  • The Osun River, from which Osun State draw its name, has been heavily contaminated.
The Osun River has been heavily polluted with mercury, lead, and cyanide due to gold mining activities at the upper course of the river, thereby putting the lives of Osun-Osogbo devotees, diviners, and tourists and community residents at risk of waterborne and cancerous diseases.
If no drastic measure is taken to clean up the Osun River as soon as possible and if a law is not enacted to protect these crucial natural resources and punish future polluters, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove and the 20 communities through which the Osun River flows will continue to get exposed to deadly diseases.
