I am not Korean, so I can’t speak for them. But from an objective perspective, I think one of the best things Japan can do is teach their citizens the whole Japanese empirical history. Japanese don’t need to feel ashamed of being Japanese but they should at least fully understand how their nation has affected others in the past. I think understanding, though it may not be a solution, is at least a step in the right direction.

As you know Italy supported Germany and back in the days they did horrible things (horrible isn't even enough to describe it) but in school we learnt about every single details of it, there are a lot of project where we met people that survived to Auschwitz and other places like that. So I think that education is very useful to do not repeat the same mistakes, they don't need to feel ashamed.

Same for the woman not wanting to get married or have kids but japanase people blame it on society, instead of trying to solve the problem they just blame another factor and keep living they are 100 percent right.

We can only know about it through the internet. North Vietnamese know nothing about the South Korean War crime, but South Vietnamese does. Fact all the war crimes is happened in South Vietnam and to the South Vietnamese civilians. U.S pay South Korean money to protested the South border and the South Vietnamese people, and to kill NVA and Việt Minh, but instead South Korean came to South Vietnamese village, then killing and rapping everyone.

I would have to agree that the world would be a better place if we can focus more on a prosperous future together and let old wounds heal. If we go back in history far enough, the people of Korea and Japan are not that far apart. We are in many aspects related cousins.

It isn’t even only past racism/colonialism that Japanese are responsible for. Disregarding past atrocities like Unit 731, Sado Gold mine complex, they still think of Koreans as inferior subhumans with examples like: Manga Kenkanryu. Racist anti-korean literature dominates Japanese bookstores and racist anti-Korean protests are commonplace: so when a certain ethnicity hates you that much, its only naturally to be wary of them. Historically they’ve always wanted to rape and pillage us just look at the Imjin War. But Koreans need to bring more recent racism to light so others realize that Japan never stopped being racist and backwards.

Most because they weren't taught, others as that old man who prefers to close their eyes and accuse other countries of their wrongdoings too. He seemed like a kid honestly.
I am truly shocked. The japanese government and media is completely at fault, I've searched more for it, and they've actually distorting their history in their history books at school. That's why young generations are completely clueless. I was quite even astonished that young girl knew about the comfort women, but as she explained it's because she saw a woman protest and learned about it.

The important thing is that the conversation is going on and that people are trying to address, and if at all possible, resolve or mend such an issue. The problem is is cannot truly be part of history until it goes from the hearts of people into their minds. Which, with that said, we're human: so there's a long road ahead.

Japan: Power of Facebook -- Comfort Women Narrative Crumbling bit by bit
The Wall Street Journal and others now are picking up reality about the Comfort Women issue, straight from my interviews and from this Facebook page. Until just weeks ago, there was never mention of the 2007 IWG report. Team members I was working with independently found the buried IWG report in the US National Archives, and they provided it to me. We studied it in detail, and weeks ago released its existence:
      Now it is breaking open:
"Primary source information was also missing from the article regarding the facts behind the issue. Instead, the article simply regurgitated what others have claimed about the comfort women.
"The only evidence that the article provided to back up the narrative of forced prostitution was the words of the alleged, former comfort women. The author failed to submit any additional primary source materials. Earlier this year, the Asahi Shimbun apologized for reporting as fact without performing any background checks Seiji Yoshida’s discredited claims that he “forced comfort women into enslavement”. Perhaps the New York Times hasn’t yet learned the folly of reporting without due diligence.
"What the New York Times article failed to mention was primary source information, such as the Interagency Working Group’s (IWG) report on Nazi and Japanese war crimes, which it submitted to Congress in 2007. After spending 30 million dollars to go through over 8.5 million newly declassified documents, opened to the public under the Nazi War Crimes Disclosure Act and the Japanese Imperial Government Disclosure Act, the IWG was unable to find any evidence that gave credence to the claims of forced prostitution by the Japanese government or military. In fact, the report goes on to give an apology to the special interest groups who were eagerly looking forward to such evidence.
"Furthermore, “Report 49″ provided by the United States Office of War Information (OWI) in 1944 described the interview of 20 captured Korean comfort women. The report clearly identified them as paid prostitutes instead of sex slaves, and went onto describe how they participated “in sports events with both officers and men, and attended picnics, entertainments, and social dinners”.
The primary source documents clearly noted that the comfort women were highly paid prostitutes.
"Interestingly, a group of South Korean women recently sued their government saying that U.S. forces in South Korea treated them as comfort women. While the U.S. media immediately responded by saying that they were prostitutes, those same media outlets have continued to refer to those comfort women, who had served the Japanese military, as sex slaves.
"Both Japanese and U.S. military bases, during their respective times, had “comfort stations” where men paid for sex with prostitutes. But curiously enough, those same prostitutes became “sex slaves” in name when served the Japanese military.
"Perhaps it’s time for both the Japanese and Western media to return to primary source research and to deliver the real story." Michael Yon

