Am I the only who finds Del Monaco a rather crude singer? I mean impressive, it's obviously a massive voice and he is technically able to do everything he needs to, but there's not much nuance in the musicianship. Aside from the peerless technique, Callas is colouring every word here, miraculous. Del Monaco sounds rather blunt next to her!

I agree with you, MDM ...... a great voice, that one can not not admire, ..... but poor singing technique and, sometimes, even coarse

Yes, he was always big-voiced, powerful early on. Exciting, no doubt. However, a very dry timbre, little color, no shading or tinting, none of that, just big singing. By 1960, he was less powerful, off-key every now and then, and a bit loud. By the early 60's very loud, flat quite a bit and by 1965, he just bellowed and hollered.

Possibly the greatest Aida ever recorded. IMO, Del Monaco's perfect diction constant column of breath, impetus phasing, interpretation and solid vocals, including B-flats towers over any other tenor in the third act of Aida. My dream would be to have Corelli sing the Celeste Aida and Del Monaco sing the rest of the opera. He was also better live.

Two greatest opera actors and two possibly greatest opera singers in their prime? This must have been insane in person, the electricity must have been super high at these performances. Who else can squeeze so much drama and passion out of music with such full powerful expressive voice. A masterpiece. Greatness personified.

What I love about this scene is how solid, beautiful and vocally healthy Callas’ pianissimos sound! And of course that duet became a competition of who has more volume and who is able to hold the high notes longer!

Mario Del Monaco 1957 interview in English, Hartford 31January 1957. Del Monaco is asked at around 5.25. '' Is Callas a great singer"? There are 2 different things with Tebaldi & Callas. Tebaldi has a beautiful voice today, but Callas is something special, I never heard a singer like her before. I like very much Callas too." Is Callas inspirational to sing with? MDM, ''Yes, I sing very well with Callas. Tebaldi is a fine voice today, but not dramatic like Callas. Excuse me but I don't speak English very well.

@@LohengrinO Del Monaco played the violin, the piano, spoke German, sang in French and German, Spoke some English, was a Sculptor, a studio artist, and George Jellinek said MDM had a trick soprano voice. When the day comes when MDM could no longer sing as a tenor, perhaps he could sing as a soprano with a different timber of voice with an extension up to E-Flat. If this is retardation, I'm in.
