    I fell in love with Ida Lupino the first time I saw her in High Sierra with Humphrey Bogart - such a tough but vulnerable character. I didn't know how many TV shows she directed episodes of until recently - The Donna Reed Show, 77 Sunset Strip, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Have Gun Will Travel, Thriller, The Fugitive, Dr. Kildare, The Twilight Zone, and Bewitched. She is the only woman to have directed an episode of the original Twilight Zone and star in one as well. Thanks for the sauce PizzaFlix!

    Loved it. Ida Lupino made this just after her production company, which produced such classics as The Hitchhiker and Not Wanted, went bust. The studio made it clear that her directorial skills, along with her social justice themes, were not wanted. They only wanted her as an actress. She went along, but eventually got to direct many TV episodes and films in the 1950s and 1960s.
    This TV film was short but packed a huge punch. It was a worthy forerunner to the Hammer House of Horror, the Twilight Zone and others.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 Před 5 lety +5

      The director, Roy Kellino, was the first husband of James Mason's wife Pamela. The three had worked together in England before the war. Like Ida Lupino, Pamela Mason remolded herself into an American.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 Před 4 lety +4

      @lana lake Didn't know that, thanks. Mason was a fascinating fellow who has never been properly written up. He was a top student at Cambridge University (architecture) who got the acting bug and went full Hollywood, but never lost touch with his Yorkshire roots and played some northern English characters (e.g. 'Spring and Port Wine') as well as domineering millionaires as he aged. He could do rich or poor, Brit or American. Perhaps his versatility limited his renown- lazy critics tend to praise stars who have one image and stick to it.
      Mason always liked to walk the hero-villain line: from his UK days as the glowering matinee idol you loved to hate through to 'Dr Fischer and the Bomb Party'. He could play the vulnerable ordinary guy, e,.g. in 'Bigger Than Life', and was wonderful as Brutus in 'Julius Caesar' amid the big theater names, but was a scene-stealer as a black hat. For my money he purloins 'North by North West; from Cary when he shows up at the denouement, just as he beat Brando in 'Caesar'.
      When the aged DW Griffith first saw JM he said 'That Mason is the greatest actor'.

    • @esmeephillips5888
      @esmeephillips5888 Před 4 lety +2

      @lana lake Fun fact: Mason's ex, Pamela Kellino, is one of the panelists on 'What's My Perversion?', the spoof game show in Woody Allen's 'Everything You Wanted to Know About Sex'. But if I ramble on like this, CZcams mods will bust me for going OT.
      I do think Ida Lupino's career was remarkable. No Brit ever Americanized more flawlessly- many US fans had no notion she was a Limey. She came from a cockney vaudeville family, yet her persona aligns her with the great tough ladies such as Crawford, Davis and Stanwyck.
      Margaret Lockwood, who is unknown in the States, was probably the closest British equivalent, but she stayed home. She co-starred with James Mason in the trash classic 'The Man in Grey'- oh dear, there I go again.

      @esmeephillips5888 Před 4 lety +1

      If you are referring to Four Star, the production company (with Charles Boyer and David Niven, and another whom I can’t presently recall), which she joined to replace Joel McCrea after he left... I was disappointed and disheartened to learn that she was the sole producer who never owned stock in the company. 😔
      I think that company lasted many years, though, so perhaps you are referring to another, previous to that.💙

    I am 77 years old.
    When I was a little boy I saw pretty much this same story on a different program. I'm sure it was a different program because I recall the sets and the actress who played the captive girl. I also remember, very distinctly that she tried to break the window by throwing something at a window, but the item crumbled in her hand.
    It ended the same way, by the captive young woman walked out the opened door which closed as she left, locking the couple in the un LEAVEABLE apartment.
    It made a great, life long impressions on me. I have described the plot and the sets to others many times over the years. I am 100% certain it was a different production.
    Gee, it is spooky to have seen this production. Wow. Such a clear and ancient memory. Wow.

    Ida Lupino is such a fine actress. I really really felt her panic in this episode. I knew there was an explanation for this happening, but I couldn't see it as I was as anxious as she was. I remember her when I was a young-in. I remember I heard she was married to Howard Duff (another actor) & being sad when they divorced. (I was sad when Lucy & Desi divorced too). Ah, nostalgia. (ok, I am 75 this year).

    I like watching these noir-ish episodes, often done like films. Ida was the best...Everybody smokes like crazy, motives are murky, men are up to no good, and women get tangled up in danger. Ah, the old days of real dramatic tv and movies...

    It seems no one else remembered Scott Forbes ("King"), who starred in "The Adventures of Jim Bowie", back in the mid-50s.

    Makes your adrenaline climb very efficiently .I dont care for the details, I was so surprised by the horrific situation, and the "way out" leaves you with kind of sadistic revenge pleasure and own imagination about possible developments. Wow for Ida Lupino, i didnt know she was great also in that kind of story.

    A decent actress, and director!! She's been in many shows and films, that I have always liked. She directed Bogie's "HIGH SIERRA" (1941), a story about someone's that a criminal, but also has a heart. @07:07 there's a cabdriver, played by Gayle Kellogg. I wonder, if any relation to 'Ray Kellogg', director and actor of the same time, period.
