Was gonna say this if someone else hadn't - I emailed Zippo very worried because mine had no sticker, they explained that the sticker is only about regulations for North America.
I observed exactly that in my zippo colection. All before 2011 says MADE IN ZIPPO USA, and all after says ZIPPO MADE IN USA. They probably changed in 2011
@cutlerylover you should probably clarify that brass can also turn green because in the video, both lighter cases look brassish. brass contains copper so it will also turn green. also, the lighter i have is a pool one with the metal decorations that keeps it from making that click when open and closed. its more of a muffled sound.
My most recent Zippo, a Black Crackle F 12, says "ZIPPO Made in USA" and I know it's genuine because I bought it from a retailer that absolutely could not sell counterfeit Zippos.
@HELLPINAVENGER well dont think that yet looks to me by the comments that the part about the insert may have been wrong, seems that they just changed the design a bit..
Thanks for the video, I can kind of confirm everything you explained are correct because I just took my original Zippo out and compared with your video (even the opening the lid sound sounds the same 😀). Just to let everybody know, I have got a 2009 model (case and inside) and it says "Made in ZIPPO ® U.S.A." which is NOT FAKE! My ® is like his also at the bottom. The new models (somebody here already confirmed, after 2011) writes "ZIPPO made in..." Another thing, it's about the padding/felt and the cotton. You can see the capitalization of the words LIFT TO FILL. The original has these words printed with spaces in between. The fake one he showed in the video didn't show spaces but instead everything is written together like LIFTTOFILL. I am happy I got an original one which I actually bought on China (about 30€? Not quite sure). China doesn't only sell fake ones. Another area you can check if your Zippo is real, the box that came with it. Just check its quality build and the printing of the logo and the eight dots. Inside the box look for the certificate. I am Chinese but I would recognize if the spelling is a disaster or not. Instruction should always be in English or if you are in another country and have another localization, at least there is always an English version included. Peace out!
i have noticed on a good majority of the counterfeit zippos i have purchased that a pinkie nail dragged over the logo on the bottom of the lighter you will always have crisp lines on a real zippo on a good majority of counterfeit (80%+) the edged of the lettering on the bottom are rounded over and smooth
What some people don't realize is that there will be slight inconsistencies even in genuine stuff like this.. Examples will be vintage american fender stratocasters. Sometimes even a month apart in production means a slight change in wiring or even headstock logo shapes on transition models. Just because two items don't match exactly doesn't mean one is fake, in this case especially considering the two items are 3 years apart.
This guy needs to learn more about Zippos before he posts his videos! Every zippo I have has came from either my local zippo dealer or Zippos website and the inserts and the fonts hardly ever match! The sound, they all sound a little different and as for the markings on the case, I have many of BOTH - Made in ZIPPO USA and ZIPPO Made in USA
kindly upload one zippo that says Made in Zippo USA and is ordered from zippo website itself. you been tricked into fakes and you just dont want to accept that. talking about inserts, they will be 2-4 months plus or minus the date on the case.
If I had to tell the difference between the sounds, I'd say the fakes usually make a "shing" sound, and the real makes a "shing" sound. That's how I distinguish between the two.
I wanted to share a bit of information, that the orange seals are not always included for Zippo marketed outside the USA unless there are sellers who import directly from USA to supply markets outside the USA. That's because I live in Indonesia and here there is no official Zippo distributor such as Japan or European countries like London. Sellers in Indonesia usually imported from Asian distributors, Europe, or the USA. And indeed only Zippo from USA which has orange seal.
the vintage replica come with brass inserts too i want a 1962 era insert for my 1962 zippo. how can i tell if im buying the right year. and of course a authentic one thanks
Not sure what you were looking at but having both lighters in frame was working fine. Much better than trying to compare 2 things without having them next to each other.
the warning on my lighter and the thing where it says use zippo wicks... its turned sideways but its a really old zippo with rome numbers so is it fake?
Hey Jeff one thing if you could check, on my counterfeits the spot weld on the hinge are sloppy and the one is off set not centered. Just curious if your weld is close to vintage?
