  • The kidney filters the blood. And in this video, I show how the blood gets to the kidneys, through the kidneys, and away from the kidneys.
    The pathway we explore starts with the Abdominal aorta, then to the renal artery, segmental artery, interlobar artery, arcuate artery, interlobular artery, and to the arcuate artery, to the glomerulus, efferent artery, and to the peritubular capillaries.
    From there, it goes via the interlobular vein, to the arcuate vein, to the interlobar vein to the renal veins, and ultimately via the Inferior vena cava to the heart.
    Time Stamps:
    00:00 Intro
    00:19 Blood flow from the heart
    00:56 Renal artery
    01:40 Segmental artery
    01:54 Interlobar artery
    02:09 Arcurate artery
    02:26 Interlobular artery
    02:46 Afferent arterioles
    03:11 Glomerulus
    03:25 Efferent arterioles and Peritubular capillaries
    04:24 Review of the arteries
    05:08 The veins

    Why do some textbooks skip the segmental veins when detailing the blood returning to the heart?

    • @InteractiveBiology
      @InteractiveBiology  Před 4 měsíci

      Good question. I think it just depends on the textbook. The higher level it goes, the more they get into things like segmental veins. Anyways, glad you got value from it. What about the blood which goes down to supply the lower limb, it didn't enter the kidney in the renal artery, how will it get filtered then? it goes down and comes back to the heart as vein

    • @InteractiveBiology
      @InteractiveBiology  Před 8 měsíci +1

      That's a great question. Here's the thing. ALL blood gets circulated through the kidneys eventually. The blood that goes to the lower limb doesn't go to the kidney on its first pass. However, it goes back to the heart, then to the lungs, then back to the heart, then out to the body. At that point it goes to the kidneys and then gets filtered. It's a beautiful thing.

      Thanks for the feedback. This video basically covers the vessels going to, through, and out of the kidneys. In future videos, I plan on going more into the distinctions and review. I recommend watching those as they come, and then revisiting this video after to see if it makes more sense then.

    Sir I have a doubt 🙂 that the blood flowing through renal artery is oxygenated or deoxygenated? And it contain nitrogenous wastes, right??

    • @InteractiveBiology
      @InteractiveBiology  Před 2 lety

      Well, think about it. Look at the color that's normally used to show the renal artery. Is it red or blue? And what do those colors mean?
      Also, part of the role of the kidney is to filter out urea to go in the urine. Urea contains a lot of nitrogen as it's our way of getting rid of nitrogen. So do you think the blood coming through the renal artery contains nitrogenous wastes?
      I know - I answered your questions with more questions, but that's mostly because they seem like homework questions and rather than just giving you the answer, I think you'd get it better if you thought through the process 😉.
      So - what are your answers?

    • @lavanya3281
      @lavanya3281 Před 2 lety

      @@InteractiveBiology Arteries are red, and..it means they carry O2. Well I think renal ones must be doing the same then. And I'm confused about nitrogenous wastes, but since the blood they carry gets purified in the glomerulus, then they must contain waste products🤔

    I think it's more accurate to say the kidneys "regulate" the blood, rather than "filter".

    • @InteractiveBiology
      @InteractiveBiology  Před 9 měsíci +1

      But the Kidneys do literally filter the blood. In the glomerulus, the blood flows through the capillaries and the walls of the capillaries act as a filter that lets some things through and others not. That's filtration. The kidneys do also regulate the blood in multiple ways, one of which is through the release of specific hormones. So it's not either or. It's yes, and 😉