I am a Japanese Korean. Regardless, I find it hard to label myself as Japanese. I was primarily raised in Korean culture by my mom, who was fully Korean. My parents were divorced so I rarely saw my dad. Considering myself a Korean, I never had a bad experience with Japanese people. I think one of the greatest issues that stem from today's world is that we use others' opinions to cloud our judgments too easily. I want to add that this is a common and inevitable mistake. Thus, I believe understanding history from both sides is crucial to forming an unbiased and objective opinion on this issue. Personally, I think it's important not to discredit what Koreans have been through. However, we shouldn't be locked in a "jail" called history. Ultimately, history repeats itself. For that reason, instead of using this colonization to justify the innate hatred both countries have toward each other. Both should use history as a tool to help innovate and create a better future where there will be amples of mutual gains and successes. This would not only provide benefits socially but also economically. Japan has been one of Korea's greatest trading partners for a multitude of history; therefore it would only be a gain for other economic aspects if both countries started accepting each other. I still find it necessary to argue that this doesn't mean we should forget history. As the man in the video said, history is something we have to live with. Being able to grow from history is the hardest part. Nevertheless, I believe it's possible for both countries to grow from this. I doubt this growth will happen any time soon; both countries still have a rocky relationship with each other, but I hope it happens in the future.
A complimentary issue I want to touch on is the matter of "comfort woman." In Korea, I was taught that Japan was the ONLY country that used women for their personal satisfaction and entertainment. I think this example shows that both countries have labeled and manipulated history in a way to patronize their country while shining a negative light on one another. Therefore, I am incapable of classifying Japan as the only country that hasn't educated its citizens about the true history of Japanese colonization objectively and factually. I am certain that both countries would obviously hide or degrade the severity of the issues they have committed in the past.
Being totally objective about this issue, this is my opinion as a Korean. Although many might argue that I'm only raising this point because I am Japanese. I want to reinstate that I have never grown up under Japanese culture/influence so I consider myself a Korean.
Btw: there might be factual errors in historical information. Please correct me and understand I am not fully educated about this issue :)

I'm going to be honest. I do feel slightly annoyed at the lack of knowledge regarding this issue. I think the tension wouldn't be as bad if the Japanese were more aware of what their country did. The ignorance of the wrongdoings of their country is frustrating. The countries who were affected by Germany during WW1 and WW2 don't point any fingers at them because they have shown tremendous growth and reflection while this looks to me, like they're just trying to bury it. First of all: Thank you! It was a very good and informative video! My heart was really pounding as I saw this video.
One week ago I came back from a trip to Korea, where I came to see a lot and also meet a lot of people. I also lived in Japan for one year and it has become a second home for me during that time. I have both friends in Korea and Japan that I love dearly and I hope I never have to take a side which country I like more. I was literally trembling because this is such a sensitive topic.
Growing up as a German I learned about the second Worldwar in every class in every single year of my school years and for many years I hated myself for being German. There is no excuse for the things that Germany and also Japan have done in the last century. As you said the victims remember history very vividly. So as the children of this country the least that we can do is remember what we would rather like to forget. And that is also what I want to encourage Japanese people to do. Learn about the history of our peoples. That is a sign of respect to those countries still remembering their victims. And it will make real conversations possible.
I studied history until I wanted to throw up. I pray that there will be no more wars because in a war there are no victors, there are only losers. I hope that you know that I never went easy on myself. Please forgive us. Please let go of the prejudices that you have against us. I won't forget the past so that you can let go of the burden. Please let us not define our future by the past of those who lived before us. Please let us define our future by the love we share today.