@45Blackjack your zippo was made in 85, before numbers they used symbols slash marks and straight marks even dots...before that patents numbrs gave a general date
Honestly I'd just spend the extra few bucks and get the real thing for the life-time warranty. Just ordered my girl a custom one for her birthday, can't wait to get it :)
I have this old zippo style lighter marked "Moss Invincible" on the bottom. Also marked Japan. Its similar to a slim style zippo. How do i find replacement parts for this thing?
Maybe someone could help me...I purchased two 2011 Zippos from Amazon.com a few weeks ago and two things strike me as odd: 1) neither came with the orange sticker affixed to the reverse of the casing, and 2) the insert on both says, 'ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A.' rather than 'MADE IN ZIPPO U.S.A.' like all my others do. I know that the absence of the sticker is not necessarilly an indication that I have a counterfeit, but if anyone else has a 2011 insert I would like to know what it says. Thanks!
@sportssox10 I have one that dates to 1994 and it too is printed from cam to wheel. I could be wrong, but I think that the chimney to bottom printing started in 2002. As for the inside color, my older Zippos tend to have slightly darker hued internals which may mean that the older ones are a bit tarnished or that Zippo was using brass with a different amount of zinc in older models.
@cutlerylover glad your back i wanted to ask your opinion on an antique zippo i recently bought, its a genuine zippo but the markings on the bottom say: G (july) and XII (12) im confuesed if you want ill send you pics just reply
when comparing inserts , notice the flint wheel holder (part with rivet thru it) on genuine it is tear shaped , on fake it is semi circle (like a 1930's insert !)
@Z.A. Adams; As Walmart is an authorized Zippo dealer, most likely it is a genuine Zippo. Since the mark "I" stands for "September" and the mark "11" stands for 2011, Zippo manufactured that insert in Septermper of 2011.
My zippo, a $10 from Wal-mart ($15 from meijer) one, has a "k" as the month and the inside of the case is also turning green from tarnish. What does this mean?
@cutlerylover the guitar face one is only one month older than the zippo i carry i swear ive learned more from you in the last week about zippos than i learned in a lifetime from family members who carry zippos like yesterday i went to my grandfathers (hes been an active zippo user for 40 years was showing my (I) 08 zippo to him and i watched him light his cig, and then i seen it a 70's zippo with the old scroll type lettering and i wouldnt have know that if it wasnt for you so thank you
So Jeff - I have a 2014 Zippo pipe lighter (black with pipe logo) and the insert has the wording that looks like your fake insert - does Zippo move the Zippo word around in the stamping from year to year. I'll look at my other pipe inserts of various years here tonight. All other attributes of the insert seem to look good (shape of cam, stamping of retention detent, rivets, etc). The dates also match between the case and insert. The spot welds (3) on the insert look good also. It's been interesting watching videos on (good) fake Zippos. Mine came new with all warning stickers, box and paperwork. Fun trying to spot the copies...
My "Zippo" caries the the 1981 "/" marking on the left side, however the wording is Zippo (Rights reserved R thing) next line Bradford, PA. Does not say "Made in USA"? Also the insert markings are written vertically, not horizontally. Is it real, or fake?
hey Jeff, im looking into buying my first zippo soon and am wondering what i should get :P under 25 is my budget. what type of finish do you think is best?
I picked up a satin finish Zippo off of wannalight on eBay for $7 (and $2 for shipping, but it was free to the US) a while ago. I think it was a sale, but it was still really surprising to me.
Hello Jeff! I had a little question on the sticker-thing. You see I bought two zippos both at a tobacconists and they did'nt come with a sticker on it. are they couterfeit?
The exact nature of the ping sound when opening the lid doesn't mean much. I have two chrome-plated Zippos from the 1990s (one polished and one brushed) which both sound the same when opening the lid, but I also have a silver-plated Zippo that I bought from R.J. Reynolds with "Camel Cash" in the 1990s, which has a significantly lower frequency ping sound, which I like better. So I assume the coating and/or plating material can affect the sound.
i have a chrome libra zippo, had it for years, it was a birthday gift. but on the bottom the R restistered trademark symbol in not top right of the zipp"O", it's next to the bottom of the O. should i worry that it's fake? it didn't come with a sticker, but in an original zippo box.
