    the gibson sg standard 2018 costs around 1300 euros, where the epiphone g400 pro is sold around 350 euros. There s no question, the two guitars do not sound exactly the same, and one can prefer one or the other sound, according to the kind of music he plays, or his setup. IMO the question is : how much you can afford to get a guitar ? We all can agree on one thing... if you dont have 1300 euros to spend, the epiphone is not a bad guitar, far from it. If you prefer the gibson sound, want the 6 magic letters on the headstock.. and have the money.. go for the real thing. bottom line, although all this is pretty obvious, we all love these kind of videos!

      I completely agree yannber, the epi is a great guitar and super value for money. The Gibson does feel much better quality however, if I didn't play in UKDC or need that killer Gibson SG tone I probably wouldn't buy one, certainly not new. Also, for me the 2017 model is the one to get for the 1961 pickups.

But those 61 pickups are amazing. Enjoy.

    I appreciate that you took the time to make this video and the first half was great! I was hoping that this wouldn't be another gear demo/comparison recorded with a phone mic though.
    These mics just aren't able to pick up the frequencies that you'd need to hear to get a proper idea of the difference between the two guitars. That's especially true when the strumming is almost as loud as the amp. As I said though, I still appreciate it!

    • @ukdc-acdctribute1142
      @ukdc-acdctribute1142  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes I agree, I wanted to do a full video that exposes and highlights all of the physical elements and tech specs on both guitars, i have kept the volume low in an attempt to capture as best I can but it never quite gets it, I think it still works as a comparison between the 2 in terms of how different the sound is but it doesn't quite capture the exact sound. I will do another video capturing the sound and I will use my marshal as that is the sound most people are looking for.

    Great video review. I have that same amp and really like the tones I was able to dial in through the app. I have a G-400 Pro that I think is a great guitar. With that said when I play a Gibson SG at the store it’s a big difference.

  • @socialdef3
    @socialdef3 Před 5 lety +6

    I have experience with the G400 worn brown. I own a few Fenders, Squiers and Epiphones and I will say that the G400 is an exceptional instrument. It is extremely versatile and obviously sounds great with high gain but just as great with a clean Fender tube amp. The fretwork is better than guitars costing much more and the tuners and bridge are stable for playing in other tunings without actually losing tuning.
    I'm growing tired of playing around with Stratocasters bridges and even the finicky saddles on most Telecasters and need versatility in tone as well as stable tunings. The G400 worn gives me all of that, and since I don't need to split a hum bucker to get clean sounds, I prefer the worn version, as well as the fact that its a satin finish and not gloss.
    The two Alnico V hum buckers are more than good enough and if you feel the need, you can change out pots and caps and play around with the values to get a clearer tone, especially if you adjust the pickup heights.
    My only complaint is that you have to get used to playing the long extended neck, whether sitting or standing, especially if you don't have an extra wide and padded strap. I never let go of the neck, just in case, and it has become a habit now when playing standing up.
    I highly recommend the G400 to anyone who is learning or for pro use. With the proper setup and a good set of strings, this guitar sings softly or screams.

    Hey Mike, that was a solid and concise comparison. I have to say, like you already have, that it’s really user preference. What’s most significant is that for us Epi players these axes are not poorly made pieces of crap. With modern CNC and standardized quality control, most Epi’s are really pretty rock solid. Besides, everyone’s state of the art iPhones and tv’s are made in Asia, so why would a simple thing like a guitar not be well made overseas? Personally, I would always prefer the glam of the Gibson headstock over anything else, but for less than $50 I can rewire an Epi LP or SG with 500k audio pots, big orange drop caps and vintage 50’s wire. Doing this makes any Epi both snarl and sing like a dual humbuckered, solid bodied guitar should. So, for now, I’m going to stick with my Korean 1994 Epi LP and ‘02 SG, at least until Gibson sponsors me. Besides, I love when the crowd hears my tone and is confused as all hell when they see my tombstone headstock. Keep up the good work and best of luck with your band. Keep spreading the word about Gibson and their very well apportioned Epiphone step brothers.

