- It's time to limber up, stretch those art muscles, and set aside regular time to draw LOOSE. Plus, we're talkin' toes, flights, and junk drawers. If you're just learning how to draw, or a working creative professional, it's time to dump the crayons. Yeah, a lot of this doesn't make sense unless you've watched the video.
I'm trying my hand at some semi-animated segments in this one, let me know what you think!

I'm trying something new, with the semi-animated story toward the beginning. Would you guys like to see more stuff like that?
Only if you wanna! They were a nice touch to the video, but you don't need to if you find them a hassle for later videos.
Sure, personal stories are a simple ways to help you make your point.
I like them, they add a little personality to the videos.
It looks pretty good, I would love to see more
I like it, if they don't take away too much time I would certainly like to see more of them.
Everytime you mention your mentor, I think of a young Brookes climbing a mountain to a small shack with a wise old drawing artist inside.
😂 I tend to think of the swamps of Dagobah personally
In the end, cowards are those who do not draw.
Was the wacky silhouette of Yoshi busy committing tax fraud?

😂😂thats amazing
Gotta say, this is I believe the first video of yours where you've shared an idea that, I really haven't thought about as an artist myself. Taking a sketchbook and just going all out for the sake of drawing for fun. I remember when I was a kid, I would draw a lot more and every so often while drawing I would think of a new technique or idea that could make a drawing look better. But it was always a 50/50, there was also a chance it would turn out poorly. But I did it anyway, and would add this new idea to my art and even times when they didn't turn out well it was a fun learning experience for me to grow as an artist.
That's awesome man, I'm glad! You've gotta have that fun!
I know the sketchbook thing was an example, but my mom got me a sketchbook recently as a gift and its so nice that I don't wanna draw anything bad looking in it.
I totally understand what he's talking about; I've spent a lot of my drawing time on my webcomic, and feel like my art has stagnated a bit. I'm trying to do just what he said and draw for myself more often.
I'm loving this new format! The animated stories are a nice touch
Thanks Drew!
Thank you kindly!
Drawing loose, without focusing as much as I usually do helps so much! It made drawing fun again.
Thats awesome!
It’s been my issue for years, I’m 20 now, I got my first big sketchbook in high school (I’ve been drawing on printer paper for years before then) and all I did was make a new full illustration on every page. I don’t sketch and as a result it takes me like 4 hours to make a refined sketch I’m proud of to make into a full illustration. I can’t doodle so I need a creative junk drawer. I need a place to not care and just get my ideas down. A place to fail faster and it not matter, a place to broaden my ideas and finally get them down on paper. Maybe one day I can make a finished illustration in an hour that I’m proud of rather the the 11 hours it takes now if I just keep practicing.
I'm really glad you're finally getting more attention and viewers. Your videos are SO helpful and thoughtfull that people do themselves a loss if they don't know you exist in the world. Thanks for reminding me to be more loose with my work! :)
I really appreciate that, thank you so much! It really helps when folks share my vids around, it's frustrating during the weeks where vids don't get much traction. Makes it that much more worth it when they do resonate, though! All the best with your art! 💪
I have two friends that I shared your content with as they're also artists so definitely! And thank you as well, I shall do my best and once I get better finances, I'll try to visit you on Patreon to see what I could improve on. :D
Pampd I agree
This kid is my best friend. Eat your heart out CZcams!
NEW CZcams WHO DIS??
5:26 DOODLE PAGES! YEEEEESSS! Honestly, they are (one of) the best things in the world.
I actually think that I do that way too often, and not enough well thought/complete drawings
In class I love to make random shapes and see what I can turn them into. I just doodled a dash hound with this method and it’s really cute.
I'm very much an open book, so even some of my art mistakes and other "bleh" moments/"junk drawer drawings" get posted onto my accounts, haha! This is a fantastic reminder to let go and enjoy the passion that got us into art in the first place. :D
From a CZcams video specialist: your intros and outros have improved VASTLY the past couple videos I've seen from you. Keep up the great work!
I have a little sketch book that I take with me when I got to camps and the like. I never do good drawings in it in case I lose it, I have some really neat sketches and ideas in it because I'm not afraid of it looking bad. I guess never thought about it that way but It's really helped me improve
Definitely! That's really good practice
Intro had me laughing! thanks for another great vid man!
Having a four year old who wants you to regularly drop a literal box of cayons onto computer paper and draw with him helps, too.
wow... as someone who has been stuck essentially drawing the same thing for YEARS, this really genuinely helped me. thank you :)
I've been stuck in a rut with my art for a while, so this was super encouraging. Thank you!!
"This has been an art video somehow" I laughed the whole drive home 😂😂😂😂😂🤣💀👻
Hahah congrats on the toe touches
I appreciate your humorous personality!
I appreciate you making this video so much
Your body will stretch and feel pain but if you do keep doing that you get used to it that’s how stretching actually works 😂
I just discovered your videos and your very great!!! Lately I've been feeling that my art is in a rut and I'm too pressured with wanting to people to like my art and appreciate but I forgot that I should be draw what I want and truly love. I listen to your videos while drawing, keep up the great work!!
