Adventure is such an underrated LP. Could never understand that when it came out. I mean Foxhole alone... Glad you highlighted the Alchemy, another gem, with Lloyd's finest playing.

Thanks for the review. I was super late to the party with Marquee Moon, but it’s one of my favorites. I distinctly remember seeing this record in the collection of an old friend who turned me onto Big Star in 1980. I wish we had listened to this record way back then.

Excellent, and detailed, review. This is what we are here for.
As for MM, I think the improvement potential for this album over the original is slim. Like you suggest, Mazzy, that angularity, edgy sound is this album's hallmark. It doesn't make for a creamy, open-sounding audiophile experience in my view. But it certainly is a stellar album.

Excellent review Mazzy! I saw Matthew Sweet on my bday in college and after many, many shots I recall a friend mentioning that one or more members of Television were in Sweet's backing band that evening (whoever they were, they were amazing (I know one of them played on the single "Girlfriend")). Very much looking forward to this as I have only sampled it a few times in the past...fun to explore something new'ish & especially when its AAA + Kevin Gray!

Sonically, Television had a lot in common with fellow CBGB regulars Talking Heads, circa 1977. I think TV's 1978 follow-up, "Adventure," is underrated, mainly because that first record was so great. (It's that "sophomore slump" thing, maybe.) My original copy still sounds wonderful to me (and I have it on CD, of course, too -- for a cleaner audio experience) but if the Rhino version reveals something new, I'll definitely pick it up. Thanks for the tip.

The Rhino Hi Fi Van Morrison was "His Band and the Street Choir" and it does sound fantastic! I have all 6 so far but I'm not a Jazz fan per se, so since I am not familiar with Television, I think I will pass on both these Jan 12th titles. I am in for Candy-O without a doubt! The 6 Rhino Hi-Fi's I have all sound fabulous so I expect these two will as well. Cheers

Great overview of one of my favorite bands/artists, maybe even convinced me to plunk down cash for another copy in addition to my treasured original. My only addition would be to highly recommend Bryan Waterman 's 33 1/3 book on "Marquee Moon." Waterman does a really great job of painting a picture of the time and place out of which Television sprang. Sadly for them, they spent so much time perfecting that first record that the market moment passed them by so that when it came out they were somewhat "old news" in pop music terms.

Thanks for that Mazzy. Enjoyed that. I had Marquee Moon when it first appeared. A very unique and under-appreciated album. Certainly a record I return to regularly. Also have the follow-up but never really warmed to it in the same way. I'm going to give it another go. I think perhaps it had tough act to follow and maybe I was a little over-critical.

I've got the 2012 Rhino 180g release with Chris Bellman, mastered at RTI and pressed by Optimal. I also noticed that Rhino took the same cut and released a Magenta version in 2015, a Blue Marble in 2018, and finally a clear vinyl in 2022. I feel like Rhino just keeps going back to the well on this one. Will the Kevin Grey cut be that much better and for $40? I'm a bit skeptical.

Television’s self titled third album from 1992 has never been reissued on vinyl (I don’t count the 4MWB one). The OG was only ever released on vinyl in Europe. It gets dismissed as just a Tom Verlaine record disguised as Television and not particularly good, but I think it’s great. Tom seemed not to care or didn’t know how to promote himself and the record didn’t do well. It certainly didn’t sound like a return to form ala Marquee Moon. Nevertheless, it’s a sleeper and highly recommended, especially if you were still a Television fan after Adventure came out.

I think the third album stands up. It's got some fantastic tracks on it - "Call Mr Lee", "1880 or So" and "Rhyme" in particular. I was lucky enough to see them a few times in London after this record came out, a couple of times when Richard Lloyd was still in the band. The extended jams around 1880 were amazing live. RIP Tom V. No doubt now tuning up in heaven...

The new pressing FINALLY arrived last night and I ran both my 2012 pressing and the new Rhino release through my HumminGuru.
Just listened to Side 1 from the 2012 pressing and then the new release. I was expecting them to be pretty similar, and they are when compared to the CD or the original pressing.
But there’s really no contest here.
I never felt it before, but hearing the new pressing I think the 2012 may have been mastered a little bit too hot. And considering I’m running a Rega cart through a Rega phono preamp, I don’t think it’s any chance of a setup issue like a voltage mismatch.
Things I chalked up to the master recordings like some unwanted abrasion and sibilants in the hotter vocals are gone on the new press. It still has the same vibe but it’s an easier listen. A little extra headroom seems to also allow a little more depth and character to the drums.
It’s still a very top-heavy mix, the bass guitar was never intended to have a lot of rumble and the kick drum isn’t micd very well, but this new pressing is much more pleasing than the 2012, even though they are still more similar than they are different.

