- My Family and Other Animals by Gerald Durrell. Audiobook read by Gerald Harper. Abridged
My Family and Other Animals was published in 1956 and tells of the experiences of a ten-year-old nature enthusiast, i.e., the author himself, as his family leave dreary weather England in 1935 and move to the small Greek island of Corfu. While the story has some exaggeration and embellishment, it is primarily based on young Gerald’s real experiences. Besides audiobook versions, My Family and Other Animals was made into a 10-episode miniseries in 1987 and 2005 film which you can watch on CZcams. Finally, there is a 26-episode series titled The Durrell’s of Corfu which has gotten very good ratings on IMDB and Amazon. It’s currently free on Prime and for a fee on other sites.
Gerald Durrell (1925-1995) was born in India about 370 miles west of Bangladesh. His fascination with nature began in his youth and led to him to write 40 books on the subject. His books have been translated into 30 languages. The royalties helped Mr. Durrell start Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust that has helped protect 435,000 hectares of vital wilderness, save 14 endangered species, and trained 5500 conservationists from 142 countries (Wow). He also founded the Durrell Wildlife Park in 1959, now called Jersey Zoo. It’s located on the English Channel Island of Jersey for which New Jersey is named. Mr. Durrell wanted the zoo to be used for protection and breeding of endangered species. If anyone has visited Jersey Zoo, let us know how you liked it.
Gerald Harper (1929 - all in good time ) is a retired English actor who has primarily performed on stage and British television. He has had small roles on film including the excellent A Night to Remember about the Titanic. A number of his early performances for BBC television have been lost. For example, the 1959 series Skyport, which MS Word thinks I’m misspelling, has only 1 of its 52 episodes remaining. The episode is on CZcams. An intriguing, from its description, 6-episode series from 1964 titled The Sleeper seems to be gone for good. However, you can watch Mr. Harper on CZcams in the role he’s most famous for playing, the titular gentleman detective in Adam Adamant Lives. The main character was frozen by his enemy in 1902 and thawed out in 1966, much to his confusion. An interesting side note is that Mr. Harper hosted a radio show called Gerald Harper’s Sunday Affair in the 1970s where he’d play favorite songs and give away champagne and chocolates. You can find an episode on mixcloud by searching the title. Cheers!
BTW if anyone has any animals encountered in nature stories, let us know! - Zábava
Just wonderful . This book was one of my treasured childhood joys and now to be able to listen to , an albeit , abridged version , read by Gerald Harper ,amounts to sheer delight - thank you so much .
Thank you to narator for perfect reading of a book that had me rolling on the floor as a child. More please🎉
When I was at school (in ancient times), if we finished an exercise or test early, we were allowed to read at our desks. My teacher had to ban me from reading Gerald Durrel and James Herriot books, because I couldn't help bursting into loud laughter while everyone else was trying to work 😂
What a fabulous reader! Sadly he passed away at age 92. Too bad he hadn't read more books for us to listen to.
I loved the mini series, on PBS I believe it was. Ty for this.
The first book I ever read. The second book was the wasp factory by Iain Banks. But this book and its many sequels are pure magic. Also his other books about collecting for his zoo in Jersey are equally brilliant. Have a glorious day you lovely people.❤
.
Thank you. This is marvelous. 🎉
I enjoyed this so much - thank you!
This is for my English literature, me and the other grade 10 in my school both fell asleep on this😂
One of my favourite books 😍
I read this delight as a child. Thank you so much.

Fffgvghtghh
"some people are ... Peculiar"😂😂 oh thank you!
Vido is now a camping ground for kids/scouts! It has a restaurant and a couple of wild beaches. You can get a boat from near the port, no booking. A very wild place still! I was surprised it was mentioned in the book!
Whilst listening to this, I am actually looking at my copy of the book. Regards to all fellow listeners. July, 2023.
Please consider this as a warning. I’ve read this book many times. It is simply the funniest book ever written. Upon my original reading I made the error of reading it on public transport. I am not certain what the other passengers made of my snorts and the tears rolling down my face; suffice to say no one was sitting near me at the end of my trip.
Warnings. Do not read this when wearing make up unless you like a “panda “ eye vibe. Do not read this in public unless you desire to be scrutinized then judged as “odd”. Do not read this whilst drinking any beverage unless you wish to wear part of that beverage and potentially have others wear it too. Do not read this when eating unless you’re willing to risk potentially fatal choking episodes.
… but whatever you do, do read it!
Just to let you know that Ben Ackland has read the full version, chapter by chapter and has put it in his CZcams channel.
So beatiful and amazing experience
So awesome to see this! Is it the whole book? Thank you!
I enjoy your characters!!
Very enjoying to listen but I am the only one who recognised completely chapters are missing?
Thanks for uploading this. I was just wondering, to what extent is this version abridged? I haven’t read the book and don’t really want to miss any good bits from the story! Thanks
These abridged books are usually movie length. So like a good movie, they capture the essence of the movie but there is always more to the story when you read the book. An unabridged version is on audible.com and it comes in at 10 hours 17 min.
@@greatbooksontape782 thanks for the info., really helpful!
This abridged version was very nicely done BUT due to its short length, so much was left out of the delightful story. Still worth a listen.
I enjoyed this very much. Beautifully written and read. Gerald Harper also acted in one episode of "The Caesars", a non-Robert Graves version of the I, Claudius version of history of the first Roman emperors. czcams.com/video/RVBbh-EJ9zk/video.html
