    Is the Apple Studio Display worth the hefty price tag of $1599? When Apple last released a non-pro display it was the Thunderbolt Display for $999. In this video I'll outline my experience using the VESA mount Studio Display managing my channel and editing in Final Cut Pro.

    Does it happen with your Mac Studio that if you cut during playback the audio waveform disappear and only if you stop it reappears again? Or when you zoom into the timeline the waveform looks glitchy and took seconds to get back to normal? I hate this bug and is the only thing that is keeping me from switching from PP to Final Cut. I Have a mac m1 mini. I need to cut fast during playback and i need the waveforms always visible. Hope Apple would fix it since is a groundbreaking problem for me, but months, years are passing...

    • @Gabby16bit
      @Gabby16bit Před rokem +1

      For anyone reading i found the fix: Download command post a free plugin, go to preferences -> final cut -> Render during playback and boom it works.

      CommandPost saves the day! I have CommandPost installed, so I'll have to jump in there and enable that preference. I don't think I have that one set up yet... I've just been dealing with the horrible waveform rendering that has always plagued FCP.

    As far as color accuracy, I like knowing that everyone looking at photos I have processed from RAW files on this thing will look exactly like I wanted them to on every iPhone, every iPad, and every Mac laptop and Mac display. I have a "calibrated" TV, an LG OLED 4K with Dolby HDR certification, and running it from an Apple TV box my colors also look exactly like what I want them to, and remarkably close to the Studio Display. I think Dolby and Apple provide the only consumer priced color acurate displays (on devices, computers, and TVs) available, so to me, aiming for any other color standard makes no sense.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Před rokem +2

      Excellent point, Bob. And yes, I definitely want that image continuity across devices which is why I'm not rushing to get Cody over here and calibrate my Studio Display. But there are slight differences because the Studio Display is older display tech while my iPhone 13 Pro Max and 14" M1 Pro MacBook Pro are micro-LED with ProMotion. Maybe someday I'll get them all on the same page!

    Great video, on the money about features and human touch with your daughter and not getting frustrated that she got in your shot. Re-sale value on these is awesome, I bought two tilt versions to later sell them to get the hight adjustable version and only lost $200/monitor on depreciation. The built in speakers are awesome I think for a built in, and yes, the camera could be better, but I like the clean look of my monitors without having to buy external speakers, webcam and mic. No other manufacture comes close to the build quality and picture quality.

    Value 100%. As I get older I realize the importance of selecting the things I own. Tired of buying garbage quality items, just for it to end up in the trash a year later or sold for next to nothing. I have a MacBook from 2012 that works great outside of its shortened battery life. It has the original retina screen which is perfect (zero light leak and perfectly uniform) and great sounding speakers.

  • @akyhne
    @akyhne Před 13 dny +1

    What an honest review. I'm no Apple user and never will be. I'm just interested in monitors, TVs and calibration.
    I totally get what you're talking about, about the instant wake-up. My Sony TV's remote uses IR to turn on and off the TV, but Bluetooth for everything else. I can be anywhere in my apartment and my remote will reach the TV. I couldn't live without now.
    About speakers, I've seen everyone and anyone praising the built-in speakers of the Studio display. Even content creators, who use them entirely for video editing and sound design. Only studio monitors can serve this purpose if you take your audio serious. Not monitor speakers, however great they sound. They simply don't go deep enough.
    So cudos for using "real" speakers. They don't even have to be that expensive. An audio calibration can do a lot to the sound and is pretty cheap and simple to do.
    If your displays are calibrated corrctly, there should be next to no difference, at least in SDR/Rec.709 mode. Even cheap displays can be calibtrated to be fairly accurate. Difference is contrast ratio and how dark and/or bright they can go. And of course how much of a specific color space they support.

    Yep, I'm still using the 2010 27" Apple Cinema Display and 2011 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display. The quick on display sounds simple but it really is a big deal to me as well. Plus not fussing with trying to figure out why it won't connect when connecting to other monitors can be annoying. I think they built in the power cable because sometimes the power cable will get slightly loose on my old Apples displays and not turn on - have to push it back in to turn on. I'm considering upgrading to a new monitor and been researching every brand. I still come back to the Apple Studio Display because they just work and are perfectly DCI-P3 color matched to my Macbooks. I do like your setup with the new Apple Studio Display in the middle and 2 older ones off to the side. I would probably do the same. Looks good!

    thank you for the amazong video! i've got one question. What if you connect the Thunderbolt display to the Studio display with using thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter, does the thunderbolt display work??
    I'm using MBP 14" and wanting to use those kind of setup. But there are not many thunderbolt 2(female)to hdmi converter in the market as i've found.
    So I'm wondering if Daisy chain works that way. Even the thunderbolt port on the Studio display has to plug with the Macbook itself.
    The reason why I have to use that way because I'm using a Caldigit dock but the usb c port on that dock, it doesn't support usb-c input(which is the same shape with the thunderbolt 2 to 3 converter).

