- This is the first in a series of masterclasses in the tunings and technique of Joni Mitchell for guitar and dulcimer by Chris While one the UK's formost singer/songwriters.
in the late 90s Chris, along with Julie Matthews, Maartin Allcock, Peter Zorn and Neil Fairclough formed a band called 'Blue Tapestry' a celebration of the music of Joni Mitchell and Carole King. They did three tours and made a live album.

I was here for the dulcimer lesson but... Wow, that voice 😍
Stopped by to hear another dulcimer...but found her voice was icing on the cake 🎶🎵
Such a beautiful voice
I don't normally watch instructional videos for the pure joy of listening to the teacher but I keep watching your video over and over again just to hear the sound of your voice!
I've tried to learn this song on guitar for years. I'm getting a dulcimer today and hoping to have more success. Do you know which instrument(s) she uses for this song on Blue?
This was so beautiful I literally cried. My daughter just built a mountain dulcimer and gifted it to me as an early mother's day gift. I have been wanting to tackled to songs on "Blue" for a while. This is great!
Seems like People are still out here discovering - Beautiful Rendition & Beautiful Voice ! Thank you!
This is a beautiful interpretation of the song. Thank you for demystifying the dulcimer part. You have a wonderful voice!
You did a awesome job of covering Joni's masterpiece song . Joni would be proud for sure. 👍😊
The most beautiful rendition of a Joni Mitchell song!
You made me cry. You did that so nicely. It was one of my favorite songs. Just WOW
This is gorgeous. Kept pinching myself when you started singing. Wow.
Wow. Omg..., I fell in love with Joni's voice a hundred years ago. Now there seems a mistress.... Thank you for this song.
Outstanding...vocals and dulcimer. What a song!
Beautiful job! I just ordered a dulcimer yesterday, and this morning I thought..."Dare I hope that someone has posted how to play 'A Case of You' on the dulcimer?" Thank you! It is indeed one of THE most beautiful songs, and you play it so well.
Very nicely done! Loved your rendition. I went to a Joni dulcimer workshop at a festival in Ontario once called Mariposa. Never forget it. “65”
I can't belive that there are a handful of 'dislikes' for this. Ridiculous! Thanks for posting this. i ordered a dulcimer last night on the strength of this.
What an amazing voice you have- you do justice to Joni while remaining unique unto yourself. Absolutely wonderful!
Awesome! Compelling to watch and a joy to listen to. First time to see a Dulcimer being played… and so nicely. Thank you!
Absolutely gorgeous. Musically and vocally. WOW!
Your voice...You carry within you a near-magical grace that shines and melts and soothes as you sing. Thank you
That was fantastic Chris, it sent a shiver up my spine. You have the same amazing voice range as Jonie and sweet as summer wine.
Playing that dulcimer part may be fairly easy a you say, but singing that song so we’ll surely isn’t! Beautiful voice and a really great version of that song. Thanks.
Lovely voice! You captivated her sound and vibe well! Thank you. 🙏☀️💚🥰
What a pleasure to hear you Chris. I've been covering Joni tunes all my life and playing dulcimer for about 20 yrs. You do her great justice and you're very generous to share your knowledge. The dulcimer is such a soothing instrument and so versatile. I look forward to more videos. Thanks
Oh my goodness Chris. You just had me in floods of tears!!! I love your version of this brilliant song! Thank you.
Oh my your voice is just beautiful and fluid and full of emotion. Your dulcimer playing is a fantastic accompaniment to the rhythm’s and dynamics of your unique voice. I would love to sing harmonies with you. I, too, am a perennial j Mitchell admirer and when I was 13 I sang Tin Angel in my high school “Hootenanny “ series and my best friend Margaret and I smoked a bowl of Hashish my friend Milton brought back from the Canary Islands. Sister Margaret had just taken the vows of The Little Sisters of The Poor and she had an eqsquisite voice! Luckily we lived in a fairly progressive town of Washington D. C. as we often were barefooted when we sang in our “Revolutionary” Folk Masses and offered alternative hymn singing. We Sang lots of Sacred Harp style songs very popular even today in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. It is a very straight tone singing, one volume usually very expressive and Loud, no switching of dynamics from loud to soft. Anyway, since I discovered your wonderful postings I have taken all my instruments and placed them all over my bedroom - my guitars and dulcimer, my two autoharps, my mandolin , my ukulele(I’m a member of a Ukulele chorus ) my harmonica, and my banjo as well as my Lute!
I am so happy and overjoyed I have discovered a new musician with such talent. Thank you! - Michael of St. Louis, Missouri USA
Ah that is so lovely, thank you so much and enjoy making beautiful Joni music.

This is precisely why I bought a dulcimer. Thank you so much for putting this tutorial up. Not only really clear and easy to follow, but you sing it beautifully. Simply gorgeous 🥰
One thing... what is that little movement with your finger as you walk back down in the intro section? It looks like a quick slide and pull to the fret below?
I love how you just tuned the strings to what works for you. Still discovering DAdd tuning before exploring other styles. Your voice is gold!
Amazing voice and great job playing the dulcimer. Ahhh, music! :)
At last a British dulcimer player - and a one time member of the Albion Band as well! What joy. More toons please.

Hi Chris. I am just reviving my dulcimer after many years of not playing, and this has been a favorite Joni song for ever. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I love your warm and generous style of teaching. I see it is 3 years since you were intending to do more tutorials but since there don't seem to be any more I guess life has got in the way! Any chance of continuing even after all this time? Best wishes!
I came out of curiosity about the dulcimer which was great but your voice is absolutely beautiful!! ❤️

Wow Chris I could listen to you all night, what a beautiful voice. 🙂
Thank you, that was gorgeous. Just recently got a new dulcimer and love the approachability of the instrument. Also like that it's so light! love ya work! :-)
Chris, I'm getting an Appalachian Duclimer for my birthday and am hoping to learn some Joni stuff which is how I found your video. I'm glad I did and not just because you instruct beautifully but I was absolutely floored by your performance of the song. What a love letter you've composed not just to the person in your heart whome you are singing to but also to Joni. Your performance is the perfect example of a gifted performer deeply understanding and respecting the source material by not just staying true to it, but enhancing it with your own very soulful embellishments. I was really touched anew by a song I've known most of my life. Brilliant. -Tad
What a wonderful vocal performance and interpretation of this incredible song. Than you for posting it, especially in the form of a lesson!
The bass string is tuned an octave below the other strings. The middle one and the two highest are tuned in unison. If you typically tune D-A-d, try moving all the strings down to Gs. So the bass string and the high pair come down a perfect 5th. The middle string comes down a whole step.
Thank you so much for your wonderful video. Thanks to you, I learned to play this beautiful song from your crystal clear and very helpful instruction!
WOW... lovely, lovely, and lovely. Thanks so much!
Your playing and voice are beautiful!!! Thank you.
Bravo - very nice rendition ! I've always been amazed on how Joni was able to compose beautiful songs using such basic chording. She's a very talented lady indeed !
Chris, we've seen you many times at Sun, Hitchin etc - you're one of the few performers I would trust to sing Joni songs :)
That was absolutely beautiful. I literally cried.
Brilliant....thanks for sharing that, it was superb :-)
Brilliant, wonderful tutorial and performance. Thank you 🙏

Can't wait for your next lessons. Thank you so much for your beautiful tutorial.