Don't listen to big Willie here tho,
If you want to hate yourself, i'm sure you can come up with much better reasons than being born in a country with some bad history and a vegan/genocidal dictator.
Take a step back and think about what the Germans did, and put it in perspective. First of all, a huge number of people have been doing insanely evil things pretty much everywhere nearly all the time so you are not nearly as unique in evilness as you'd think from what people think. Stalin for example was a much more efficient mass murderer than Hitler but do you see russians hating themselves for it? No. How about Cambodians? The Rwandans? That genocide happened just a couple of decades ago and they probably don't even make a big fuss about it anymore. Why should the Germans be hating themselves after 80 years after the facts? What about the Turkish? They killed off all the Armenians just 100 years ago and almost no one who is Turkish cares about it. Put it in perspective.
Just look at our species for example. We most likely have obliterated all other human species that have ever existed.
Forget racial genocide, thats childsplay, compared to what we have already done as a species.
Denisova hominin, Homo floresiensis, Homo naledi, Homo erectus and the Neanderthals and that's just from our genus. All DEAD and EXTINCT species of our own family tree, the nearest thing we have genetically on this planet to us and we slaughtered them all without mercy.
Also around 50% OF ALL large mammals were wiped out by us about ten thousand years ago when we invaded the Americas through Siberia. They had freaking camels there.
And not to mention what we are doing right now. We are likely the main culprit to the sixth extinction event of our planet and also ironically the only thing that can prevent it.
See, If you look at humans from this perspective, we are all the same and already guilty of the worst crimes possible.
But at the same time we are not, even if our ancestors and older generations are.

The issues Koreans have with Japanese aren’t solely from colonization, though a lot has to do with that as well, but the fact that there’s over 500+ years of a lack of acknowledgment of their wrongdoings and a lack of crediting what is and isn’t theirs.

  • @yjjy1401

we learn Korean history since primary school, and Korean literature + history covers about 6 hours' worth of lessons a day at school. Japanese history only covers less than 5% of our textbooks, while Chinese history covers up 30% and Western history about 10%. Korea's patriotism is deep-rooted in its history, which like the earliest founded dynasty by the Chinese, dates far back to around 4 BCE. I implied this weight because their knowledge about their country's history positively reflects on their involvement and opinion in politics. On the other hand, the Japanese people seem to have a more shallow understanding of their history, which also makes them laid-back in their attitude towards the current situation. Therefore, I think it's fair to say that the Japanese people's opinion on this is more accurate than the tension their politicians have created from not wanting to apologize. I'm personally 100% pro-Korea, but I also think it quite unfair that Koreans have to put Japan under the spot (especially where the people most affected are young people who've had nothing to do with the past). However, I hope that you understand and acknowledge the effort and pride any persons have sacrificed to build their nation, and thus us Koreans' history is a sensitive topic

However, China has influenced Korea for thousands of years, so it is natural that China appears in Korean history textbooks.
Contents such as the Goguryeo-Su War, the Ming Dynasty's support during the Imjin War (万历朝鲜之役 in Chinese), the Goryeo-Khitan War, the Qing invasion of Joseon, and the participation of Chinese troops in the Korean War are treated as important.
However, many people know the stories, such as the Three Kingdoms and the 楚漢戰爭, because they are also cartoonized for young students to see (I'm 25, and now Korean teenagers rarely read books, so they may not)

I’m Japanese. I noticed many people are writing how children in Japan don’t learn the history so I wanted to write my opinion here. While Japanese textbooks downplay some of the events that happened during the imperial time, I don’t think the content was “whitewashing” nor pro-Japanese. It covers key events with a fairly neutral tone. If anything, we were told this was something we should be strongly ashamed of. Our teacher also showed us a graphic documentary made by NHK, that filmed atrocities committed by the Japanese army in Asia.
I can’t speak of other people, because the content of textbooks slightly differ depending on the publisher. But all I’m saying is, we do learn the horrific events happened, including Nanking massacre, Crackdowns on Koreans during March 1st, Korean massacres during Great Kant Earthquakes, the controversies surrounding the comfort women to name just a few. That said, I think we should make more efforts to let the students think more about the history of colonial era with more details, especially the time when Japan aggressively expanded into the Asia Pacific regions and caused a significant damage to the local people. I’m not proud of the war crimes committed during the war, and I’m not nationalist at all. I strongly believe those who suffered need recognization and appropriate compensations. But I do hope people would at least make some efforts to actually look into what we learn at school before making an assumption.

