    So now the rules are everyone has to wear a gown and N95 mask, etc correct??
    My work wants me to start assisting with emergency procedures next week (Endo, exo type) and I do NOT have an N95 mask, and there has not been proper discussion of protocol. If I'm not given the proper PPE I will exercise my right to refuse to work without adequate safety equipment.
    I'm trying to research and understand the new system as best I can to be informed and educated.

    • @SmilesDentalGroup

      currently, in Alberta, the standard for PPE is Level 3 mask with face shield, and lab coat or isolation gown. At my clinics, we are wearing KN95 masks, with Level 3 masks over top, with protective eyewear and/or face shields.

    • @liliacastellanos921
      @liliacastellanos921 Před 4 lety

      Yes ! You have to refuse to work without the proper ppe - we seem to be left in the dark as clinicians it’s just a real battle with the government and health officials we are forgotten yet at such a high risk

      I am sorry for your situation. If you are 66 years old, then you are in the high risk group if you should get the SARS2 virus. Do not compromise your PPE. The best or don't do it. Best of health you.

      @SmilesDentalGroup  Před 4 lety

      it is still possible to get K95 (legitimate ones) masks. I think level 3 masks might still be available. in Alberta we can wear lab coats, and there are surgical gown rental services available where they pick up and launder the gowns for you... cost can be as low as 60 cents per gown.

  • @hoho-sl8dr
    @hoho-sl8dr Před 4 lety

    Great video -- however, in doffing of isolation gown, your first hand has to reach inside the gown to doff-outward. Your hand touches the neckline of the gown on the outside, which is contaminated. Stay safe, stay healthy

    • @SmilesDentalGroup
      @SmilesDentalGroup  Před 4 lety +1

      current standards in Alberta give the option of N95 mask + protective eye wear OR level 3 mask + face shield. Protective eye wear can be surgical loupes or glasses with side shields. Good point though! We have since found face shields that fit over top of the loupes, so that works too!

    But there is not enough pppe nevertheless n95 in dental offices in NJ . can we reuse n95 .?

    • @eseskay99
      @eseskay99 Před 4 lety

      You can re-use your fitted N95 if you put in a bag and leave alone for 9 days to play it safe. Some re-use after 5 days. You can also use a UVC sterilizer but I read that the N95 should not be used more than 3 times if you do this because the UVC breaks the fabric down. Also, you should use a surgical mask on top of your fitted N95 if you want to re-use it and also if you have an escape valve like in the video. The mask with an escape valve in front protects the operator but not the patient, so in this case, a surgical mask is definitely needed. Dentistry is one of the dirtiest professions and Sars2 makes it more dangerous now.

    • @SmilesDentalGroup
      @SmilesDentalGroup  Před 4 lety +1

      check with your local guidelines. Health Canada does mention something about reuse of N95s during times of critical shortages.

      slip your thumb inside the shoe cover and roll it off carefully - like a glove. a chair will help do this in a seated position, which is easier.

    Some comments: Thank you for the video as it was informative. The mask you use has an escape valve and that is not acceptable because it does not protect your patients from your exhaled air. At least you put a surgical mask on top to capture your exhaled air. I think a face shield is very necessary- no compromise, but that means the eye loops have to go. For now, you will have to go in without the benefits of loops. You are lucky to be able to use your PPE once and then throw out. I like to remind clinicians that the virus is SARS2, and it is showing to be a multi-system disease. Take your Vitamin D daily as well as lots of Vitamin C and some Zinc. Dentistry must be one of the most dirty jobs around now. The aerosols you professionals are exposed to is enormous when you beat up saliva and blood with your tools. If you compromise on your PPE, the viral load will be extremely high. Very bad. I think Dentists and Hygienist are in an even more dangerous position than ICU Doctor Respirologists intubating patients and they use negative pressure rooms and bio-hazmat suits. I suggests Dentist concentrate on prevention for their patients and use Silver Diamine Fluoride until safer times.

    • @SmilesDentalGroup
      @SmilesDentalGroup  Před 4 lety +2

      Great suggestions! You are correct, the exhaust valve is not acceptable when trying to maintain a sterile field. This is part of the reason why a Level 3 surgical mask is worn over top. The concentration levels of the virus are low in saliva, compared to mucus from the oropharynx or nasal sinus... your comment about Dentists / Hygienists being in a more dangerous position vs. ENTs may not be entirely correct. When treating patients with non-symptomatic carious lesions, silver diamine fluoride is useful. However, in the case of irreversible pulpits, or necrotic pulp, or apical abscess... extraction / RCT are the only real treatment options!
