Genuine question if I may... Why don't venues have a cap on entry? There seems to be a problem with too many players joining so why not make it first come first served for the entry? Make entries stop at 150 or 200 if the place can only fit 150

Still remember a YCS London where the event was held at comic con. The ticket for the YCS included a free entry to comic con for Friday - Sunday...the YCS entry fee was so much lower that tons of people bought the entry to YCS, bought a single structure deck at the event, registered it, and dropped out instantly to go spend 3 days at comic con for like, 1/3 the price.
I don't think they included it again after that.

This was the usual case for YCS London pre-Covid. It is not included anymore, but nobody knows if it will return, because the first (and only) event after Covid was the 250th YCS in London and this was not during Comic Con. These got absolutely NOTHING on Brazil Nats 2015, there was way more people registered than the venue could hold, so some people had to WAIT FOR A TABLE TO FINISH THE ROUND before starting to play theirs, meaning rounds would go forever, because you had to notify a judge that your round had began so they could starr counting your 40 minutes. Not only that, but the venue was also a game center where they host children's birthdays, so we had to play with the loud sounds and blinking lights of the game booths, with no air conditioning outside of the top tables, that were in a separate room in the back, and the finals ended with one of the players having a seizure and passing out. Just want to mention something regarding YCS London (Head Judge of YCS London here) - we had to start the round, there was no way around it. However, we made sure that nobody was penalized for things that were not their fault. So even if someone at the table got their win due to having no opponent, the opponent waiting in line got a win as well. So nobody should have had an disadvantage for the system failing.

@@nicholasfarrell5981 The incident that comes to mind is a player that was in contention for Top 8 at Dreamhack Atlanta 2022.
They lost their last round and would've finished Top 32 and qualified for the Pro Tour.
However they had several curled foils in their deck and was DQ'd for marked cards after the judges demonstrated they were able to consistently cut to the curled foils, which were key cards to the player's strategy they would want to open.
Of course they feigned innocence but you don't get DQ'd for marked cards in MTG unless the judges think you were actively using them to cheat.
I don't believe this person was a known player and I think they won a very small qualifier (

    • @CanadianPianoMan
      @CanadianPianoMan Před 6 měsíci

@@nicholasfarrell5981 There was an incident at Dreamhack Atlanta 2022 where a player who theoretically would've qualified for the Pro Tour in Top 32 got DQ'd after the last round.
Apparently it was for marked cards because all the copies of one of the key cards in their deck were foil and curled to the point where the judges could consistently cut to them.
Just having marked cards isn't enough in MTG to DQ a player, and the judges have to determine intent. The player knew which cards to which the judges were referring when the deck check occurred though and apparently this was suspicious enough that the player was DQ'd.
As far as I know that player wasn't a known quantity and definitely had not been suspected of cheating in other events.
Dreamhack has also only been something that was added to the competitive MTG schedule in lieu of GPs a couple years ago so there's not a lot of other history to go off of here.
Might be something else but thought I'd mention the major Dreamhack cheating allegations I could think of.

:) Yugi Boomer here so i can only tell stuff from VERY long ago.
Best story imho was when Upperdeck took over the distribution worldwide. This anouncement was made during the German qualifiers. Until then all other Qualifiers were made with cards that were sold in your country (you couldn't play american US cards since they were several sets beyond us). So you played the first few qualifiers with Cards LOB - LON and then ... one week later BOOM play IOC Format. Of course not many did check the internet that frequently so not everybody knew that. (also the Qualifiers were held almost everywhere from a school (literally in a school room or several rooms), to club halls and stuff. One we had in a restaurant :D
And then i don't know which one but it was at a Pharao Tour they had issues with the printer to print the pairings so they couldn't print them. Players had to wait until they got new printer ink (or a new printer don't know excalty... it's some years)

Most heartbreaking story of it came when a mother crying, begging people to find her 8-year old's deck. Someone had stolen it, despite it being an unsleeved starter deck with a couple cheap add-ons. Community came together to build the kid a real deck to make him feel better.

Not a YCS, but I have a low light in the Fall 2018 Garden City Regional at Pandemonium. It's not over the usual suspects: most of the games were fun, the hot dog/sausage stand's food was stellar, and the tournament itself was ran as smooth as ice. The problem was that a group of thieves distracted a card vendor long enough for one of them to smash the glass covering protecting the seller's wares with a giant rock and stole all of their cards. Pandemonium hasn't hosted another Yu-gi-oh regional ever since then, and don't even participate in sneak peaks anymore.

Seating is so close that you literally bump elbows. People are getting yelled at for nonvendor trades in the hallway.
My friend takes post banlist Flunder. They put him at his table but the guy isn't there. Whole round goes by, they give him the win. Turns out the guy was told by a different judge to go to the wrong table and they gave HIM the win too on the other side of the room. The judges decide the best way to fix this is to NOT DO THE NEXT ROUND BY MAKING THEM DO A FULL MATCH. Literally like 90 people watching him play, knowing that this time is literally keeping the entire tourney from going. My friend somehow won (I probably would've forfeit and cried in my car if that were me) but went on to get sideboarded out of every match and drop. Wild shit.