Meanwhile in America, there are groups who have a equally disturbing background (if not more) while to this day suffer in the most direct ways for the very same reasons of those yesterday. Which makes matters worse is the fact that independence has never been practiced as much as it’s been spoken of, so these groups not only have not healed from their past, but as a greater consequence, suffers in addiction from the new issues on top of the old.

I’m kinda wondering how do we study from objective perspective? I don’t think everything on Japanese’ text books are right, but i can say same things from the U.S and Korea neither. We both learn the history from subjective perspective. I just tried and look at these issues from objective perspective, but it was impossible. Did Korean media show how much money Japan paid after WW2 and why Japan made a decision to restrict export to Korea? Did Japanese government do nothing to comfort women including Taiwan, China, Korea , Philippines and Indonesia?
Learning from history does not make it be realistic, because it depends on country’s educations. But what Japanese’s government had done to these countries after WW2 were be left as facts.

Thank you, Hiroko and Asian Boss, for covering this story. I could see that one of the gentlemen being interviewed did not seem too comfortable. I can imagine how many people said no to Hiroko for an interview.
Where I was educated, the history books covered the Japanese occupation of many Asian countries which included what happened in Korea with comfort women. Years ago, when I told that such history was not taught to the young generation in Japan, I was somewhat surprised but then again also not shocked because many countries practice revisionist history or they simply don’t talk about it in detail.
I think an apology was helpful to acknowledge what happened but I think money won’t cover it. I’m guessing that the perpetrators either went to jail for war crimes and if they didn’t, they probably already passed away. It’s likely that no direct punishment can be achieved. I think it boils down to acknowledgment and sincerity. That can be demonstrated by including the victims’ accounts in history lessons. It should not be swept under the rug. Young people should be able to remember these lessons. Future generations need to be told what exactly happened so it doesn’t happen again. I would also say that the same thing should happen within Korea if they also did similar things in Vietnam. We should not be afraid of the past because it will teach us the sins of our forefathers and we can learn from them to become a better generation.
PS: Thanks for sharing the stats, Steve. I think that paints a clearer context of what we are watching. 🙏👍

Yes, many countries practice revisionism. I'm forever grateful to Germany for owning up to its past and apologizing at each opportunity, so it seems they are past that era now. But Japan put off apologizing, did too little too late, and now there are news reports that part of the Japanese government is bringing back the war crimes trials for a "review" (like they want to change the past now, pardon their war criminals?) In light of government denials of wrongdoing, as well as leaving dirty details out of its textbooks, this smells suspiciously like trying to sweep the past under the rug, hoping people will forget.

The more they do that, the more they ensure people remember and continue to hate Japan and bring up the past. Who now brings up in any kind of serious way that the Germany of today is anything like Nazi Germany? That's because Germany was humble and continue to make serious international and domestic efforts to acknowledge what happened and take steps to prevent it happening again. Unfortunately, the Japanese people are too proud. Sometimes that is a good thing, but MOST of the time it is better to be humble.

Pro File simply you can't accuse someone who used paid prostitution service of having raped prostitutes. That's the problem. We should be based on the provable facts if we really want to learn something from the history. You don't understand why we hesitate to apologize. For example, 200,000 women were raped and killed? Where is the evidence? Where are their bodies? Who were they? Why should we accept such a lie and apologize? How could it helpful in pursuing the world peace. I don't think Korean people really want to learn from the history. What a pity. Their propaganda and ignorance are preventing us from looking at the history as it is to see where the real problems and errors were. Our errors and their errors.
