  • From a small town in Natal to dodging bullets in war torn countries. Al J. Venter has borne witness to humanity’s biggest atrocities of the past 55 years. He is the oldest active war correspondent, and he has reported on over 25 wars. In his memoir he masterfully tells the tales of the wars he covered and the stories behind the headlines and the trip across Africa that changed it all. From rebel groups who came for him, to seeing children die. . . to cheating death ‘at least 20 times’. Al J. Venter has written over 60 books and is a legend in the world of conflict zones. Any video with Hannes Wessels is great. Every video with Al Venter is fantastic.
I'm not gonna play the lottery tonight. Lighting never strikes in the same place twice and, having both Hannes AND Al in the same video is..... let's just say that it doesn't get any better than that. Two most remarkable men. What a bonanza!

I came across Al Venter in Oshikati in 1979/80 and he managed to get into the ops room. Brigadier Badenhorst was so pissed off that security to the ops room was so tightened up it made my job as Skakkel officer for 51 Battalion at Ruacanna a pain in the arse

There is still lots more that need to be said, dont take it to your grave guys. Only 1 or 2 things that was not old news. The West is weak, they are only good in the movies. The Russians need money, the time will come when Rhodesia and South Africa of old will be missed as we were not on the level of brutality of the current 'visitors' of the African countries.

Why do Rhodesians always try to compare themselves with the Portuguese, like in this interview. We in Spain have a saying. “Las comparaciones son odiosas.” The Portuguese were fighting three wars simultaneously thousands of miles from home in territories much bigger then Rhodesia, yet they performed extremely well. Rhodesians were defending their home. The Portuguese never attempted cross border hot pursuit ops like the Rhodesians. They however did one single operation to free Portuguese soldiers held captive in Conakry in September 1970. 200 or so Portuguese marines raided the capital of Guinea and successfully freed all prisioners. That proved that if they wanted they could easily do what Rhodesians did. But that wasn’t Lisbon policies. Finally. The commander in chief of NATO forces in Afghanistan, a British general, considered his Portuguese Light brigade as his heros. I thank his name is David Richards. Al Venter too was impressed by the Portuguese performance in C.A.R. He said so in a recent interview. Rhodesians were fantastic no doubts about that. The Portuguese still are. Comandos, pára-quedistas, fuzileiros it doesn’t matter. They have been in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan. They are in Mali and CAR. Still doing very well too.

Listening to this interview one has a sense of the dark forces weighed against us. Politics in Africa began to stink from the early sixties onward, so there was no place for a White government, like Smith's; but it was exactly what was needed. Not to be, though, not to be.
