- This is only my second video I've ever made, so I had to put quite some effort in making it. Also, my converter put an ad at the top of the video and it ruined some effects a bit. :/ But, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out!
Anyway, for the ones who are wondering what this is all about, this is a tribute to the coolest character in history, Bro Strider. Some people might not know who this is, so let me explain what Homestuck is.
Homestuck is a webcomic made by a man named Andrew Hussie. It's about 4 kids who chat with each other over a chat client and decide to play a game together. Boring? NO! This game causes AND is their way out of the apocalypse of Earth. They get into the game and each get their own planet in a universe called the Incipisphere. Their goal is to defeat a black king and queen of a race called Dersites. But on their way, they're faced with loads of problems. That's the basic description for ya.
Bro Strider is the brother of one of the 4 kids (the one you see in the beginning of the video) and does loads of cool stuff you can see in the video. The villain he fights at the end of the video is called Jack Noir. He rose to power by defeating the Black King and Queen himself (in the normal games, that wouldn't happen) causing himself to be a super overlord.
I only took pieces from the flashes Bro featured in except for the last picture to show Bro's biggest moments in the comic.
And yes, I'm aware I cut out the meteor being split by Bro, but that was intentional because I couldn't make a good transition otherwise.
Anyway, all of this aside...

No you're right. Caliborn wanted to break one of the Beta Kid's spirit so that he wouldn't have much opposition in his retconned timeline and Dave was the unlucky pick. Since Lil Cal housed his soul and all :T I mean that's where Lil Cal's namesake, Caliborn.

Yeah. I think the reason you don't notice the first time around is because you already have to suspend your disbelief so much just to accept the premise of Homestuck. Right from the beginning you're shown things like Capchalogs that make no sense and are never explained but the character's act like it's normal so you stop questioning it. By the time you get to see Bro you've learned that this world works on different rules and since Dave thinks that his situation is normal so do we.

Despite the negative interpretation of the relationship the comic conveyed later in the story, Bro probably still really loved Dave in his own way and that strife was one last test to keep Dave on his toes before he had to face and burden the most cataclysmic sequence of events and responsibilities in his life. And perhaps even a sort of farewell as it's their last interaction.
Especially when you take into consideration how Dirk treated his friends as well. He tried to toughen up Jake constantly with beatings from and undefeatable robot.
It’s heavily implied that the original narrative of bro’s actions was him knowing sburb was on the cusp and because he’s literally adult dirk, his only proper way of protecting dave in his eyes was making him strong enough so doesnt have to worry about him. Yea Its fucked up but bro is a flawed anti-hero, with the philosophy of “The Path of hell was paved with good Intentions.”
@@presidentofthegalaxy784 I think their relationship being retconned to be outright abusive kind of jumped the shark. Considering John attacking his dad with a hammer over some mail was also treated as a completely mundane occurrence, Bro attacking Dave with swords just felt like the exaggerated Homestuck equivalent of sibling roughhousing/an older brother kicking their sibling's ass at a game.
Not to imply he ever seemed like a particularly nice guy or anything. Early on it seemed more like their dynamic was going to be that of a younger sibling who idolized his older brother, and excused his shitty behavior as just being what "cool guys" do. I think Dave slowly realizing his brother was actually kind of a jerk/not as cool as he thought he was would've basically facilitated the same character arc for him anyway (As well as mirrored John's realizations about his father), so I always felt it was a bit dumb that they made it SO extreme. "Revealing" that Dave was actually living in fear of a genuine lunatic all his life just felt like a lazy way to invent drama for him and Dirk to hash out.
@Sweld549 i would almost agree, but remember. The apartment dave was in had no place to keep food. Kid was stashing stuff in his closet just to ensure he has some shit to drink and eat. Fridge was jammed with weapons, cooking utensils stuffed full of puppets, he was not having a good time with his "bro"
@@Roguerobin4 By normal standards, sure. However by normal standards pretty much everything the kids' guardians did would be considered pretty psychopathic. If John's dad doing unhinged stuff like plastering clowns all over his house or mass-producing cakes to force on his son is accepted as the goofy Homestuck equivalent to a dad's clumsy attempts to bond with his son, then it would make sense that Dave's bro is just a stereotypical deadbeat older sibling taken to a cartoonish extreme. In that context "There's no food in the fridge because its full of swords" reads less as "Dave is literally fighting to even feed himself" and more like "Bro's the type of asshole who'd go out and buy an armful of lunchables after Dave complained about them not having groceries".
Basically I'm saying it's odd that the other guardians' crazier actions are handwaved as being an almost non-literal abstractions of normal behavior, but then suddenly everything Dave's bro did is treated as having been strictly literal with all the terrible implications that entails. It felt very jarring considering how much of those kind of elements are, by Hussie's own admission, written with the intention of being tongue in-cheek and not entirely representative of what's "actually" happening.
During the fight between jackdog, dirk, and davesprite, I really wanted dirk to look to davesprite's mastery of swordsmanship, his speed and power, and say:
"Bro. I'm unironically proud of you"
just, a little bit of redemption? something? anything to make his relationship with scratch-dirk healthier

