I’m at the opposite side of children and travel as a solo single 60yr old female and get charged the same as couple on a site, I think it’s just what it is. I’m fully self contained and don’t use any facilities just looking for security. I’m happy to free camp also. I love watching your adventures and thank you for your time and effort that is involved in producing these great adventures.

Your point is so true and contradicts the C.P's argument on the parent tax too. Is it the site that costs them to maintain or the number of people in the caravan park. If they can't reduce the price for a solo traveller then they shouldn't increase the price for parents. It should simply be a per site rate.
But clearly, they take the path of what ever puts more money in their pocket...

I’m a 60yo Kiwi working in the Middle East and intend to do the great loop solo next year as I embark upon retirement (Op Far [not Phar] Lap 😂).
With rent going up more than the pension, living in a house is rapidly becoming unaffordable. With free camps closing down, living in Australia is becoming unaffordable for many. Thank you for sharing your cost breakdowns. I'm hoping to be living on the road, solo, in the next few years, but, unlike everyone else, I'll be starting out on a very low budget.
Good luck with it all. I think in a vehicle alone and as a solo person the costs can be kept very low.
Glad you had the balls to be critical about how the large supermarkets are ripping off the consumer. Keep travelling. Your kids are having the experience that most kids can only dream of.
Yeah groceries are a killer. I think our kids are having the best upbringing, so proud of what we are doing with them.
Metcash, the company who owns IGA are renowned for acquiring a discount chain, eg Franklins, and converting it to "upmarket" to increase the prices, it's virtually criminal the way they have butchered the Black and Gold products by changing the name, decreasing the sizes and pretty much doubling the prices.
I went around Australia with two kids recently in motor home. The amazing thing was I did not pay even 1 night for accomodation over 3 months. I just sleep wherever I park. Even in Subiaco in Perth centre for three nights. No issues.
It can be done. More difficult with caravan which is why I would never own one 🤷♂️
Stealth camping is one way to beat the cost of accommodation for sure haha. Though you of course have to avoid getting caught.
@@SvedosTrippin well as far as I understand it, it is not illegal to sleep in a car in Australia. Councils can make certain areas as “no camping, sleeping” etc, but that applies only in certain areas. Ive slept in motorhome outside police stations, at kings canyon itself, in Airlie beach, Darwin city, Hobart, Sydney harbour at kiribilli near bridge, Melbourne st kilda and everywhere in between.
On my bike, I stealth camp in tent. But in motorhome, you park your vehicle and that’s it. It’s like any other parked vehicle and you don’t make noise or open to anyone 🤷♂️

Going un noticed is the smart mans choice, as soon as anything becomes known it gets regulated into another subscription to exist arrangement. Like paying to park your vehicle on some dirt with someone elses name on it. The elite shItters will work out how to monetize breathing under some bs environmental benefit policy at some point Im sure.

It’s astonishing to see just how much costs have increased for the caravanning community. Thanks for pulling this wonderful resource together. Another brilliant video! So true on all your points. We, too, keep detailed financial records and, although we've only been 18 mths living in our van, we've noticed our monthly totals have increased quite a bit in that time. I LOVE Caravan Overnight Farmstay. We've met some lovely farmers, and seen some gorgeous places. Also found their farmers' charges to be much more reasonable than Hip Camp listed properties.
CoF is way better than hip camps. Good old struggling Aussie farmers only charging what's fair. While C P's do what they do...

WA in my opinion is the most expensive to travel.
Thankfully our caravan has massive storage for food but with two extra mouths to feed like you have it’s not easy mate.
Having said that being on the road two years did make me change the way we shop and recipie we cook. All the best mate.

Good video mate, well thought out and facts presented.
The aim when setting up my rig was to maximixe solar, batteries and water, as Caravan parks are by far the major expense (unless you are on a limited time trip and need to cover many KM's per day, then it will be fuel)
To this end I have 2.75Kw of fixed solar, 2000 AH of lithium batteries and 1000 litres of water...the issue is that I had to go to a truck-based rig to carry the weight.
I run a domestic chest freezer and an aircond/heater Mini split.
I travel at 80km/ph to keep my fuel costs down and get 21.0 liters per 100km. (I also added an additional diesel tank to try to skip those expensive fuel stops)
I went down the path of ......spend the $$$ upfront to reduce the ongoing costs as much as possible, basically trying to minimise all the cons you mentioned in the video.
It's good advice, but to avoid caravan parks completely you would have to stay in free camping places only. There are large parts of aus where you can't avoid a C.P. unfortunately.

