  • This week we're back on Major Charles' Army base for the first time in a year!!
    But instead of trying Korean Army Rations - the British soldiers are going to be trying some legit Korean food - "Army base stew", otherwise called Budaejjigae!!
    Thank you to major Charles Bodell-Lee and the soldiers from 57 (Bhurtpore) Battery of 47 Regiment Royal Artillery for making this video possible.
    Huge thanks to everyone involved in the creation of this video:

    When I was stationed at Ft Campbell, one of the Senior NCOs wives made home made kemchi that was served in the mess hall about once a month. For most of the soldiers it was their first taste of east Asian cooking. I had already eaten several east Asian foods when I lived in Perth, before I joined the US Army and went to West Germany for 2 years. There is a line from an old "Schoolhouse Rock" that goes "Don't knock it till you've tried it, eating can be fun." and I've tried to live by that maxim by eating local foods in all the places I've lived, or visited, over the last 40 years.

    ChrIst and Charles are funny. ❤ Talking about the American army foods, during the Vietnam War, a Thai chef created American Fried Rice from ingredients from the US base in Thailand. It is made of ketchup, rice, cubed carrots, sweet peas, ham, sausages, fried chicken, and topped with a fried egg. The American Fried Rice only exists in Thailand. No beans, Spam ,or any American cheese though. I guess it is too hot and humid in Thailand for those ingredients. 😅

    • @karateman302
      @karateman302 Před rokem +2

      I don't think it's the heat, actually. Spam is popular in the Philippines because of the US presence and it's pretty hot and humid there. If I had to guess, it'd have to do with the fact that the bases gave out a lot of food in Korea after the war when the country was recovering and a lot of spam got handed out

    • @Annkeo
      @Annkeo Před rokem +2

    • @karateman302

      @@Annkeo That's probably not much of a factor to be honest. The bases were probably supplied with food from the US like they were in Korea because it would be less risky. Relying on goods sourced locally around the base would make them vulnerable to food shortages in the area. Even if the base is in friendly territory, it would still be a pretty big vulnerability that someone else might try to exploit.

    I'm American but I do love Korean food. I've been trying to learn the food culture and cooking habits for a couple of years. I just love the flavors and cooking styles honestly.
    One thing I can say is this really is good food. It really is absolutely random yet delicious. Its honestly a good way to make a filling meal that feels unique when you mostly only have scraps lying around. It's versatile and you can easy swap one thing for another. I personally don't enjoy using sweet beans for this. I prefer a simple canned or soaked bean and not something with a lot of sauce. I've tried different types of sausages and hot dogs, I've added fish cake and fish balls used in hot pots with fillings like roe, I've added veggies like cabbage, spinach, carrots, garlic. I've tried using different mushrooms, using water and the standard spice mix and adding in the ramen soup or anchovy stock. I've added I'm a can of salmon, or eggs, or spam. It's so versatile and so delicious. Like a comfort food