      Mike Anderson maybe it would help with the neck dive a small amount, I’ve owned SGs and the neck dive is more an issue of the head being too heavy than an issue of the body not being heavy enough. The head is probably lighter on the Epi if I had to guess

You should go to a shop and try them both out, when you play a guitar you will know when it's right. When I bought Gibson SG I also tried out the Gibson SG Special and put it down as quickly as I picked it up, it was awful. It is Light weight compared to les paul and strat, comfortable to play, very good sound, and the best part is it is cheap. I put it to abuse by playing hard without worrying i will damage my expensive guitars. i removed the pick up covers and the sound became more punchy. Very versatile guitar and can achieve many tones due to dual pickup and coil split. However, the weak part are the cheap volume pots. Pots are pcb and failed only in a few months. Some buying advice, if you want a Gibson, save up as best you can and get one, if you compromise with the epiphone it will be a matter of time before you get the bug again and wish you had waited, saved a bit more and bought the gibson. You will keep chasing it until you have one, like an itch that won't go away. Go to a shop and play them both, you will know straight away which one hits the sweet spot. I got my Gibson from a shop, it was on sale for £900!!! I lived off pot noodles until my next payday but well worth it. There are some bargains to be had on ebay but be careful of fakes, ask the seller some questions, they may have receipt of purchase so you know its genuine. Over the last 2 or 3 years gibson have stepped up their game in the SG range. Check the specs of the different models. You can get a 2018 Gibson SG standard second hand from about £600 if your patient and shop around. 2nd hand is the best way to go. The reason I specify the 2018 model is because that's what I have and every year a new one is released which will usually have different pickups. The 2018 model Gibson SG standard is sublime with it '61 reissue pickups.

    I tried an Epiphone SG in a shop a few days ago and I was very impressed given the price. I do have other high quality and expensive guitars but the Epiphone was incredible for the price. It was only a fluke that I tried it because I was trying a pedal and needed a left handed guitar. Could there be variance from one to another? The electronics won't be as good but you can fix that.

      @ukdc-acdctribute1142  Před 4 lety

      A lot depends on how you like your guitar to feel and which years model you look at. With the Gibson sg I have it is a 2018 model which has '61 re-issue pickups in it which are perfect for me as I play in an AC/DC tribute band. The Gibson is lighter and better balanced (doesn't head dive like the epi) I have the epi as a backup which I wouldn't if it was a bad guitar. My advice, if your in a tribute band get the closest match to who you want to sound like. If you are in a band that is busy, does a lot of gigs and you can justify the price difference get the Gibson. If you prefer to mostly play at home then you'd be silly to buy the Gibson. The epi is a good solid guitar, buy the best guitar to suit the purpose.

      @@ukdc-acdctribute1142 I think there is a lot of variance which means you would need to try the guitar first or gamble on ebay. Apparently the pickups on the new ones are very good. It also seems to me like there is a pattern. Epiphone kept improving their guitars then the factory gets moved. First Japan, then Korea, then China and the new ones coming from China seem to have reached a very good level. I'm very suspicious of Gibson. I have a Les Paul that I never use because I have a Heritage H150 which is a superior guitar unless you go custom shop Gibson.

    • @ryanstark2350
      @ryanstark2350 Před 4 lety

      In your case, it makes more sense to to have the real SG. For example, I mentioned the Heritage. That does not sound exactly like a Les Paul and their other Gibson style guitars do not sound the same either. They also all have Seymour Duncan 59 pickups which are different from Gibson pickups. The Heritages are not cheap though and you are unlikely to get a bad one. Epiphones may be more of a gamble.

It may be epiphone but they have Gibson hardware, they have '57 gibson pickups. If a Lee Paul interests you they are worth checking out. They are at the high end for epiphone price but in my opinion every bit as good as a Gibson led Paul standard. There is a review by andertons music on CZcams where they compare the 2, you should check it out. Go sexond hand to save some money. Second hand gibson sg's are more reasonably priced. I think the epi sounds just as good if not better then the Gibson. Gibson is over priced. All your paying for is a name on a head stock and pickups might be a little better. Change them out put in a bone nut for 200.00 dollars or less and you got a Gibson SG.