It's fantastic, we are out at a stone fruit farm right now, fresh cheap produce, no one but us, the trees and some cows around.

Thanks for the great video. We are starting to prepare for a lap around oz. We are retired and have owned a van for about ten years now. We have done mainly short trips with a couple of interstate trips . We have just upgraded our tow vehicle and are now looking at upgrading the van to one with an ensuite . So your video on what it costs has been of great interest to us. It’s unfortunate that there are some things that we can’t avoid when travelling which means we have to be really on the ball. Thanks for the video we enjoy watching them as they are quite helpful.
It's certainly getting expensive but there are ways to cut costs and we try to share those. As I mentioned in this one accommodation can be a huge expense or a minor one depending on where you stay.

I'm shocked at the price increase for caravans! I knew they'd gone up but I had no idea they'd gone up that much!
We bought our 2017 Jayco Starcraft outback with all the extras in 2019 for $32k, at the time I thought it was expensive, now I think we got a bargain!😂
The cost of caravan parks should absolutely be per site and not per person, especially when they offer no discount for singles. It's a blatant rip off to charge that much extra for kids.
I would bet you could sell your 2017 caravan now 7 years later for more than you paid for it. That's absolutely crazy isn't it.

Lots of great information, thanx. And i agree with your comment on "Wiki Camps" it used to be fantastic but now just painful. I've commented on the forum and suggested maybe have a small monthly fee to put towards employing some 16 year old to get it back to where it was.
When you consider how much money the company who owns it has, it's pretty crazy they let it become like this.

It does seem that's how C.Ps are secretly increasing their rates. Just making more money of one particular group of people (parents).

I travel solo & pay the same site fee as a couple (some places even allow up to 6 people per site at no extra cost). A group of 6 will utilise the facilities 6 times as much as a solo traveller. Therefore, i think its fair to charge extra for more people, even when the people are kids.
Larger groups often pay for themselves by buying more...eg: drinks from the reception/kiosk
I've not experienced many c.p's that charge by site.
We would absolutely encourage that. It's the same with many N.Ps now, they used to be per site but seem to be moving to per person as with many bush camps.

Yup, they are getting crazy expensive.
Some caravan parks in and around the Burnett in Qld are now charging approx $240 per week for a patch of grass to pitch a tent with no power. These parks are also charging up to $20 per person for travelers or transients ( due to cost of living) for a shower.
That's crazy, $20 for a shower. Gym memberships were less than $20 a week when I was back on the GC and had shower and sauna.
We head back to East coast this year, not looking forward to accomodation costs when we get there.

If your on a budget yes it’s extremely difficult to do a trip around Australia these days. I did a trip around Australia 45 years ago with my mum,dad,and sister in an old school bus converted to a mobile home. Everything was a lot cheaper 4 decades ago and there wasn’t as many crazies around. To do a trip around Australia today you need to be financially well off to do it comfortably and not have constant worries about money.
I think it's a massive amount more expensive than just 5 years ago. Must have been so quiet out there 45 years ago.
A dehydrator maybe helpful.
Look up "diy backpacking meals dehydrated".
Cook double or triple quality, dehydrate the extras.
They don't use slot of space, for the cost savings over time.
DIY jerky, can be used in cooking as well.

Definable hoping to move into some over night hike camps with the kids as they are getting bigger and more capable.
@@SvedosTrippin when planning overnight hike/camping, particular with children... remember water weighs 1 kilo per litre. In extreme weather, 2 litres or more per our can be required. (Lose through sweating etc).
So plan around water availability, as well as avoiding spring to start (snakes are more active and sometimes a little aggressive if they feel infringed upon or startled.)
Test your camping equipment, and practice set up.
Pack as light as you safely can.
Plan for a good phone reception area or keep a satellite communicator like a zelo or inreach on your person.
Preferably start with a location that has camping area , pit toilet, and don't assume water tanks will have water.
A Sawyer squeeze or a Sawyer mini and a cnoc can make a good gravity filter system for water purification.