@zanderwow Thanks! One of my friends who works in a smoke shop said that they sometimes take the stickers off to show people the inserts. Maybe that's why mine is missing. Oh well...
so if mine says L and instead of the year it says XI as in roman numerals..what does that mean..by the way the lighter was purchased in 1997..all other markings are correct..came in the official box as well with the zippo manual that comes with it
Hey Yeah that Video is from 2011 but I have one Question I have two variants of inside writing: A: Made in ZIPPO USA B: ZIPPO Made in USA I´m pretty sure all of my lighters are original but what is about that different variants? Any explination about that?
@cutlerylover hey, I have a small knife collection, but I want something I can collect easier and cheaper, would zippo's be good for me to get into? I like them personally, but I'm a teenager and I don't want to be looked at like someone that smokes
btw you can get zippo for less than 5 bucks cause my aunt works on the finishing line in bradford PA and she gets the five finger discount all the time
I looked on amazon for a black ice zippo and they are selling for 15 dollars normally 25. it says the seller is zippo and there is a picture with the sticker on it. is this still fake because of the price?
just a side note ive got around 5 genuine zippo. I know there genie cause sound, importing, brass wheel. In UK and other places the information shown is in the instruction manual. No sticker :)
I've bought three in Britain, all of which I'm pretty certain are genuine, but they lacked the sticker. Could it be a legal requirement in the US to have the stickers perhaps?
Same case, I've bought a lot of original Zippos in Mexico and none of them had stickers, they had the boxes and the lifetime warranty... The stickers might be only for US, I think...
I went to a vintage shop and bought a all black zippo for 7 dollars and it wasnt working (could work with gas and flint) but I noticed it had the initials P.A.K. on it and it looked as if it was spray painted black. It has a zippo logo over the black paint that is fading and has brass showing through the paint. The hinge is really firm and tough to open. And the inside features no instructions on the metal. The screw for flint is way smaller and the cotton and cotton cover are very thick. The bottom has the zippo logo but the paint I believe has covered every piece of important info. Overall a really weird lighter I now own. Don't know if its real tbh.
Just tried to move a new lighter into case and it does not fit. Might be a clue as to if its real or fake.. (as in not fit I mean goes in but will now close right)
No offense, but your "minute" details mean nothing. Zippo made in USA is accurate. As is Made in Zippo USA. The sound is not identical on all Zippo. Sometimes the wick is visible. I have no idea if your Zippo is fake, but nothing you've shown here is evidence of a fake Zippo. All you did was needlessly and incorrectly worry people into wondering if their Zippo is fake based on your faulty information and lack of knowledge when it comes to Zippos.
Additionally, you don't always find the orange sticker on Zippos purchased from other countries. Based on your lack of any real evidence, your Zippos is genuine. If it's not, actual proof is required. Unfortunately, you've shown none. Until you have some, the verdict remains "not fake".
Absolutely correct. Zippo's Sold in South Africa very seldom have the sticker. Case in Point: My new Venetian (chrome) came in a genuine box, was placed on special-order though the licensed distributor, and has the "ZIPPO made in USA" (the supposedly "fake" one). My girlfriend also purchased a Zippo WITHOUT a red sticker, ALSO has the "fake" writing on the inner. The Author is also reminded that Zippo themselves, have authoritatively said in one of their videos that they make minor changes to things on the Zippo over the course of time to be able to spot the fakes. They know which ones, and it a closely guarded secret.
@no9scrum Yes, it's a 2011... i bought from a dealer on ebay that sells alot of zippos. it came with the sticker seal and a real zippo box... for 10bucks i cant complain thoe... thank man
Hello, I have what I think is a real Zippo, It was purchased in 2002 and came in what appeared to be genuine packaging. It has a 5 barrel hinge, steel rivits, 16 holes in the chiminey and a brass eyelet at the flint. I can see from wear that the body is brass, clad in an "antique silver" finish. the bottom is marked "A" Zippo 02" "Bradford PA Made in USA" What is makeing me wonder is that the bottom of the body is flat, not canned. Did they make flat bottomed Zippos in 2002?
i have a day of the dead zippo i bought from a corner store earlier this year, in a zippo display case and came with a box and guarantee and everything. the insert says zippo made in usa, and the case actually looks copper, im not sure though, it has a new type of coating thats like that smooth paint. the bottom stamping is exact. it sounds real as hell. i may post a video response to this video to show you
yo jeff, thanks for the vid. btw, I just stared at my zippo for a few minutes & noticed the one I got at walmart says on the insert: ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A. it's marked C 14 (march 2014) on both the case & insert, but would this be considered "fake"? I only own 2 zippos, so I can't really do a comparison of my own. Thanks!!
