The lanterns that is not be used any more now are symbolic of the revival of life after sunset, as was the custom, before the invention of modern lighting systems during the twentieth century, it still maintains that symbolism of the children happiness, and this is something clear and known and has nothing to do with any devotional or belief aspect associated with fasting.

There is a suggestion when you are giving answers to the questions on Islam like questions on Shia and Sunni, giving examples from Quran or Islamic history and not comparing them with Christianity protestant and Catholic or versions of bible.
