  • Angela Duckworth is the Rosa Lee and Egbert Chang Professor of Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Founder and CEO of Character Lab, a not-for-profit whose mission is to advance the science and practice of character development. She’s also the author of Grit, a New York Times bestseller that examines why some people succeed and others fail, and why talent is hardly a guarantor of success. Angela and Shane discuss whether human behavior is constant or circumstantial, the mindsets that help us succeed in life, developing our passion, and personal rules for success.

Angela, I like that you say: "that sometimes looks like laziness even though, underneath the surface, it is not at all laziness.” I think it may never be wise to frame people’s inaction as laziness. More accurate and useful explanations may lie in their mindset and motivation.

Good to know the logic of appropriateness in additional to logic of consequence which the former is indeed important!

I really don't get the "person" stance, if we are all a collection of experiences, which have been shaped by situations how can you derive a personality from that. I attribute people's ability to adapt to randomness, the more variables in the environment = varying degrees of adaptation. Example someone born in modern society vs being born in a remote location