I visit this video periodically. Love it! Valuable information. Thank you
Heck yeah! Throughout my entire artistic "career" one of my favorite exercises has been to make up new monsters/creatures with this mentality. Literally just... making shapes fit together with no premeditation or end game. It's something I don't do nearly as often as when I was younger, but it's super refreshing, and I never feel disappointed when I'm done because there's no expectations.
And I'm enjoying the allegorical intros! :^)
Your videos really help me with drawing and developing my characters, and I don't know what to say after that so yeah, thank you
I actually like this advice and gonna give it a go. It's been a while since I drew crazy things without feeling judged about it. Thanks man =D
Because i get bored quite easily, my comfort zone is not having any comfort zones
My problem is actually concentrating on art studies
I actually just started trying some new stuff with my art and this video confirms that it was a good idea!! Thank you Brookes!
...ya' know? It's been a long time since I've drawn something where I give not a care to what I make, towards (quite literally) the whole point of art: Expression.
Any time I do try to put care into my work, it's just with pieces that are almost pathetically easy to draw, and the stuff that I wanna make that goes beyond that, I worry too much about sucking to ultimately end up drawing.
Maybe I should do that again. Maybe I should make that piece for the sake of making it, and not presenting it. Maybe then I can work with those serious pieces I wanna make.
DO. IT!
Thanks for the tips, man!
I've been a subscriber for some time now, and I find your videos very helpful, for one who want to improve his art skills. Keep up the good work! :)
Cheers!
Very glad, thanks Drango!
needed this!
4:54 great idea 👍🏼
Always love your videos!
Your advice is great and helps me with my art so much!
Congrats with touching your toes!
Your videos are so insightful and really inspire me to write and draw better I just wanted to thank you!
I don't know how exactly to put this into words, but you just lit a spark in my mind. I've been very ridgid with drawing, and now it feels a bit stagnated and tiresome. I honstly feel motivated, and now I wanna draw some weird things. Thank you.
I like his humour 😁
Great advice and input as always- you are a smart dude.
Good video. You sounded like a life coach. 😆 You are right though, I keep some of my crazy, loose doodles and when I look at them later I find them to be hilarious.
This is legitimately great advice, thank you for making this. My friend goes to art school but I get by on your videos xD
I think this perfectly describes a thing I've been facing recently, but couldn't quite put to words. Thanks for the insight!
Is it just me, or is there some kind of dream-like wavery visual effect on the semi-animated part starting at 1:02? I had a bit of a headache while watching that part, and I can't tell if one was causing the other, or if one was just exacerbating the other.
Other than that, I loved that toon section! ^_^ Getting to see a little illustration to go with what you were talking about was great!
Very helpful and inspiring video!
This thumbnail was cool.
Oh it's really time to loose it up.
You are totally and completely eloquenteruditeous!! Also, so not genetic :p
NO BLAME WAS LEVIED 😆
"You need a creative junk drawer"
I kept drawing at the end of my school notebooks even after my mother bought a sketchbook, because she would always show the sketchbook to my granfather everytime i visited him. My grandfather also drew lines showing the floor in my drawings one day, which was completely unnecessary, and i went back and erased it without looking back. It's just that modern art is different than old art, and i don't know how to explain that to him
My entire life is a junk drawer.
4:52 killed me xD you're so suddenly really funny
I do this mostly on my phone for infinite pages and ink
How do you stay consistent on it though?
Really helpful video! I love your channel, and I’m thinking of becoming a $5 tier patron. Is there still the option to have your critique be uploaded as a public video?
Thanks so much! The critiques being posted publicly (as an option, by no means required) is absolutely still a thing- This coming weekend you’ll actually be seeing a lot more of the critiques!
Brookes Eggleston - Character Design Forge great, thanks for replying. And if you can only be a patron for 1-2 months will you still receive the critique?
What was that technique you were doing at czcams.com/video/KRP9gttmHXI/video.htmlm42s ? I've been trying to break into color and lighting more and it looked interesting. Does it have a specific name I can look up?
Oh boy, I've got a lot farther to go...
Touched your toes standing up _for the first time in your life,_ huh?
I can comfortably rest my knuckles on the floor in front of my feet (gorilla-style) without bending my knees. If I unfold my fists, I can actually step on my own fingers. I can _almost press my entire palm_ flat on the floor, but then I start feeling it in the back of my legs.
I thought the idea that not everybody could bend far enough to touch their feet was a myth. =^/ I've never really thought about it either. It's not like I've ever asked anybody, "hey, can you do this?" and if it's true that some people _can't,_ then they'd probably think I was showing off if I did. =^(
Also, I love the "dramatic re-enactment" X^D
Broo, what books do you read?
The Chris Oatley Academy podcast (if you haven't heard of it, go check it out. One of the most amazing and well kept secret art communities on the internet) just recently posted a new episode about techniques to help artists flip failure around. It really helped lift my spirits and try out positive self improvement mindsets. Love you and your videos, Brookes! You're awesome!

Speaking of text in the thumbnail, your channel's name is quite long. I like the wordless thumbnail a lot, but I was wondering if you'll be changing up your channel's name to something shorter.
nope, no plans to