At first, bro seemed like the coolest guy ever, I mean he literally split a meteor in half with a SWORD.
But now that I've finished reading Homestuck, I realized that bro wasn't really as cool as we all thought. I feel most of it, however, wasn't entirely Bro's fault. As we see in the alpha timeline, dirk still isn't really the best out of them, (all of them have their problems). However, I think it was partly Lil' Cal's doing for why Bro was so abusive to dave. I mean, literally, it was part of Caliborn (who becomes Lord English) is inside Cal. and John giving Cal (or at least the dream one) to Bro when he creates them with ectobiology stuff means that he's had it all his life. That probably would mess someone up, having the soul of the evilest thing in the multiverse with you since birth.
If I got anything wrong, *_please_* correct me so we can have a more accurate discussion. If you have anything to add, say it. just, please be kind and respectful when you say it.
Yknow, realizing that Bro grew up with basically the souls of Caliborn, Gamzee, and to a lesser extent, Dirk (ARquius) makes Bro make a lot of sense
Assuming that the Cal Bro was given was already the 'cursed" one, it seems more of a miracle that bro didnt turn into a genocidal maniac
wouldn't Bro's shades protect against the puppet's influence? like if they're both wearing shades and Dave isn't showing signs of malevolence, I think something else could be at play. remember when Dirk said he could see how somebody like Bro could happen if Dirk were allowed to grow unchecked by outside sources (Dirk had his friend), Bro had nobody. Just himself, that puppet, some swords and a shitload of time before Dave arrives.

I love how people still think everyone was happy at the beginning of homestuck. Dave wasn't. And not just because of his stoic demeanor, this kid was SUFFERING. There has always been pain in homestuck, whether blood was visible or not.

That's the greatest question of this all, isn't it?
Is Bro in the right for doing this to Dave, in the end? Is he doing this for some sick pleasure, or because he believes it is the right thing to do? Does he believe that Dave has a problem with escaping from conflicts that he can't avoid, or for learning about his place? I believe that Bro's character still did everything he did specifically for Dave. To him, Dave was his younger brother. He was the kid he needed to protect, even if that meant that he was sometimes harsh or even brutal to him. When he meets up with Davesprite, they resolve to fight Bec Noir together, even with the knowledge that they can only fight on equal footing. Perhaps Bro truly is abusive. But is that all there is to his character? Was Vriska running Tavros through all their was to her? (Speaking of abusive relationships....)
I am the eldest brother of three boys. I helped my mom to raise the other two of them. Would I ever beat the ever living crap out of them with a sword and my elbows? No, I would not. But you know what I would do? I would make them realize that there is more to life then seeing things as we want to see them. I protect them, in many ways. Sometimes my ways are wrong. Sometimes I don't understand them. Sometimes they treat me wrongly as well. However, for all that, if I could teach them to have passion towards valuable things, to encourage them to stride towards something greater.. At the end of the day, Dave still wields a sword. He still finds Bro's dead body. He still wields Caldefwelch. And more than anything else, he knows he will never be the man his brother is. There are parts of me that I hope my brothers never adopt. Such is life.

There are probably parts of Dirks nature that care for Dave and try to be supportive (doesn't Bro sleep on the couch while Dave has a bedroom?) Bro is easily one of the greatest supporting characters I've seen in media. His incredible strength, abilities, and amazing amount of respect and honor is astounding to say the least. Dave had a great guardian to teach him, and it shows flawlessly in his battle and character development.

I like to think this was a fight to see if Dave was ready for what was in store in the Medium, it makes sense if you think about it, roughing Dave up would toughen him up for the things that happen later on down the line, including against Jack.
i think there were a few reasons as to why Bro raised Dave like this. Lil Cal being one of them, Sburb being another, and Lord English being a really big one.

But nah, Bro is awesome. I mean he litteratly saves Dave's ass (After kicking it) several times. Without him, neither Dave, nor Rose would have survived. And by that extension neither would have John, with the Pch00000ing to the denizen bullshit from Terezi, so then Jade wouldn't have survived. Bro just saved the alpha timeline. That's really all there is to say on the matter.

