    Dude, you’re not supposed to use a 3/8 torque wrench to tighten Lugnuts use 1/2

    Ah they days when lug nuts were actually torqued. Haven't seen it in YEARS. Fuckers just ratchet down with the impact drivers until it won't ratchet anymore. I couldn't get my lugs to even begin to move when I had a flat last year. Even WITH a 24" steel bar as leverage. Sure, I'm only 140lbs, so don't have any ass behind me, but still, a-holes if you ask me.

      In some states, there's a law saying shops must use a torque wrench to tighten lug nuts. If your lug nuts were overtightened even once, your studs are likely stretched and need to be replaced. That's a big job and I wouldn't trust the shop that doesn't understand lug nuts to do it.
      Once upon a time... I had a Geo Metro. The torque spec on the lug nuts was 55 ft-lb. I took my car to a Big O tires in Phoenix to get a tire replaced, and I explained to the service advisor the torque spec and to tell the mechanic NOT to use an impact wrench. Well, they ignored me, used an impact wrench, and snapped off a couple lug nuts.
      They had me wait 2 hours because they wanted to fix the studs they broke and they needed parts delivered from Autozone. I decided if they're too stupid to install a lug nut, then pressing the hub apart and replacing studs is way past their abilities. I took my car back and drove all around town with missing lug nuts, until I gathered 16 studs and lug nuts from the auto parts stores.
      When I got home, 3 out of 4 lug nuts on each wheel snapped off when I went to unscrew them. The shop ruined all my studs by ignoring my request to torque the lug nuts correctly. I spent 4 hours fixing their mistake, and about $100 on parts. The bill would have been closer to $600 if I had a shop replace all the studs.
      The next time I had a shop work on my tires, I put my car on jack stands in the parking lot and brought in only the wheels.

      @@LabCoatPaul Damn, that sucks. Yeah, every tire place I think I've ever been to and actually watched just using an air wrench or nowadays a literal Dewalt impact wrench. The big ones. And those fuckers are on so tight I can barely get them to budge with my 24" steel pipe on the wrench for leverage. Just nuts. There should be a bit of resistance, a good amount of force and it should pop, easy peasy. How it always was when I was growing up. I've never had a stud come out though. And I generally I'm getting 2 or 3 used tires out of the 4 until it's time to replace all 4 again. Which I do like every 2 years when they wear down or I don't want to drive with a patched tire anymore ha. Working in construction and I just can't stop getting nails in my tires, no matter what precautions I take. It sucks. I'm talking about Ford F series work trucks. I'll talk to my dad's neighbor who's a mechanic on the side and does it for a living to about the stud popping thing. That sounds nuts. Maybe I'll take a tire off and see if the lug nut runs up and down the entire thread cleanly. That should be obvious.

      @@LabCoatPaulwow that's a crazy story. Last time I got all 4 tires replaced I checked immediately and they actually torqued all the lug nuts properly. So rare nowadays.
      Question though, when you try to thread a lug nut and it doesn't go all the way down by hand, is that because they've been stretched from over torqueing?

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@atnamesarelame Yes, it's likely that happened. The treads on either the stud or lug nut are damaged. Try a new lug nut on that stud. If it doesn't thread on by hand, that stud is bad.

    what made you look for Capri rebuild kit? Where does it say it fits and is the same mechanism?

    • @LabCoatPaul
      @LabCoatPaul  Před 8 měsíci +2

      I did a google image search for "ratchet rebuild kit 3/8 72 tooth", then after a bit of looking and clicking, I found one that looks the same as mine. OEM tools 22914 has a similar mechanism but fewer teeth. The capri tools kit looks exactly like mine, so I ordered it and hoped the dimensions were the same.
      It doesn't say anywhere that it will work, but I bet there wouldn't be a kit that looks exactly the same but was a different size. I was right.

      Flashing green light means you're close to the right torque, and red means you're at the setting or above it.