    So I think you recommend it for video editing, but probably using dual screens at best? ...right? My issue is the timeline in Premiere or any other software that uses a timeline editing feature. I wouldn't mind purchasing this studio for this exact purpose, but would an ultra-wide screen be best? Of course, taking the specs that the studio has into consideration as well. Buying 2 studios would be pretty pricey, but I can see the usability factor as an investment down the line if I went this route instead of an ultra-wide.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Před 10 měsíci

      It really depends on your preference for how you want to view your timelines. A good friend of mine hates using multiple displays but doesn't like how short ultra-wide monitors are, so he uses a now discontinued 42" Samsung curved TV as his only monitor, and he swears by it. You can watch that vid here: czcams.com/video/mNYXQvX-swE/video.html
      I don't know why my mind gravitates to all these monitors - I really like having FCP in my center and left monitor, with the right monitor dedicated to notes, Safari, Twitter, Messages, etc. I'm okay with my FCP timeline being "small" in comparison to what it would be with an ultra-wide monitor.
      And yeah, keep in mind that with the Studio Display you're going to see it retain a lot of its original value 5, even 10 years down the road, and I just can't handle my non-Apple monitors taking FOREVER to wake from sleep. It drives me nuts. Which is why I keep hanging on to these old Thunderbolt Displays.

    Good point on "re-selling" and practical ROI. I have bought and sold MANY Macs and PCs (and periphs) in the last 15 years. It was obvious early on that my used Apple products sold at a higher price and far more quickly than my Windows stuff. I too have had to just give away (even trash☹) PCs, monitors, etc. Even cannibalizing and selling parts turned into a pointless hassle.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Před rokem

      Exactly. Friends who aren't creatives but work in IT or are gamers have spent good money on Windows PCs and cheap monitors/peripherals and they end up going to electronics recycling or the thrift store because they're worthless. Yet my 9 yr old 15" Retina MacBook Pro still sells on eBay for close to $500 (and also works perfectly, BTW).
      It's always hard to buy that first Apple product but once you do and resolve yourself to selling your old Apple gear to buy the new Apple gear, you'll be happy you're in that ecosystem.

If it’s 500$-1000$ more my guess is people will aim to snag a studio display for like $500-700$. I think we are cut from the same cloth. Everything you said resonates. I’m at a point where I have to start from scratch and build my next system. My son is a PC guy and a bit of a gamer. You know what that means, he has a complex relationship with all things Apple. He collects all the old models for fun but his daily driver is a home build PC. He is dying for me to break the grip Apple has had on me since my first MacBook Pro in 2006. He is a bottom line guy whereas I am an experience guy. I want to love my computer. I think I would absolutely love a studio display, every time I sit down at the computer. I currently have a cheap Dell and I actively hate it every time I look at it. My next decision is going to be Mac mini or MacBook Pro with studio display. I travel a lot, am not a power user and I usually bring my iPad Pro on the road. That said I both miss a laptop and I miss a strong desktop workstation. My dream set up would be to have both. Right now I am researching the laptop option but I’m thinking very seriously about a studio display regardless of what I buy.

    • @matthewTobrien
      @matthewTobrien  Před 4 měsíci

      Value buyer! It's all good. Stay strong! Don't let the forces of evil pull you into the world of inexpensive custom-built PCs... Sure they may be more stable and reliable than they were when I was making them (early 2000s), but there's no way I'd ever switch to Windows/custom-built. Not a chance.
      It's really hard to pull the trigger on the Studio Display because of cost - I totally get it. But there is something to be said about LOVING your monitor AND knowing it will retain 25-35% of its original value 5+ years from now on the used market. Can't say that about your Dell - probably couldn't give it away.
      I'm spoiled with having 3 Macs and I am continually surprised by how well my M2 Pro Mac mini performs when it comes to live-streaming and kicking out quick videos for my channel members.
      Stick with Apple!