    yes the 61 pups are great but so are the alnico 2 classics. As for the wiring....Did you notice the size of the wiring in the epiphone?? Its larger gauge wiring...LOL. Did you notice the caps?? The epiphone had I believe Orange Drop caps. Dunno what was in the Gibson. To summarize, yes the Gibson SG is a fantastic guitar and for a third of the price you can get an equivalent guitar from Epiphone. basically, the binding on the neck is about the only real difference. And actually, the guitar should have 57 classics in it but Gibson stopped doing that years ago. Of course the 60s tribute les paul by Epiphone comes standard with Plek'd frets, solid mahogany body and neck with a 4A flamed maple top, 57 classic and 57 classic plus pups, Switchcraft switch and input jack, Mallory pots, Premium locking grover tuners, etc,etc.etc. Gibson makes NOTHING equivilant to the 60's Tribute Plus and even if Gibson did, it would be $5000.00 which is why Gibson is going bankrupt. Buy what you want but dont be foooled into thinking Epiphone guitars are bad, because Epiphone makes some awesome top of the line guitars. of course like any other company they also make some trash. Just check out the DR500 Acoustic or the DR400 or the EJ45. Or the 60's tribute plus.

    Comfort & playability aside, I reckon the Epiphone Pro sounded better. Maybe because of the thicker body. It wasn’t as tinny as the Gibson standard and to my hearing it had a thicker sound and warmer tone

      That's the beauty of it and why it is so subjective. It's all about what feels right to your fingers and what sounds right to your ears. Also with so many different Gibson SG Standards that have different neck thicknesses and pickups etc. the only way you can truly compare is to try them all. In terms of value for money.....you are getting a great guitar with the epiphone. No argument from me in that respect.

    In Canada, the Gibson SG Standard retails for $1500 and the Epiphone SG G-400 Pro retails for $500. Big difference in price. Apples and oranges. I should hope a $1500 plays better. You should get something for that additional grand.

  • @randysnewbiebluesrockguita7782

    I have a Gibson Sg standard Pelham blue and a White Epiphone Sg G400 pro. I can tell the Gibson weigh's a slight bit more than the Epi. but I suppose it is because of the locking tuner's. The Gibson has a 57 at the bridge and a 57+ at the neck, where the Epi has alnico 4 wire pup's. They don't sound all that much different except the Gibson has a more deep sound than the Epi. I adjusted the pick up height on the Epi and it is Now comparable to the Gibson. I like the rosewood fret board better on the Gibby as opposed to the Pau fero on the Epi but they both look great. I gotta say that for the price you can't beat an Epiphone, the G 400 is so close to the Gibson that it's hard to justify the thousand dollar difference. Epiphone is coming out with some really sweet guitar's for 2020 and while a Gibson would be my choice above the Epi. I gotta say that if you took the name off the headstock they would be almost the same guitar.

The ones on my 2018 model are '61 reissues and they pack one hell of a punch. Depends what sound your going for so you have to do your research. The Gibson feels much better to play. Its lighter and the subtle differences in body shape and build quality make one hell of a difference. I just sold an epiphone les Paul 60s tribute which had all Gibson hardware and 57 Gibson pickups and it's an amazing guitar. But the Gibson SG stands tall against the epi. I find it kind of weird that your Epi SG is heaver than the Gibson, My new 2019 Epi SG is about 6 OZ lighter than the Gibson, I wonder how that can be? I have heard that Epi's that are made in China are being made with wood that isn't totally dry and it takes a long time for them to quit shrinking which may be the reason my Epi Les Paul is always going out of intonation, but this wouldn't be the case with it being lighter than the Gibson. . IMO I like the Gibson far better and the paint job allow's the wood to breath, where the Epi, not so much. It sound's better than the Epi and I still don't like the Alnico 4 wire pup's after I adjusted them to my preference, too weak. I had an Iommi SG and didn't really like it so I sold it and bought the Gibson. I also do not "rundown" the epi, I distinctly remember talking about how good the epiphone is, the fact that for me, the Gibson is better does not take away how good I think the epiphone is. I also talk about an epiphone les Paul I have and how incredibly good it is vs the Gibson les Paul so im not quite sure where your comment comes from. My aim is to give honest reviews and direct comparisons, you do not have to agree with my opinions and I respect those who dont, but I am not going to insult my viewers by lying to them. I do agree however that I said I'd try not to give my opinion and failed in that respect but again, I clearly talk about how good the epi is, it's a great guitar.
