I do a lot of scissors from both communities. Sam from Kenchi is correct. Size is the only real difference. You have people in both areas that use cheap scissors and expensive ones. I have done a few convex scissors that were 10 inch. The sharpening was easy when they are that long but the finishing is a pain in the butt.

Even size doesn't always count. I have stylists who use 8 inch shears and some groomers use short ones on the face and feet.

Another thing that makes a difference in the use and design of the different shears is that humans typically only have 1 hair per follicle, dogs have up to 20 something hairs per follicle. It’s how groomers know when folks have been grooming their pet at home. It’s that polished finished look from grooming shears..

From a shear manufactures point of view, there is no real difference in the way the shears are made. The ones grooming their shears at home probably used sewing scissors.

Yes. They are really the same. Both vary in quality and lengths. It just that grooming shears are MORE LIKELY to be longer and lower quality.

Every time I heard human cutting shears I kept imagining the shears and scissors surgeons use in the operating room.

Those tools are much softer steel.

@@BonikaShears I didn't know that. I am guessing it is so no metal chips off.

Exactly the same stuff as far as I can see steel quality etc only difference is length due to a long body you can cut down it and get more done in one cut. a human head is round, why would you want to haul around a 10 inch shear with 1 to 6 inches cutting at any one time. To simplify it cutting hair around a volleyball vs a log of wood. Pretty simple stuff. A convex, semi convex and bevel are all the same for pet or human. They can flog off about steel type and rockwell all they like fact is shear steel tech is decades behind and there are more shears on the market at 56ish claiming 60+ than there actually are. Anyone who hand sharpens knows the difference as soon as they make a single pass. The industry itself is a huge rort with what things are actually worth to what they charge. Same goes for the knife industry. Also nothing gets close to steel technology compared to pocket knives, everything else is decades behind claiming to be top end.

So true. However, I do see 10" shears used at some of the Atlanta barber shops. I think as the larger afros come back in style we will see even more of the longer shears for barbers.

If you are just making money from sharpening I agree. If you sell shears I think the salons make you more money but that's just been my experience. It may be because I don't like sharpening clipper blades!
