  • A tour of Kelso in Scotland, a beautiful market town nestled into the Scottish Borders, famous for it's Abbey, the Town Square, and much more - let's have a Kelso Scottish Borders walk!
Also watch Edinburgh - • EDINBURGH ROYAL MILE F...
Kelso is a fantastic town to visit if you're in Scotland or close to the Scottish Borders. The welcoming market town of Kelso, nestling in the heart of the Scottish Borders, offers so much to see and do in both the town and stunning surrounding countryside. Located in easy travelling distance of Edinburgh, Newcastle and Carlisle, it’s easy to see why Kelso is Bordering on Brilliant.
The welcoming and enthusiastic nature of the locals here make it an excellent holiday destination for those that want to explore the best that Scotland has to offer. Discover more about the activities and events that happen in Kelso throughout the year and the best places to stay in this Scottish market town.
Kelso's main tourist draws are the ruined Kelso Abbey and Floors Castle, a William Adam designed house completed in 1726. The Kelso Bridge was designed by John Rennie who later built London Bridge.
Sir Walter Scott attended Kelso Grammar School in 1783 and he said of the town: "it is the most beautiful if not the most romantic village in Scotland". Another attraction is the Cobby Riverside Walk which goes from the town centre to Floors Castle along the banks of the Tweed passing the point where it is joined by the River Teviot.
Kelso has three bridges that span the River Tweed, "Rennie's Bridge" was completed in 1803 to replace an earlier one washed away in the floods of 1797, it was built by John Rennie of Haddington, who later went on to build Waterloo Bridge in London, his bridge in Kelso is a smaller and earlier version of Waterloo Bridge. The bridge was the cause of local rioting in 1854 when the Kelso population objected to paying tolls even when the cost of construction had been covered, the Riot Act was read, three years later tolls were abolished. Hunter's Bridge, a kilometre downstream, is a modern construction built to divert vehicles around the town and so take much of the heavy traffic that has damaged Rennie's bridge.
Famous people from Kelso have included the suffragette Georgiana Solomon who was born here in 1844, the civil engineer Sir James Brunlees (1816-1892) who constructed many railways in the United Kingdom as well as designing the docks at Avonmouth and Whitehaven. Sir William Fairbairn (1789-1874) was another engineer who built the first iron hulled steamship the Lord Dundas and constructed over 1,000 bridges using the tubular steel method which he pioneered.
Thomas Pringle the writer, poet and abolitionist, was born at nearby Blakelaw, a 500-acre (2.0 km2) farmstead four miles (6 km) to the south of the town where his father was the tenant. Donald Farmer, a Victoria Cross recipient was born in Kelso, as was Ross Ford, who holds the record for the most senior caps (110) with the men's Scotland national rugby union team.
Much of the 1984 film Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes was filmed on location at Floors Castle in Kelso, whose exterior featured as that of the fictional Greystoke Manor.
Kelso features in the traditional folk music ballad 'The Shepherd Lad of Kelso', as well as 'The Old Woman of Kelso', a variation of the ballad Eggs and Marrowbone.
Kelso is first clearly mentioned in 1128, when King David I gave the church at Calchou to French monks from Tiron. The town of Roxburgh was just across the river from his great castle, The Royal Burgh of Roxburgh and Kelso Abbey, it became one of the largest and most important towns in Scotland.

Truly is a beautiful town which would benefit greatly by being reconnected to the Railway system again.

My last name being Kelso, I've always wanted to visit Scotland to learn and study about my ancestors. Such a beautiful countryside in Scotland. I grew up in a small farm town in the state of Kansas, U.S. It's on my bucket list.

That was really lovely, thank you so much…😁🙋‍♀️
I’m Jedburgh born, now 76 years old + my last visit to Kelso was age 12, just before we moved down to Sussex. And I’d quite forgotten how pretty Kelso is.
For all my 64 years in England, 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 even though I have little use for it…I can still speak + write in our Border Dialect!😁
Now I’m off on another one of your tours! 🙋‍♀️😅💕🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Thanks for the great video. As a youngster, I remember my dad driving me from Gordon to Kelso to get haircuts at a barbershop near the town square around 1965-70. Haven't seen Kelso since 1970, but I'd like to go back and check it out. Awesome area for a kid to spend time growing up in.

Hi, just come across your channel. I live in Kelso and am staggered just how many shops have changed hands in just one year. You really should come back at a better time of year when the sun is shining and everything is in bloom. Btw the Border hotel which was an eyesore, has been redecorated but is still to find a new owner.

I was there for 10 years up to 2000, it has changed frontages quite a bit. Never recalled the Border Hotel either!! Good to see the old corn exchange being used too. Great memories of wonderful folk in Kelso

I guess I'm weird too, because earlier in the video I said the same thing about the cars on the cobbled streets. I've never noticed it before and Scotland sure has many cobbled roads. These must be constructed differently? I like the town, it's not such a hustle and bustle one, which I prefer. Another thing that probably makes me weird, but I kept thinking the buildings reminded me of a town made from lego bricks. Odd I know. Love the Cross Keys Hotel with a window box in each window! Thanks for the new adventure for me! :)

Kelso looks very nice and I loved the bells, so good NOT to hear the usual Westminster chimes !! I love hearing clocks strike, and I also like the tyres on cobbles sound !! You had the level of music perfect - yet still able to hear the normal street sounds too - well done on that. Why do ruins always look so eerie ?? loved the fact that it said "open all year" but it was closed 🙂😁
The DPD van was not there when you arrived at the square - it must have heard you calling !! Thsnks for the trip, keep em coming 👍💯🤩