Well covered, thanks and travelling slow is certainly a fuel saver.
For sure, don't over drive your fuel budget.
Still have to go north and south every season though, so KM's will rack up.
Great in-depth analysis. We've managed to stay afloat through combined house-sitting, freecamping, cheap hicamps and the occasional caravan park. We try to book a year in advance for housesit's so we know where we'll be and then work out the other forms of accommodation in our van and our itineraries for sight seeing and entertainment. Our van only cost $10k for a rear door opening van and 12k for our diesel Mahindra tow vehicle. There's 3 of us and it works well (back single beds turned into a king and dinette into a bunk with a 90L fridge freezer underneath). I do all minor services to the car and van and we spent $7k on our itech offgrid lithium setup for full-time offgrid living. Our budget is $4680 a month and we definitely can manage it and have cash left over.
Your doing very well if your staying at close to 50K a year. I assume your travelling very slowly which is probably making a big difference.
We have tried to find house sits before but it doesn't really work with the way we travel. And doing YT we need to keep on the move to keep making fresh new content.
But house sits for those moving slowly is certainly a great way to cut your costs.
@goingplacesoz. We have met up a couple of times recently and enjoy your channel. Your video is a great insight in understanding costs of travelling. However as the majority of vanners only travel occasionally such as holiday times etc, then folks accept the cost increases.Certainly caravan parks are full of "occasional" vanners and campers. This is true re. the occasional campers keeping the C.P's full, I mean before we started this, we were at a caravan parks every holidays (though we did go 50/50 with N.P's too).

Great video. We just upgraded to a motor home and we were lucky enough to sell our van within two days for $2500 more than we paid for it new back in 2015. We picked up a 2018, 40,000 km Iveco / Winnebago Kirra for $75,000 less than new. Still the same features, except for the outside decals, as a new one. NSWNP get you in the neck every time. One of our regular camping spots down near Tathra actually cost more than the local caravan park when you have kids. We detested the charges per child at NP so back in the day when we had a group of us with kids we all said we had one child and then we’d tell the kids to scatter when the “Bush” Ranger came around to collect the fees. The kids thought it was great fun. It’s odd to me that the accommodation industry can charge based on the season when in other industries that is called price gouging but it’s just the way it is. I think it’s a case of adapt or die. Im so willing to be spending more money on fuel to tour our country than spending money on fuel to get to a job everyday. Yes, touring is getting more expensive but at least we don’t have the prices they have in the US or Europe, yet. Cheers.

With the free camps it’s a hard one.
I live in Cairns, & travel all around in the Far Nth Qld.
A lot of the free parks up here get overrun by the backpackers in the dry season.
Esp between Cairns, & Pt Douglas.
They use the trees, & beaches as there toilets.
They travel in old vans with no toilets, showers etc.
It does make it hard for the genuine tourists who are self contained, & doing the right things.

Yes, I know the area and I've seen the amount of backpackers. I think with back packers, many of them have this feeling that it's not their country so why respect it. And that's why they make a mess, sad situation isn't it...
That is so correct, & they honestly don’t care about the fines as once they leave the country they can’t be traced.

when my wife and I started travelling in mid 2015 the most expensive CV park we found was $45 per night. we frequently paid $30-$38 per night ( excluding Big4 parks which are insanely expensive) the av price of a park today is outrageous. when you stay at a CV park today for a week , its as expensive as renting a house. we free camp as much as possible. I study global economics , global politics and monetary history - we “ Will” see in the next 24 months, the biggest stock market crash in history and a global depression. “ sooner if WWIII breaks out, which is also very likely “ now is not the time to buy expensive items, nor expensive houses, now is the time to get yourself out of debt and accumulate a nice mountain of savings, for around the corner will be once in a generation bargains on all assets. Things that cant go on forever wont………… When your outgoings exceed your income, your upkeep will be your downfall.
So I don't have long to make some money... at least we are debt free and have some savings. And in case of WWIII, we can't be better positioned to run and hide somewhere remote.