I have two '03 zippos, both from Walmart. Those say "Made in Zippo U.S.A." A 2014 I just got recently, also at walmart, says "Zippo Made in U.S.A." I assume they changed it recently. They've a few things over the years, including the font used for the logo.
@@CanItAlready and also at the same time they changed the font..., for example the trademark R on the "for the best results use ZIPPO" is not located in the same place a before, located in between the I and D below
So what does it mean if the letter like the "J" for example is a "G" like mine. "G Zippo 11" I baught it at walmart and it came with a Zippo box and the orange sticker.
I've bought 6 zippos and only one came with the sticker, are you sure they're meant to all come with stickers? I've bought 4 from Amazon and a couple from a local shop and one of them from Amazon had the sticker. I even bought the 80th anniversary zippo and it didn't have the sticker D:
Hey you might have said it in the video and i missed it, but what if instead of a two digit year on the bottom, I have roman numerals? everything else checks out but this. I know it is a 1996.
I have an Armor Zippo that has an insert that says "Zippo, Made in USA" like the fake insert. It came in a real Zippo box, that had the correct P/N and description for the Armor Zippo. Zippo and insert are both date marked "J 11".
I have a Zippo I just received from DX.COM, SKU 19474. It is a Zippo model 31690, 200 REG BRUSH FIN CHROME and it seems genuine according to the differences for fakes shown in your video. Incidentally, I could not lift the bottom pad without inserting a small screwdriver between it and the case as it was recessed below the level of the case. Is this normal for a genuine Zippo? I saw that you used your fingers. I am concerned however that it does have a very wobbly hinge. Is this normal for a new Zippo? In addition, it did not come with the case sticker you mention but it did come with a box with warranty and instructions.
A Zippo hinge is a Zippo hinge no matter where you buy the Zippo. Even though your comment is 6 years old, it's still the dumbest comment on this video.
haha oh my super cool zippo was made in january. i thought it meant it was "A" class and the best quality of zippo or something lol. how much is a blue mirror chrome finish A 04 worth lately?
hey jeff, i was looking at one of my zippos's and i was just wondering if all of the inserts have the dented part to keep it from flying out, i think this zippo is a legit zippo but it does not have that dent . thanks, -mrminecrafttable
Have you actually sent it to Zippo to get it checked? I have a few of these and I have had one fixed by Zippo for free so that means it was a real one. I am sure they would soon let you know if it was a fake.
In Europe they actually don't come with the red Sticker
Was gonna say this if someone else hadn't - I emailed Zippo very worried because mine had no sticker, they explained that the sticker is only about regulations for North America.
@@kaitlyn__L because in Europe the people aren't extreme with suing like they are in the America's.
THANK YOU FOR THIS COMMENT
Same in Australia
A zippo with a black matte finish, and one with a highly polished silver finish will never sound the same
Starting in 2011 I believe Zippo started to use " ZIPPO MADE IN USA" instead of "MADE IN ZIPPO USA".
I observed exactly that in my zippo colection. All before 2011 says MADE IN ZIPPO USA, and all after says ZIPPO MADE IN USA.
They probably changed in 2011
I believed mine is fake because of this.
ohh thank you, i was freaked out thinking mine was a fake bcuz of that
Correct! i have a C 08 zippo insert and it says made in zippo usa i also have a brushed chrome zippo from G 12 and it says zippo made in u.s.a
l
My Genuine Zippo says "ZIPPO® MADE IN U.S.A."
As does mine
Same here!!!
Koriko me too
My older genuines say made in Zippo USA. Some older ones actually can say that.
My zippo is original and say made in zippo USA

I have a Zippo and a Zorro. Zippo's flame is different from Zorro's. I am not sure how to describe it.
Zippo changed the writing on the inserts from: made in zippo usa to: zippo made in usa in 2011
James Randal My manufacturing date is written as K 14, is it a fake...?