The only regional i went to had 300 people stuck in a conference room in a hotel. Outside it was like 36 degrees °F and inside of the venue it was like 90 degrees with the quantity of people. Nearly lost a game in round 5 because there were 2 entrances to the place and my table was 1 feet from on of them and took the other entrance. Had to dive against the human wave entering the place to sit. Only for it having so many people crammed in the table that in practice, we had to play with only 4 zones instead of 5. Ended up drawing beacuse of the 5 minutes i lost struggling to reach my seat. And to end it all, it was 9 rounds straight without pause, because they started late. So no food.

Regional at CoolStuff games in FL a year or so ago. Heat was out so they had 2 or 3 industrial fans running, started about an hour and a half late, I didn't have a chair for the first 5 minutes of round one (i was literallt standing and playing), and i couldnt draw a single level 2 monster for spright 4 games in a row. It was a time to be alive

Small regional in like 2010. Only 80ish people but we were all crammed into a hot brick room in the middle of summer with no AC and ONE fan. Oh and they screwed up pairings for round 1 multiple times. Room stank to high hell though not the fault of the players themselves obviously

There was a regional hosted by a new locals in the Philly area that broke off from another well known locals. Owner's a total clown. The regional was hosted in the LGS and hit 250 people. People were packed so tightly into their seats that it caused a fire hazard where no one could pass by if you were in the back, There's a video of me being on the wrong side of the table and being squished in further, so rather than going back through the walkway I climb over the table to the other side LMAO. Also my opponent (regular at my locals btw) tried to shark me Game 2 because we forgot a mandatory Arise Heart, then I died to King Tiger Whangu stun in Round 3. Absolute garbage

for me back in the day it was at a actual locals before they decided they needed a convention center over fire capacity every time to where they even had to have players play on tables outside to where if it wasnt the az heat if you got one gust of wind in your direction your deck was probably as good as gone and for the people that played in doors their was no ac what so ever (again while in az as well) and the locals in question only had one toilet inside to where the bathroom not only had lines waiting all the way outside but the room for the bathroom itself was the literal size of you being shoved in a locker and on the off chance if that wasnt enough sometimes their would be plumbing trouble to where the toilet would literally explode otherwise is just thankful we have convention centers now to have regionals as is and is just glad this is no longer the case but if i had to add one more thing to this i literally got heat sickness because of their being no ac as even drinking water in that oven was not enough to keep anyone well enough to not get heat sickness and if you want to go a step further the store owners did have a fan but they only had it pointing in their direction aka behind the counter so while the rest of us suffered they at least were able to cool off themselves so uhm ye....

That San Antonio one. I Know the place. I never went to a San Antonio regional again because that shop always ran it and the venue was always that. Middle School tables and imagine sitting squished between two dudes that either hasn't taken a shower that week or WEED.
I ended up dropping around round 4 or 5 because the chinese food I bought from next door made me sick as hell.

So I just recently started going to competitive events and both of my experiences were in Indy. Neither were bad but both had what seem like odd issues to me. At the YCS I found out that my Konami ID on neuron was just wrong so I had to have a hand written note by a judge with my actual ID because “there’s no way to change the one neuron without having to redo all of your stuff”. Then at the regional last year I had shown up early only to find the location of the event had been changed with no notice as the room we were all told to be in was a special fan party area for the Iowa Hawkeyes foot ball team.

Gotta say for me it was YCS Mendenhall where the game shop was completely packed with people and there was no AC on the hottest day that year. My blackwings at the time were not up to snuff since I had no new support nor Orcust to throw in since it was one of the top contenders for the format, but Mystic Mine was available so I tried Weatheries. Kinda hurt when the first deck I faced was Blackwing Orcust, followed by Orcust Mekk-Knight, then Crusadia, all under Master Rule 4. The only good thing, got the entire Kosmo deck for about 10 bucks or so at the time. Team APS's video on it was VERY accurate.

dire's editing of the intro gag this episode could've been better. Plus missed opportunity with not doing "Created by Alex Cimoooooo"

Also the MBT looks kinda sloppily added ontop of the gravity falls logo and you can see the original underneath.

It might be good (even if not helpful) to write a list of things Yu-Gi-Oh! players expect at an event, both do's and don't's. So that whoever hosts these events can crossreference the list later and maybe make the events more bearable. But listening to these stories just doesn't make me want to waste money on attending them. It just doesn't sound like fun.

Regionals in a nearby city. First one i'd ever been to. The problem wasn't the tournament itself that was run very well, the problem was that for me to get there it was a 2 hour train ride, 10 minute walk out of the massive train station, 15 min on the bus and then another 10 minute walk. I left at like 6 AM and didn't come back till near 7pm, and none of the locals crowd had any space in their cars, plus they were dropping if they started losing. Why do people even bother showing up if all they want to do is win? It's supposed to be fun.