I always had mixed feelings about Bro. He was a dick no getting around that, I saw it from the beginning. But I liked him as a character, and got upset when he died. Like when the villain gets defeated, but they were a really good villain.
The thing with Bro is, is that I feel like he never actually was a person for the most part.
A ghost of Dirks traits are there, but with possessed call being with him since day 1, homeboy never even got a chance to develop into an actual person instead of a shell of one.
Things normal people experience like growth and worldview were likely incredibly sabotaged by this outside force. People are shaped by their nature as well as their nurture, and while I can see things from Dirks nature in him, any shaping that nurture would do with normal people is instead fully taken up by Lil Cals influence, causing Bro to be missing a pretty key aspect in what makes a person.
With how deeply rooted Cal probably was in his brain, I'm glad he's dead.
Not just for Dave's sake, but for his own, since there was never a chance for him to actually be a person in this timeline, being steered into a very clear direction since birth with a mind that's only partially his own, only in nature and not at all in nurture.
Also glad that he's dead so more focus could go to villainous characters who are very much their own people, with nurtures to explore that are more interesting since their reactions and growth based on it are far more natural. Villiany is imo more fun if the characters grew more naturally into their role as villians with their nature reacting to their nurture, rather than them probably being completely from day 1.

It's kinda sad that (theorized by dave) bro only raised dave as some sort of ultimate expression of psychopathic irony. I like to believe Dave was right in (again theorizing) that owning lil cal for so long drove bro insane (like a Harry Potter horcrux, which the comic references alot)
im not gonna say Bro was in the right, but he did what he could, of what he know he could do, he still choose to save dave, and even die for him.
I feel like he did love Dave, but 30 years of puppet brainrot severely fucked with his morality and with what he conciders normal, acceptable behaviour.
Some parts of Dirk would have been inevitable, like emotiobal distance etc, but having the most evil doll in the multiverse radiate bad juju onto him since 'birth' multiplied any negative traits in his nature by 1000.

On top of that, bro seems to have some behaviours and interests that aren't natural to Dirk AT ALL, but are very much to Caliborn, like the Saw deathtrap stuff and weird p@rn.
Actions like letting Dave have the bedroom while Bro sleeps on the couch feel like some parts of the Dirk inside him actually showing his care for Dave, but bc of the situation anything this dude does is gonna be heavily compromised.
He was never gonna be a good guardian, but without the puppet in the way like Mom, Grandpa and even Dad were incredibly flawed.
I think it's in Dirks nature to be highly self-critical, so had his perspective had a chance to be more normal he probably would've been a LOT more careful and less violent and overall better at keeping his traits in check, if not still emotionally distant.
I feel like he would've been a worse guardian than Mom but a better one than Grandpa.

Guys, none of you bat an eyelid when you saw the "abuse" earlier in homestuck. BECAUSE ITS HOMESTUCK. John doesn't even know what putting something down is. All the kids didnt have names into their thirteenth birthday, because its a world designed to be funny and cool, not realistic.
that doesn't mean it can't have realistic themes, and dave's abuse was very much realistic. even if homestuck is mostly comedic, it goes into pretty deep ideas.

I've actually got a lil fanon theory that this isn't Dirk we're seeing raising Dave, but Lil Hal. Without the friends in the alpha timeline to show him how much of an asshole he was, he continued down the path of self-obsession and over efficiency. He's had those Lil Hal glasses on for so long he basically became the emotionless AI he created, losing any sense of empathy and only caring about making Dave stronger regardless of how much he was abusing the kid.

I've considered Bro as an alternate version of Hal moreso than Dirk.

In Hal you can clearly see parts of Dirk, however, due to the nature of being an AI, certain things of human nature like morality do just not transfer and are absent.
Likewise, due to Bro being infected with bad juju since birth, he does not have certain things that most humans have. His morality is probably severely compromised, as is any chance at personal growth in life.
Instead of the limitations of being an AI, it's the limitations that the puppet has caused in Bro.
Bro and Hal are what happens when you take 90% of Dirks nature, and fill the other 10% up with either robo shit or Caliborns nature, as well as having their nuture and development be very compromised in one way or another.
In ways AR actually had more freedom to develop as his own person than Bro did, ngl.

Form This Way Dave was prepared for the game because constantly fighting someone you can't beat helps you be able to fight against opponents that are less powerful. The adults are hinted in many places to know about the game. Bro did what he did so that Dave could defend himself. Bro never took it too far, just up to the point where Dave could be considered 'defeated' in honorable and open combat.
This was a fight between unequal combatants for training purposes, not abuse.
Chameleonred5 It doesn't excuse his behavior. If John, incapable of wielding a sledgehammer in the beginning, was able to get through the game and end up the most powerful of everybody, then Dave didn't need it.