One of my favorite albums is Warm and Cool, Tom Verlaine's album on Rykodisc in 1992. It's a noirish, reverbby guitar instrumental album that was apparently mostly improvised in the studio. It only came out on vinyl in the UK on Rough Trade, and I happened to score a decent copy from Amoeba's online store for a not too bad price like 10 years ago. This album and his two 2006 albums came out on Thrill Jockey pretty much because Doug McCombs of Tortoise was a huge fan of Warm and Cool. I happened to see Doug and David Daniell on their tour for Sycamore and talked to him a bit before the show and we talked about Warm and Cool. He wasn't aware that there was a vinyl version of it, so he was very interested in tracking a copy down. I hope he did!

I'll consider getting this, but after owning the Bellman cut (which is said to be similar), I have my doubts. MM is a jangly ring of fire, and that's how it's been since day one, and for good reason. Bellman lost me on the opening track, the opening chords of See No Evil just don't have the bite, the edge, and everything is slightly smoothed out. It's not what we got originally, and it's that original version that stays in my head, and is why I fell in love with it.

I was given an advance copy of this album, a few months before it was originally released. It's a classic album, of course. The songs here are concise epics. Tom V is a one off. He doesn't use blues cliches. Tom learnt the sax at first, way back when he was young. People, wrongly, keep harping on about the Grateful Dead, which is, frankly nonsense. People who say that ( Simon Reynolds ) have obviously never heard both groups.Rest In Peace Tom.

Cool. Coolcoolcool. I spent years with various thin and overly bright pressings of Marquee Moon, and finally found one that sounds great. No it’s not an audiophile recording but some of those reissues lack punch, not dissimilar to the problem with some Big Star #1 Record and Radio City pressings. Everyone talks about the guitar interplay on Marquee Moon, which is great but it’s the sound of the drums that “elevates” this album for me. One of my top five rock albums of all time. @Norman Maslov did I hear correctly that you feel this new reissue slightly edges out your white label promo?

I wonder about this Old Waldorf live album...? I'd love to hear more Television music, but I don't think I'd bother picking this one up unless I thought it was going to be a much better recording than The Blow Up. As much as I love Television, I never listen to my copy of The Blow Up, as it's just too rough. What's the verdict on this new Old Waldorf live LP?
Also, Mazzy... Check out more of Tom Verlaine's stuff. I own most of his albums and most of them I really dig. His music I an acquired taste, to be sure (moreso than Television), but if you like Dreamtime, you would probably like lots of his other stuff.
I happen to think that Television reunion album from the 90s sounds more like a Verlaine album than a Television one, and I would say that it doesn't stack up to the best Verlaine stuff, unfortunately.

  • @DadTS13

I have original Sires of the first two Television albums in near mint that I acquired at used record store in Durango, CO circa 1995. Originals of these didn't really make it to Colorado/Midwest much unlike the Talking Heads/Blondie based on my bin browsing.
The press release doesn't say that the new Rhino's are AAA, but as you said ,Mazzy, the punk stuff wasn't really mastered for great sound at the time. Think I will purchase as I'm always up for better bass and drums, which is why I like these records other than Verlaine and Lloyd.

it's good to have someone stand up for the doobie brothers "the captain and me" when there are far "cooler" records to praise in the first weeks of 2024. it's hard to believe that van was relatively "skint" in 1971. i'm glad JL got to see Television...

Saw them open for Peter Gabriel . They were booed so badly they left the stage after a few songs. I’ll never understand why or how an audience can be that rude.

The description of this video should have included the hashtag for paid promotion. The opening minute should have included a graphic saying "paid promotion". You were paid with a free record to do a commercial for Rhino; the last minute featured you telling people to order it now and how to do so.
If you are ever unsure about the definition of a shill, you should re-watch this video. If you want to take payola to pimp a product, so be it, but you should be extremely obvious about it.
Not cool. You embody what the CZcams Vinyl Community has become.

I’ve always had Television Marquee Moon on 12inch 45rpm from when it was released in 1977. It’s stereo on the A side and Mono on the B side. One of those must have records at the time. All the music critics went all in on this particular track! Hearing it again, the bass is so much louder/punchy than the album version imo!

Adventure is very good too. However the record took a long time to come out. They toured the UK at the time and you couldn't get the album. I saw Television three times 77,78 and 93. All those times in the UK - I live here. I lived in West London at the time. Alchemy is a good album. Richards voice is ok, but not great. Tom's voice is not great eirher, but it's conversational, which I like! Thanks for the reviews and insights.

I finally got my Marquee Moon. Who can’t like this? It sounds amazing and I have heard the OG a million times. I agree side 2 seems better sounding than side 1 🫤. Great release. Don’t need the OG. Just get this one while it lasts.