+Song Ji Hyo nope, i also thought my zippo was fake until i checked and found that since 2011 they say Zippo made in usa
Thanks dude i just got mine super cheap and its from 2010. It says made in zippo USA so i assumed it to be fake, i guess not!
realy usefull! I could tell right away if my Zippo was a mock, just from the tells you demonstrate, thanks!

Hey Jeff, did the counterfeit Zippo have two little circular rivets above the hinge on the side of the case? There should be one above and one below.
Hey Jeff one thing if you could check, on my counterfeits the spot weld on the hinge are sloppy and the one is off set not centered. Just curious if your weld is close to vintage?

Yes my zippo from 1989 also has the "r" under the "o" but i had it checked in a couple of pawn shops and all told me it's genuine model.
Honestly I'd just spend the extra few bucks and get the real thing for the life-time warranty. Just ordered my girl a custom one for her birthday, can't wait to get it :)
I have a jack daniel's zippo but it doen't ping, it is because there's a thick plastic design glued on it?
I have this old zippo style lighter marked "Moss Invincible" on the bottom. Also marked Japan. Its similar to a slim style zippo. How do i find replacement parts for this thing?

The genuine zippos have the corners of the cams notched out. Your fake didn't. Also you didn't check to see if the wheel had cross hatching.
Hey Yeah that Video is from 2011 but I have one Question
I have two variants of inside writing:
A: Made in ZIPPO USA
B: ZIPPO Made in USA
I´m pretty sure all of my lighters are original but what is about that different variants? Any explination about that?
@cutlerylover hey, I have a small knife collection, but I want something I can collect easier and cheaper, would zippo's be good for me to get into? I like them personally, but I'm a teenager and I don't want to be looked at like someone that smokes

@cutlerylover I'm thinking of buying 1 of Amazon, would that be safe enough? Sorry if I ask too much just want some advice.
I can see the difference in the metals, the brass is goldy yellow while the copper is a more tarnished color.
actually what i found out is that upto 2010 models it says "Made in ZIPPO usa"
but after 2010 [2011-2013] models it says "ZIPPO Made in usa"
I looked on amazon for a black ice zippo and they are selling for 15 dollars normally 25. it says the seller is zippo and there is a picture with the sticker on it. is this still fake because of the price?
do you have any idea where i can find a zippo made from mild steel? the ones made during the vietnam war, i want one so damn bad
What if mine has an "L" for the month letter? I got mine at Walmart.
just a side note ive got around 5 genuine zippo. I know there genie cause sound, importing, brass wheel. In UK and other places the information shown is in the instruction manual. No sticker :)
the size of the chimney holes look like they're different sizes too.
I recon if u get them from those shops with zippo cabinets they are real, all the ones in England I baught haven't had it
Harry Eaton in Sweden u get the sticker
The orange, "No sad onions" sticker is important for the survival of freedom.
I went to a vintage shop and bought a all black zippo for 7 dollars and it wasnt working (could work with gas and flint)
but I noticed it had the initials
P.A.K. on it and it looked as if
it was spray painted black.
It has a zippo logo over the black paint that is fading and
has brass showing through the paint.
(as in not fit I mean goes in but will now close right)
Is the pin on the backside of the wheel wider than the real zippo?
There are lots of small things, the J, the tinsil, the wick being exposed. These are all just things that i have never come across on ANY zippos.
Neill Powell u can see It on the flint wheel.
Zippos are made in the USA , so the ones you saw very well gould be fake just fyi
The trade mark on my 2002 zippo is at the bottom right of the O. What do you think guys. Tnx.
i have a day of the dead zippo i bought from a corner store earlier this year, in a zippo display case and came with a box and guarantee and everything. the insert says zippo made in usa, and the case actually looks copper, im not sure though, it has a new type of coating thats like that smooth paint. the bottom stamping is exact. it sounds real as hell. i may post a video response to this video to show you
yo jeff, thanks for the vid. btw, I just stared at my zippo for a few minutes & noticed the one I got at walmart says on the insert: ZIPPO MADE IN U.S.A.
it's marked C 14 (march 2014) on both the case & insert, but would this be considered "fake"? I only own 2 zippos, so I can't really do a comparison of my own. Thanks!!
So does mine :/
I have two '03 zippos, both from Walmart. Those say "Made in Zippo U.S.A." A 2014 I just got recently, also at walmart, says "Zippo Made in U.S.A." I assume they changed it recently. They've a few things over the years, including the font used for the logo.