@@SvedosTrippin my wife and I always said that an income stream we could take on the road with us, that only required a laptop and internet connection would be the perfect income solution, ultimately we arrived at stock trading and crypto investing- my wife ( who is better at math than I ) taught herself stock trading on the US market, after 12 months of studying and 6 months of simulated trading, she started trading. With a starting capital of 15k, she has regularly made over $1000 a week for the past 2 years, I understand the crypto market very well and much better than my wife , so I invest in this , crypto can be hugely profitable if you understand it , can identify tokens with real world use cases vs shit coins, and understand the market cycles ( and have a high degree of tolerance for volatility. We don’t make regular weekly income from crypto, but we can and have made made more than a year’s income in a matter of weeks. Both these income streams require only a laptop and internet connection ( and starting capital) in both cases your Num 1 focus should be capital preservation ( before) accumulation.
your right, the USA is going down the tubes with its debt blowout and interest rates MUST rise. If rates dont go up......inflation with get even worse.

We look at our budget on a monthly basis. We are paid monthly so we can have a look at money in Vs money out
Its not always travellers who mess up free camp sites. A lot of times its locals who use them as convenient tips and party sites.

Hi guys another great video from a happy subscriber. Your van was VERY cheap to buy. It’s cost us $85k to build an 18’ all electric off road, single axle composite van. Thats just the material and parts, my labour is free.

As a non-parent, I'm a tiny bit surprised with the parent tax. It seems like some accommodation places may be double dipping. It sounds like the caravan parks with child friendly entertainment options (pools, play equipment etc) are the most expensive places to stay. However, they are also charging extra dollars per night for children. It doesn't seem fair. IMHO, in a perfect world, since these places are already charging a premium amount to begin with, they shouldn't charge extra per child.
Thanks for your opinion. We wouldn't mind if the just covered their costs on the kids, couldn't be more than $5 a child that would be fair and they would probably still make a profit. But it seems to us that at $10 to $15 they simply make more profit of parents. I've just read a comment from someone that was charged $5 extra a night for their dog 😭.

Yup, Australia certainly isn't a cheap place to live. Hipcamps is OK, we do use it, though they slug you $4.50 a night just to use their service, then also dip into that number that the host makes well, so they double dip and it's probably why the hosts often have a pretty high nightly rate for what they offer.

But I agree, travelling in Australia has become ridiculously expensive. It makes the decision to holiday in Thailand SOOOO much easier!
Yeah even Thailand isn't what it used to be. I went in early 20's had the best time and most authentic and unique experiences for the price of peanuts.
Went again in my mid 30's and a tuk tuk ride cost as much as a taxi in aus.

Yeah, just groceries in general are getting so expensive. It all started with covid, they some how justified the price hike and now it's all over they won't take them back to where they were.

Rentals are unaffordable for most people ..many homeless people .. Australia is very expensive..food ..etc ..fuel ..rent ..mortages ..etc ..harsh times .
Enjoyed the insight and wondered considering you need at least $225k for a reasonable size new van and a tank to pull it. I’d like to see a cost comparison of just buying a hybrid all wheel drive sedan and stay in caravan parks/motels/hotels on the trip around….no van and a lot less petrol. Of course you’d have to consider depreciation at the end of 2 years to see what your vehicle/van is worth then. I mean for $225k you could purchase 100 round the world airline tickets too…another comparison? Love your content
If you could be a couple and live in a 4wd (or a van) you could do it for so much cheaper. Not only is it less in fuel, but so many more Camp-site options open up allowing you to take advantage of more low cost / free camping options.

