Popeye probably flipped out when he saw commercials like this, wanted to eat ten cans of spinach and go after the CEO who he thought was working for Bluto undercover!!
Although the chain is named after James "Popeye" Doyle from _"The French Connection"_ movies, the company was using the E. C. Segar cartoon characters under license back when this particular commercial came out... Even some of the fried chicken meal sizes were named after each character in accordance to size, with _"Sweet Pea"_ the smallest, to _"Wimpy"_ (naturally) being the largest...
See! This is how you do character promotions! You hear that Sonic!? It's as obvious as the day is long that you need to do Sonic the Hedgehog tie-ins! I mean, you sell CHILI DOGS and onion RINGS. THIS SHIT WROTE ITSELF ALREADY!!!
You know, I really wish they make Popeye the Sailorman and Bluto the Skipper the main commercial mascots for Popeye's Cajun Chicken, it can even show the two characters trying to convince people to try and like Popeyes great cajun food that they serve, while having to deal with eachother's problems, you know what I mean, & what do you think, would that be a good idea?
Yea. My cousin lived in Louisiana and whenever she flew to San Diego, she'd get big bags of popeyes before her flight and we'd chow down.It was a few hours old, but still bomb as hell. Back when you could bring outside food on your flight. And then whenever we'd go there, that's all I'd eat.
69 cents in those days wasn’t as cheap as today. Avg salary was like 12k a year and inflation was thru the roof. It would be like $2.50 for a soda in today’s money!
Here in the Buffalo area, I know of two Popeye's locations... Elmwood Avenue in North Buffalo, just before the Kenmore village line(WIVB-TV, Channel 4, is just across the street). Niagara Falls Boulevard in Niagara Falls, corner of Military Road, just about a half- mile south of the Prime Outlets.
I'm confused. Maybe somebody can help me out. On the commercial they got Popeye the sailor man I thought they named the restaurant after the character because his face is on font back then and I found out they named the place after Gean Hackman's character Popeye Doyle from the French Connection. Why is it?
Because,, even though he DID get the idea from Popeye Doyles Character , to name it Popeyes,,,a year or so after he reached enormous success ,,,, King features Syndicate , the Hearst family company that OWNS the RIGHTS to the name Popeyes, came a calling and , Al Copeland,, the master at negotiation,,, hammered out a deal with them , to pay for the rights to use the name and the Characters of the strip,,, for a 1 percent Royalty,, thus ,,, THE COMIC strip and Characters were Licsensed and used exclusively afterwards and it was a WIN/ WIN for both.... Al Copeland is my kin and I grew up with his kids ,, I knew him BEFORE he became the LEGEND and ICON that he is now!~A TRUE visionary,, and WINNER!~
@montrosepatriot i remember getting this little coin that was good for a free something or other from popeye's chicken in the 80s but being a kid i kept it cause it looked like a gold coin. i still have it. anyway there was a picture of popeye on it and his head was in a star. interesting to know though
WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POPEYE'S CHICKEN AND POPEYE THE SAILOR MAN COMBINED!!! i wish I could've seen that BEFORE IT was no longer allowed 3-4 Years ago from 12/26/2016
my grandma freaks out when I tell her how much it costs for a her shy bar at the store. has anyone noticed that candy now a days is smaller or thinner than it was before. stupid half centimeter hershey bar.
We're still better than most metropolitan areas though. Loose liquor laws, bars aplenty, sports galore, and food to die for. Regardless of whatever arguements others may care to make, there are no more than 15-20 other spots in the nation that could be more fun than NOLA.
Actually, Popeye's Chicken is NOT named after the sailor man. It's named after the character of Popeye Doyle from the movie, the French Connection. Somehow, I don't think a cop or a sailor can effectively sell fried chicken.
@thebitchulovtohate Popeyes used to be the schiznit back in the '70s, 80s and 90s until street gangs raided the place and started having brawls. It's totally targeted to the African-American community now.
Popeye probably flipped out when he saw commercials like this, wanted to eat ten cans of spinach and go after the CEO who he thought was working for Bluto undercover!!
This was around the time we first starting eating at Popeyes. Remember these commercials very well :)
How did Popeyes taste in the 70's 😊
funny that they don't use the characters from the cartoon/strip anymore
How sad

Lmao, "Brutus Glass thru Sunday." I guess they weren't too excited about selling the villain from Popeye. Probably didn't think people would want it.
back when Popeyes used Popeye the Sailorman's likeness. weird how Popeyes and Popeye the sailor is two different things
Oh hell nah wow they had popeyes in '79

Lord of Axes metal guitar 🎸 #JustMonika

Awesome!
Haha, the name of the fast food is like the name of Paramount's cartoon character which is cool! :D

Taken from WWL-TV’s Popeye & Pals
Ah, the good old days when resturants still had menu items under $1
We had the Swee'Pea glass for years til it disappeared during a move.
2009
cool
Wow didn't know that there was a popeye's chicken back then in 79
Before they'd lost their namesake mascot.
You'd be surprised how many people eat/love POPEYES Chicken and don't know about Popeye the Sailor Man!
Cool
I wish I could find the Popeyes commercial with Franco Harris.
69-cent soft drink. Today that would be $5
A . 69¢ Soft Drink ?? Wowww
@DavidB05
Back then, 69 cents back then was probably like the equivalent of about 5 bucks today...

That looks like Bayn Johnson ["Kelly" from The Electric Company from 1973 to 1975] if I'm not mistaken!!
wow the glasses that you would see at your local flee market
69 cent soft drinks? I wish we had a Popeyes in my hometown in 1979!
His name is Bluto.
So that's how Brutus The Barber Beefcake got his ring name!
Ironically, the name Popeyes was based on Popeye Doyle from The French Connection.
I knew was popeye the sailor was always part of the restaurant chain like ronald and Burger King
She pronounces it with the same weird emphasis as Ben Carson! Pop _Eye_

poppy chicken is the shiznit loool
Popeye's is still the best.. wish they'd do a buttermilk recipe though. Buttermilk chicken is awesome.
79 looks different from 82 Any 1972 Popeye's ads?

I like Popeye! Olive Oyl! Sweet Pea! And Wimpy!
I'm ordering crispy chicken strip!
And then ordering popcorn chicken too!

I hate it when the manager couldn't pay the mortgage. Our Popeye's are gone! It looks more like a ghost corner!
Actually, Popeye's Chicken is NOT named after the sailor man. It's named after the character of Popeye Doyle from the movie, the French Connection. Somehow, I don't think a cop or a sailor can effectively sell fried chicken.
Join a sailor for lunch when they pull in. Good food is just as essential as alcohol in a port.
@hanksnow82 Obviously you have never been to Louisiana, EVERYONE loves Popeyes.
Popeyes had onion rings???????
69 cents!!!! sheeit....
PoP Peyes?
@myrosey99 everything nowadays is smaller and more expensive less bang for the buck

Unless you were stereotyping :\
Loved the onion rings.... And the price of a .69 soda.....
