team members shift focus, the manager will keep a small number focused on current projects. The word 'however' would be a better choice here.