I’m a sole traveller around Australia for over 7 years now. I don’t get discounts on van sites because I’m just 1 person. I get charged the same as if I was a couple or even have kids as well. So I think it is fair that a couple with kids should pay more than me for sure. Kids can be noisy, dangerous and annoying to others a lot of the time. They have showers and flush toilets etc so yes they need to pay more than I do as a solo traveller. Sorry but that’s how it is.
Just to be clear, I've not suggested kids are free, but rather that $15 per child per night is excessive, there is no way a child is using that many resources.
I also think if a C.P won't drop their price for a solo traveller (1 person) is on a site. How can they justify upping their price if there more than 2 ppl on the site.
Caravan parks are just out to make as much money as possible and it's why we avoid them at all costs.
We’ve been living in our van coming up 3 years. Must point out we are a different age demographic and our kids are doing their own thing. But the easiest way to avoid high camp site fees is…………..work on them……..that’s what we do, spend a good few good months in certain places and enjoy the lifestyle….vast majority it’s a free pitch or a very minimal charge and you also get paid!!….. bonus…..and we work with plenty of great people like yourselves travelling with kids…….I can understand the “CZcamsr” phenomenon (come across a huge amount of people doing exactly what you are doing and thinking millions will watch) and wanting to get sponsors on board and good luck with that……anyways, I hope you continue your adventures as long as you all enjoy what you re doing…..Catch you down the road…Ian
My wife works and hates staying anywhere longer than a week. I'd love to stay longer and working at a park doesn't sound awful to me. But I gotta do what the boss says haha.

The big change in caravan park pricing happened between 2008 & 2012 - $20 + to $60+, The numbers of people on the road jumped dramatically & the attitudes of travellers and those catering to them changed as well. P.S. When did a tent spot for one, no power, cost the same as powered van site for a couple happen?
they have certainly become a luxury item with what they charge. Considering its just a power supply and a hose and a tiny block of land.

I finished my build on a truck about 2 weeks into lock downs and moved in and I count my self ultra lucky, prices for everything have gone up at least 30% and rent more like 50% since then and I would be working purely to pay for a roof over my head which I'd barely be at because Im at work, what a sick situation created by a sick civilization. I will never live in a regular house again, I'm to used to the freedom not being a money slave brings...

My daughter son inlaw and 3 children just did a half lap, up the middle and down the eastern coast 6 months returning in Jan 2024 they were amazed how expensive the trip was...I think the other half will never happen

Caravan Parks used to include children for free. The costs have increased unbelievably. Some regions eg Tasmania Victoria and parts of NSW are still better value. But if your staying in a tourist hot spot eg Surfers Burleigh etc it will cost. I like the Aussie farmers idea I will follow this up. Caravan costs are insane. Being able to service your own van is essential. And be careful with old tyres. Many will sell you old tyres. And even light truck tyres have a limited life. Don't go shopping in the Territory prices can be outrageous. So stock up. Great video many useful tips.Very very scary statistic re costs.
Feels to me like C.P's simply make more profit of parents which is a pretty dirty business tactic. More people need to speak up and rebel against it.

Yeah, it's a bit of a joke isn't it. If I ever ran something I would charge per site. Man I'd love to stick it too the C.Ps and steal a bunch of their buisness by offering something fairer. One day, hey.

The prices they quote are "standard prices", whereas we all know they now charge a parent tax, laundromats are mostly now pay for use, and many other additional costs that are not included in the site price listed.
This is how all companies hide the real cost increase..... e.g. shrinkflation of supermarket items, etc
The parent tax has definitely gone up disproportionately, so they just make more money of parents. It's not like raising kids isn't costly enough with out C.Ps making more profit off us specifically 😒
ALDI being cheaper is a myth these days.

Two years ago I vacated a rental property and opted to live in a car (small hatchback) and gee that is so much cheaper than housing! My parents said they could have helped pay for something but wanted to teach me the value of sacrifice, now I'm at the stage of buying my own property Mar/Apr but don't want to become a wage slave again, so I think I'll keep doing what I've always done, and the way that Australia is going that will be more acceptable as time rolls on
Houses are becoming completely unaffordable in major areas aren't they (even in small towns we always have a look at real estate).
But friends of ours just sold their old, run down and beat up 3 bedroom in an undesirable suburb on the GC for $800K. That's just crazy.
We will probably never get back into the housing market unless we somehow become rich. BUT, no regrets, love the life were living.