@@CanItAlready and also at the same time they changed the font..., for example the trademark R on the "for the best results use ZIPPO" is not located in the same place a before, located in between the I and D below
it means it was made in may. Each letter corresponds to a month. A is January B is February and so on.
hey good video! whats the flash light your using? :)
somone please help so my zippo where it has the month letter stamp says H obviously there is no month H does this mean it is fake
@TheCardGuy521 desp[itr this video counterfeihts are rare...most zippos are real, dont worry about it
I have a question for Zippo Master Jeff. Black Ice is a canned bottom except for the 1941reprica, right?
So what does it mean if the letter like the "J" for example is a "G" like mine. "G Zippo 11" I baught it at walmart and it came with a Zippo box and the orange sticker.
I have the exact same one, did you find the insert really hard to get out? Also mine came with a fake box too
I've bought 6 zippos and only one came with the sticker, are you sure they're meant to all come with stickers? I've bought 4 from Amazon and a couple from a local shop and one of them from Amazon had the sticker. I even bought the 80th anniversary zippo and it didn't have the sticker D:
Hey you might have said it in the video and i missed it, but what if instead of a two digit year on the bottom, I have roman numerals? everything else checks out but this. I know it is a 1996.
I have an Armor Zippo that has an insert that says "Zippo, Made in USA" like the fake insert. It came in a real Zippo box, that had the correct P/N and description for the Armor Zippo. Zippo and insert are both date marked "J 11".
your zippo is real
They are both original. A high polished zippo sounds never the same as a brushed finish. Each Zippo is unique.
Things I never knew, thanks for the education. I'll know how to look for a real Zippo now.
New ones always have that problem, but the sticker is a concern. It could be real, but it may be a shipping mistake
I too have DX's "genuine Zippo" where everything else matches except the sticker, wobly hinge and somewhat crude spot weldings.
Zippos That are sold in other places apart from usa don't always have the sticker
is the sick diferent if im not wrong fake has a strait sting loking wick but the real deal is like Much wider am i wrong or right
Beware of the cheap Walmart Zippos. The hinges wear out on them within months.
both mine are still going strong and from 2012
Dilan Gilluly a $10 chrome zippo at Wal-Mart is the same as a $20 chrome zippo at walgreens...
A Zippo hinge is a Zippo hinge no matter where you buy the Zippo. Even though your comment is 6 years old, it's still the dumbest comment on this video.
You can buy lots of good condition zippos at antique shops for under $6 most of the ones I buy I only get at those shops becuase they make them cheap
I have this insert (my only zippo haha(first also)) the insert has ZIPPO before made in USA does it mean its fake?
mine is with zippo first. But has the licence and this is in Australia and its brass with the zippo click.
@Racngixer1 i dont think so mate is it a 2011 one?
all my 2011 ones have ZIPPO MADE IN USA stamped on the insert
i wonder what would happen if you sent it in for repair?
haha oh my super cool zippo was made in january. i thought it meant it was "A" class and the best quality of zippo or something lol.
how much is a blue mirror chrome finish A 04 worth lately?
hey jeff,
i was looking at one of my zippos's and i was just wondering if all of the inserts have the dented part to keep it from flying out, i think this zippo is a legit zippo but it does not have that dent .
thanks,
-mrminecrafttable
Have you actually sent it to Zippo to get it checked? I have a few of these and I have had one fixed by Zippo for free so that means it was a real one. I am sure they would soon let you know if it was a fake.
@LoverOfGeometry availability most likely
@sportssox10 Great! I'm glad to hear someone found the same inscription.
My zippo insert and casing are made in the same month and year (K,11). It also says "ZIPPO Made in U.S.A."
Is this a counterfiet?
@Zach84932 no, but they're the only ones supposed to put zippo on their merchandise.
@medoloverr ebay but only use a dealer that sells nothing but zippos...
I did have one genuine zippo, a 1937 replica that came with the wick like that,
Yo Jeff. I'm gonna buy a Zippo pretty soon. Anyway I can detect if its real? And any zippos you would recommend for a newbie
"Good Lord. *pulls out knife*" lol my reaction as well.
I bought my zippo for 35 euros, in a normal box but without sticker, is he fake?
