Couldn’t watch live, this was a great episode. Thank you for all of the great information. I am in the middle of a renovation. Took lath and plaster down, installed 2 new windows. And added insulation in the walls. (1922 farm house in IA) this is the first time these walls have had insulation. Anyways. Got my electrical ran and drywall up. And have started mudding. Thanks to you and your videos I have the courage to attempt this. Hopefully going to be priming and painting soon.

I got the Purdy 18" adjustable frame to paint my newly sided garage. Talk about fast! The adjustment works smoothly & the locks clamp down securely. No problem to clean up either even with dried on paint. The corresponding deep tray plus liners work as expected. Haven't used the frame for smaller rollers but no doubt it'll work great. I highly recommend!

The better your painting tools, the more fun you’ll have. Purdue and Wooster last forever if you care for them. Shampoo releases paint quickly and a well rinsed conditioner then brush your brush with a comb, like new. My wife helps briefly so I give her a nice brush and a handheld. She looks for holidays. An 18” tray and roller, you’ll knock it out fast, inside and on the deck! Make sure she uses peel and stick sheets for samples. Behind each picture on our walls, I found four different colors!!!

That was really excellent. My walls appear to be concrete screed with a skim of plaster ( ie no plasterboard ). Then very badly painted with cheap paint, with no sanding. The paint is dusty. Great to hear that I don't have to PVA it, or wash it. ( I'm renting, but where I live, the regulations are that the tenant has to paint, rather than the landlord. Crazy, I know ! )

  • @marcl2213

Great live that I joined right on time. So true for what you say for ceilings, it’s a pain to paint (thanks for the tip about the acrylic part). And thanks again for answering my question about BMoore flat white. I do mainly empty apartments, between tenants leaving and coming. The owner of the building used to buy Sico, a good paint for a reasonable price. Then the owner got a big reduce price by one BMoore seller and I’m now using that paint. The problem of stiff roller I mentioned only happens with flat white... Your explanation makes sense, it might be added chemicals that makes the paint drying more and more. Like you mentioned a painter can leave rollers and brushes in well sealed plastics. For the flat paint problem I now have to clean the roller(s) at the end of each day. I must say it works pretty good so far but I get the feeling that once the roller is «contaminated» it won’t have a long long life like the other rollers that I have.
P.S. : Let’s pick on BMoore again! 😉They confuse he customer by having 7 different sheens for paint, 7!: Flat, Ulti-Matte, Eggshell, Pearl, Satin, Semi-Gloss, High Gloss.
    Cheers from the canadian maritimes!

Great video, mostly good advice. The 5in1 tool's sharp corner is not for punching holes in a paint can to drip - this is bad advice for paint cans as the paint is too thick and will dry in those holes and produce hard chunks that will fall into the paint and require straining. Learned that first day on the job with a union painter. And talking about paint strainers, those cones are not good for thick water based paints, you'll be waiting a long time for it to drip - use a paint strainer bag instead because you can use your hands to squeeze the paint out. Roller covers - there are good quality woven roller covers, made by Wooster and Purdy, I use the same one all year. You might have given people the idea that ALL woven roller covers are bad and microfiber are superior, microfiber leaves lint too - wool is the best. Overall good video.

Jeff, in all seriousness, those paint strainers are GREAT for straining urine when you’ve been told that you have a kidney stone as well and maybe weren’t given more than one and you accidentally throw it away (nothing like seeing that critter in the strainer, both professional as well as being a patient myself! Love the Wooster products for my retirement painting activities now that I’m enrolled in “CZcams University”. Greetings from DFW.

The reason they do that is because Rona and lowes and dollar tree have the cheap stuff, and they would rather have competitively priced products for people who either don’t want to wash and reuse items or don’t understand the differences in quality.
There’s not a single wall in my house that the 18” roller can’t be used. All of my windows and doors are either on walls with 30” to a corner or so close to a corner that a brush is necessary. 18” roller saved me at least three hours per coat. Didn’t paint horizontally and didn’t run two cages. Highly recommended.

    • @surlycanadian

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY actually no; I’ve got large windows (6’x8.5’, 3.5X3’, and 4.5’x4’)Only the bathroom and the rear entrance have small windows. In my case, things like switch plates and outlets are either way away from obstacles, or they’re bang up against the corner or casing, so even in the cases where the 18” roller is too wide, so is a 9”. It’s possible my house is one in a million for this specific circumstance, you’ve painted probably 1,000 houses more than me (so probably 1,002). so your statement and position on 18” rollers are probably far more often true than not, it was just so jarring to hear that yesterday considering how untrue it is in my setting.
      I absolutely love your stuff.

Landlord here, cheap roller and discard end of job, no cleaning saves so much time (just bag it wet end of day and re-use next).
Wash walls with a floor mop and TSP. Cuts through all the grease/oils, takes less time than priming, no VOCs, paint same day.
Paint with premium paint with more solids (Behr, Benjamin Moore, etc.) Can do just one coat so spend less on paint buying high end!

By the time I switched to 'pro' equipment, cleaning the stuff was the worst part of painting which says a lot. Wooster locking pole and cage were the biggest quality of life improvements. I've put probably over 100 gallons of paint through a single cage. Great system.
Those Handy pails used to have this 'rubber' lip on the front. It was amazing. The 'new' design is just a rounded edge (worse with the liners) making it kinda hard to wipe the brush. I switched back to just using the paint can.
For the 5-1, try and get one like he showed with the plastic handle with the 'flat' bottom. I've used a couple of all metal ones, but the bottom of the handle is too rounded to use to dent-in drywall during primechecks.

  • @tay13666

I will say the cheap roller/cages do have a place. I use those for the same things I use the cheap throw-away brushes for.
A - quick, one-off jobs that I don't want to spend the time cleaning stuff up afterwards. Like painting shelving. Paint, bag everything, do the 2nd coat the next day, then throw everything in the trash once you are done.
B - when I am using oil-based paint. You ever try to wash oil-based paint out of a roller?
It's worth it to buy all new stuff I can throw away afterwards rather than try to clean that roller and cage. I do have good brushes for oils for when I need them. For trim, or polyurethane. But if I am using oils to slap paint on a concrete floor or something, I am using a throw away brush.