  • @alejmc

    Let’s add to that the wobbliness of most displays out there. I got 2 thunderbolt displays, a Studio Display, an iMac 2020 (at one place) and recently a Mac Studio (at another place, realized that the iMac is definitely going away after 2mins of using the Mac Studio).
    Sometimes I mix and match with a cheaper display as an extra non important monitor at each location… and I just can’t with that wobbly, plastic, faded image anymore. Plus when using ‘game’ mode settings, scrolling fast as when skimming through email, ghosting is usually quite visible.
    The TB displays even one being 10+ yo and the other 11+, are still rigid solid, useful, convenient. The Studio display is even more convenient since a single TB4 cable transmits and charges when connecting an ipad or laptop.
    The only real negative in my opinion is that it lost the daisy chain capability, but it is my understanding that it’s because it wouldn’t be able to feed another 5K (vs the 2.5K of the TB Displays) in a chain.
    Yes it’s pricy, but I totally agree that it’s completely worth it in my opinion. I bought two: one close to release, another one refurbished a month ago.

    I've never seen your channel before. Impressive.
    Yes, you are correct, the monitor will (and should) out live the computer by a long shot. That was my biggest problem with the 27" iMac. My 2013 27" iMac just died (long tragic story). It was long in the tooth at the end. If the display were separated from the CPU, it would have been upgraded years ago, as opposed to dumping on my kids. Sadly, when I bought it, it had a target display mode. Apple killed that feature a few years back, which removed its utility for me as an external display.
    As such, I'm crazy happy with he new 27" studio display. I'll have this for many years, and with various computer upgrades during that time.
    Interesting fact: I had one of the original Studio Displays (17" LCD). That also was a GREAT display with my G4 Cube. Single cable for power and video (ADC interface). The downside to that was you couldn't use it on anything that didn't have an ADC plug. I'd have kept that display for much longer if not for that. At least this new display has something a bit more open.

    27 INCH ??? IT's The SIZE, that's the Question ! WHY would You want to EDIT on a DispLay-Size of YESTERDAY?
    Especially with FCP with it's Non-Scrolling TimeLine. 32 inches is the Minimum Size Factor, if Youre spending aLL Day editing. Apple is REVERSE-Cutting Edge. they bring out a 24 inch iMac in 2007 and then take it away and give you a 21 inch iMac. they brought out a 17 inch MacBook Pro then they take it away and then give you a 15 inch MacBook Pro. Their Moves are Not LogicaL when you take out their schrewd profiteering, ie Exhorbitant storage pricing.

      Valid points, but I disagree. With 5k resolution the 27” is great for me, especially as I plan to have 3 total in my edit bay. 32” is too big for that, but it would be perfect if I just wanted a single or dual-displays. I’m an idiot and want 3 plus a dedicated preview monitor. Haha.
      And I love the 14” MacBook Pro. So much of what I do is productivity on the laptop - I hate the idea of lugging around a 16” or 17” notebook.

    You're wrong about the colouraccuracy of the Studio Display. What you see in the Studio Display ist nearly 98% correct. But if you look at your Videos on worse Television Screens or a bad Dell Monitor, it would be terrible wrong. Don't assess the right Display thrue wrong Devices.

      The color accuracy depends on the color profile he's using on the Studio monitor. And we don't use terms like a percentage for color accuracy, as they are meaningless.
      He wrote in another comment, that he uses the standard profile, that comes with the monitor. It's not color accurate, if the display isn't calibrated. Any good TV can be very color accurate, if color calibrated, so your point is only partly correct.
      His Dell monitor is pretty cheap, so he should be using it as the NLE display, not the monitor display. Buy if he calibrated it, it could be fairly accurate. But I guess he chose this setup, because of its resolution.

    You're high on copium if you think anyone will be paying 500 dollars for a display that is outdated and using old tech TODAY, 10 years from now.
    For less than a thousand dollars today we have world leading display manufacturers selling 42 inch 4k 120hz OLED 10bit native panels with much thinner bezels than this and beautiful metal design. This thing is IPS with an ancient backlight and 60hz. I can't even imagine how good of a display you'll be able to buy for a 1000 dollars 10 years from now.

      Haha - but isn’t it reflective of the puzzling choices surrounding the Studio Display itself? I thought so…
