  • We have a special guest this week - custom wooden boat builder, Paul Rollins, who joins us to talk about the boat he built back in 2009 - a Bud McIntosh-designed gaff-rigged cutter Sailboat for sale. It's 30' long (11.9m) found in Yarmouth, Maine. It's a neat little version of a bigger McIntosh-style Schooner that the owner had sailed for years. Captain Q imagines it would be a perfect coastal cruising boat for some grandparents and a crew of youngsters to go out for the weekend.

I love your channel. Living in Kansas, I'm about as land locked as anyone could be. I've never been sailing. Ever. There weren't even any lakes near where I grew up. But now in my mid 50's I've taken an interest in sailing purely as a intellectual diversion from the daily grind and your videos bring me joy every week. Some day I hope my wife will let me buy a small lake sailing boat. Until then I'm learning what I can.

I was hoping to learn to sail by reading books from the library. The book that spoke to me most was one written by a French sailor and translated to English. The first thing he said was, he couldn't teach someone to sail by reading his book. He said, get on a boat and try to sail and then come back for answers to your questions. I bought a 21' San Juan from 120 miles from home. I took it 60 miles from home to a fishing lake in April for my first time on a sailboat. If I had any questions they were few. I believe I learned to sail in a past life and it all came back to me.

I spent 25 years on the West Coast, USA, Mexican Border to the Canadian Border, out to 200 nautical miles (fuel limit), in a boat built in 1912. She brought me home safe and sound when other, more modern boats sank, with all hands lost. Inch and a half Douglas Fir planks on two inch frames 12 inches apart. Remember, wood floats!

Lovely ship! If only I was a foot shorter! Wood has its own advantages over other building materials. It really likes salt water. As long as you keep the rainwater out, keep it floating in cooler climates you can maintain her for ever. Replacing planking is possible without ruining the interior, like welding will do on a steel boat. With a steel boat it is harder to find a place to work. Welding and grinding is not allowed in most places in the Netherlands. Most of all the amount character in a wooden boat just can't be beaten. Oh, and if you happen to be young, the skills this boat wit teach you will keep you at work with good pay for life!

that is my presumption so don't take it to the bank but i can see no other reason off hand unless she was originally designed to have an engine when she was built . The engine was added as an after thought

Nice boat. Those off center props take some getting used to. The "walk". Wooden boats are whole different ballgame. I recently put am offer on an old lyman, refused. I thanked God.

I had bronze belaying pins on a Kenner Privateer Ketch, very nice for organizing lines and halyards. I felt like Johnny Depp ..... =D

Yep, they matched the patina of the bronze winches and deck cleats. The Privateer was a real charmer !!

I’m saprised she’s winterin’ on the hahd, rather than in the watah with a covah. She’d be fah moah comfy in the drink and theyah’d be no seam shrinkage or potential dry rot from fresh watah seepage into the bilge. Fine looking vessel though, if I was 10: yeahs youngah, I’d most cehtainly step up. Hope she finds a good home.

Thank you. Wonderful show. I am a bit afraid of this boat as it takes a person who has time and luck to care for her. She is a wonderful yacht that is tight down below in the sacrifice of elegant lines. She does need a crew to sail but cast her off and do some champagne sailing.

BTW i think you were talking about mousing 6.50 when you meant seizing wire. The former is a "Dummy" wire or string that you use to pull through the required wire the latter is wire being used to secure cotter pins etc

Had no idea Riddle of the Sands had been made into a movie. Great book. Now I know what I will watch tonight!