But they still need to buy again, even after pocketing the capital gain... best thing I've done is learn to live without housing, then i'm untouchable with unaffordable housing. I might just keep tweaking my vehicle to be more of a camper and travel out further afield where the majority of city dwellers dare not venture

The grocery increase is 32% not 24%. Its the cost increase of the 2021 amount is the increase in cost you seem to have subtracted 2021 fro. 2023 to get 24%.. now i have to go to the first price increase because i was thinking that doesn't sound right. The food i could do in my head easy. Fuel is up 50% from original cost. 50%of 6640 is 3320 thats 50% increase

Anything over $5 for kids is too much. I feel like sometimes it’s cheaper to stay at motels
$5 per child would still cover more than the kids use and therefore be more profit for them from parents but I could tolerate $5.
Thanks for the interesting video. While I can understand charging for kids if they have to maintain playground equipment, I can't see how children are going to add costs to a park. Parents do it tougher than people without kids. We are retired and it's much cheaper to live now than when we were raising our boys. With your percentages, you are calculating them all wrong, you are way under stating them. With the van price, eg, $75k to $115k is a $40k increase. That's a 40/75*100 = 53% increase on the original price. I think you are doing 40/115 = 35% of the new price, but not 35% increase on $75k. I'm pretty sure you've done that will all of them. Anyway, not a criticism, just trying to help out.
How long do you stay at each campsite? Generally we like to stay at a camp for two weeks and investigate the area before moving on. I'm thinking it would have a big impact on your fuel bill if you stayed longer at each place. Liked & subscribed, good luck with your channel, but interesting to see where you go/stay.

Yeah, re. the parent tax, I think caravan parks simply make more money off parents. It doesn't cost them what they charge us to host our kids. And if you think of it like that, it's a pretty dirty way to do business.
Oh sorry forgot about how long we stay. Generally we stay at a location for a week. It kind of works well with the whole you tube video a week requirements.
Though now that we have just about done a full lap I would like to slow down to 2 week stays. Just need to convince Mel.
the good news on caravan build times (depending on manufacturer) have come down massively. one of the top premium brands can supply a new van in under 4 months (not 12-18mths).
Ahhh, that's fantastic news if your looking for a new van. We met ppl just 3 months ago that were waiting over a year for theirs so I assumed this was still the case.
cv parks should only charge per site having kids doesn't take up any more room than just a couple does a site is the same size no matter what
I expect the majority of couples in big vans (ours is small) would use up more power and resources with all their appliances running etc.
A small nominal charge for kids, say $2 to $5 would cover their costs, but it seems they just make more profit on families. Pretty inaustralian isn't it.

How do you make money?
We have a video that explains how we make money and afford to do what we do, it's called "how do we afford to travel Australia full time" and it came out about 3 months ago.
But the short answer is we work.
My partner and I tour infrequently because of costs versus income. To make it affordable most of our camping in Tasmania is either free camps, national parks and state reserves, however site availability is fairly restricted in summer and school holidays. Occasionally we will stay in caravan parks. Choices for cold weather camping are fairly reasonable, make sure the diesel heater is in good working condition. My partner and I are currently planning a trip to Queensland in September/October. This cuts out some of the premium season costs and we have to put up with the hotter weather. To minimise costs we will look for National Parks, low cost camps and free camping. Frequent stops at Caravan Parks are becoming an unaffordable luxury for us. To reduce fuel costs we won't be travelling as far, only going to South East Queensland rather than the North. This has the added bonus of being able to spend more time in fewer locations and have a good look around. Thanks for the tips on Park memberships and Nikki camps any money saved in accomodation can be spent elsewhere and be more enjoyable.

My daughter spends about $400 a week on groceries.
To be honest, my daughter at 6 ate like an adult male and still does now at 9. My son, on the other end of the spectrum, was eating like a sparrow and has done for the majority of our time on the road. He is only now in the last couple of months, starting to eat more.
It's definitely hard to make comparisons due to variances, of course. I also am selecting the cheapest possible meal options I can find for the last couple of years, while in the first year, we ate steaks and other treats more regularly.

Yeah station stays and farm camps are the way to go for sure. Though many of the station stays in WA want to charge C.P rates with out the facilities 🤔

My opinion is that I find it hard to believe that my 2 kids sleeping in our van add an extra $30 a day to the operating costs of the caravan park, it seems that the caravan park just makes more profit from parents. Just my opinion 🤷.

In my experience they are cheaper. The marinated whole ch. we get is $9 vs $13 at coles/woollies. Noodles, $2 for 5 vs $5 at Coles/woollies.
Perhaps some items aren't cheaper, but many are noticeable amounts cheaper.
Cheaper to go overseas.
