  • Every year we remember these young men who volunteer to fight a war that was not theirs. We take the time each year on ANZAC to read out their names to say thankyou,
Just imagine they had never worn boots or closed shoes, heavy coats and fully clothed as in the islands we live in the tropical weather where its very warm. Our clothing would be just sarongs for ladies and shorts for men. Niue Islanders heard about the war and decided to send some of their men to fight. In 1915 around 150 Niuean men set sail from their Island home for war services. The main difficulty however, was illness, which affected 82 percent of the Niuean men who had to be hospitalized. A small group of 45 men from the Cook Islands also joined forces with the Maori Battalions.
