In this video I return to Inchcape VW Cheltenham to review the new Arteon Shooting Brake. This came about because when I dropped the Golf GTI back last week, I took some pics of this car which were overwhelmingly positive which made a nice change after the s**t storm of Mk8 Golf.
I have a personal interest in this car as I've always like the Arteon since I attended its international launch in June 2017. The new Shooting Brake body style as well as the impending R model make my ownership on an Arteon much more likely than ever now.

You hit the nail on the head there when you said "if Golf 8 had this interior, it might be a lot more popular". Completely agree 👍🏻

Without a doubt, sexiest VDub ever produced. I even like how they updated the interior while retaining the old school DSG shifter. I know thats not a big deal to most, but I havent warmed up to the little stubby shifter lever in the newest Golf. I love the normal Arteon, but i need the wagon in my life. Sadly it will likely never reach North America in that configuration.

I glad that VW has put more time and thought into the Arteon. Back in 2008, I took a chance and picked up a 2009 CC (Arteon’s previous name) with a six speed manual transmission. Aside from some electrical harness issues at 750KMs then at 1500KMs, for a first year model, it was a wonderful drive. The trunk was massive for full size luggage for four and driving it in winter conditions as well as snow storms it was just amazing. Of course I had decent winter Marangoni (first time I had heard of the brand) tire.

I really dig this Arteon estate or estates in general. I’d much rather have an estate than an suv. In the states we have nothing but jelly bean CUVs or boxy SUVS. Red metallic paint with panoramic sun roof would be a great combination.

I'm please you dig it James and concur about Kings Red, they need to start doing black styling packs like Audi. I think Touareg has got it already & they have a lot in common so maybe it's on the way? Spec still seems slightly incomplete as ordering only opened a few weeks ago so hopefully it's in the pipeline

We can rejoice that an estate car has arrived in the face of the tidal wave of horrendous SUV's that pollute the roads. Would love to see how this might look with a two tone paint treatment taking advantage of that muscular body line along the car. Choice of standard paint and interior colours very poor indeed on what ought to be a more flamboyant alternative in the VW range. Will make a great value used purchase in three years time.

I love this car! A video I've very much been looking forward to - when the time comes to replace my 7.5 Golf R Estate, this would probably be top of my list (especially if there's no Golf 8 R estate). A bit more luxurious, whilst still being handsome, practical & fun to drive.
I wonder how the 4motion 280ps would compare to my Golf? Not sure my budget would ever stretch to an Arteon R 🤣.
Much more desirable than the big Audi S/RS Avant's (in my opinion), performance & luxury without the extreme performance & price tag of the big Audi's - better looking too!
Having just played around with the configurator on the VW website, I noticed that those lovely seats are only available if you specify the Nappa leather too (it's an option as well, I think). Also, as you commented on the low road noise, did yours have the Acoustic Pack fitted? Another thing I noticed that if you spec the 20" Rosario wheels (nice!), you're required to select DCC with 20mm lowered sports suspension (probably a good thing) - I wonder how that would drive, compared to the one you tested?
Price I ended up with? North of £46k (also with a full size alloy spare wheel & Harmon Kardon soundpack, to be fair)! Still, cheaper than an A6 Avant (& probably comparable to a higher end A4 Avant) - I'd have the Arteon over both, to be honest!

I'm afraid that VW, worthy as they are as engineers and manufacturers, rarely make a car which looks even vaguely pretty, and the Arteon despite its upmarket pretensions is no exception. Within their own stable, Audi and Skoda make somewhat better looking cars.

Agreed. As a chauffeur, I'd prefer the Superb lift-back, due to it's sedan-like shape. However, in my test drives, I found the Superb was rather noisy - too much road rumble & ambient sound intrusion. When I tried a Passat, it was much better, so I assume the Arteon will be fine too. Unfortunately the lift-back Arteon lacks rear head room, so I'd have to get the estate. (the lift-back shape is more acceptable as a limo). Surprisingly, the Passat also lacked rear head room - I'm 6', and when I rest my head back on the headrest, my head lightly touched the roof, which for my height is unacceptable. Ideally, I'd like an Audi version of the Superb lift-back.

I just think they were hobbled by having to use the same hard points as Golf 7 yet had to make it look different and implement new pedestrian safety regulations. Only A3 managed it successfully and it's still not perfect. In Arteon reskin in 3-4 years could be equally 'marmite' so enjoy while you can!

The car park I film in is nice but light is tricky now, there is a noisy sand and gravel site next door and people from the dealership wander in and ask me what I am doing so just getting a straight review in is hard enough but it's better than being on a roadside as I used to have to do! Totally agree Andrew, always like the look of the Arteon. Not in the market for this size of car but if I was then this would be High on my list.
Probably would be the R.Estate / Shootingbrake. Witha sexy backend

Glad you like it as you are a buyer of Rs and other VWs so are a potential buyer. I guess I am too and it just blew me away which is unusual but refreshing after Golf 8. They just need to make a smaller version and calling it Golf Shooting Brake, identical in and out just 80% of the size!

Tip for future: edit so that you voice over the time spent looking at each bit while looking at it when comparing . You spend 1-2 second with each feature with the camera on it, and then at least as long if not longer looking at the gravel between the cars. Made me stop the video . If you cut and compared back to back images even would be better for comparison.

So refreshing to see your review of a new estate car Andrew. Im getting sick to death of the dearth of SUVs on CZcams (and being produced by manufacturers - and dont even start me in ‘performance’ SUVs 😬) at the moment. The estate car will make a big comeback when the fad for SUVs inevitably passes.

Thank you for highlighting my error and allowing me to clarify that indeed I am sick to death of SUVs, that manufacturers are obsessed by them and that in probably at least 90% of cases are bought more for showing off rather than for actual need 😂

Silly wheels, horrendous looking fake exhausts and a narrow rear lid that’ll fit less in height wise than my mkv gti. A Golf embarrasses all these silly small estate cars, including Volvo and Mercedes.
