- As it goes from Spring to Summer, the population grows in your hive and soon you will have to add another box on top and give them room to grow. But when do you do that? And which box do you want to use? I address these questions, plus give you tips on how to encourage the bees to move into this box sooner and what to do if you have a flow hive.

How many CZcams videos have I watched, 2,000? 3,000? This video is the first time I have ever heard the channel say, "...because it will help me make more money." Everyone knows it, but you are the only one to have actually said it. 🙂
THANK YOU very much, first off I absolutely love your voice, its very clear and easy to understand. Your presentation is clear and to the point. I learned quite a few points from this video. Great job.
Thanks so much!! Happy you mentioned the flow hive great videos!🎉
Perfect timing!! I was wondering when to add more boxes. I am also enjoying to beginner's course. Great information.
Thank you SO much for all for videos! So helpful, appreciate it a lot!
Thanks for sharing, always nice to see how others do things 😊🐝🐝
Awesome Larissa great video. Your definitely helping new beekeepers 🇦🇺👍🐝🍯
Great information! Thanks for sharing.
Glad it was helpful!
Hello! New Subscriber Here! Thanks for sharing this very informative video! We had bees 🐝 a while back and lost them to mites and they swarmed on us. Just started back with more bees this year with a mentor bee keeper from Mississippi. Now so glad we found your channel, already learned so much by watching your video. Bee in touch with you often lol Thank you. 😇👍🏻🙌🏻❤️🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝
Great information! Thank you! 🐝
nice. you answered my questions
Glad I could help
Good evening hello I miss your lessons
You answered all my questions! Great information! Thank you!
Great video. We are in our first year of beekeeping and struggling with different opinions/suggestions. It is good to know the process and rationale behind things we do so we can actually make decisions accordingly.
We were given a nice swarmed colony which we put in a deep brood box, queen excluder and a couple of shallow (half deep) supers on top because we were leaving for 2 weeks so thought this way we'd give them enough space. It was early June in UK with exceptionally hot weather too.. we have lots of blossoms around.
On our return, the frames in the supers were entirely empty and the ones in the broodbox had several capped queen cells.
Still now we have not understood why the bees didnt use the space above.. we're told we should have put some sugar syrup in those super frames. Surely for being very intelligent creatures the bees can also be rather narrow sighted
Although you gave worker bees a place to store honey, the queen excluder prevents the queen from having somewhere to lay and that is when a hive swarms. Empty honey boxes does not prevent swarming. Empty space in the brood nest prevents swarming. So next time you plan to leave for an extended time, you should put empty frames (preferably no drawn out comb or foundation) in between the frames of brood in your brood boxes so the bees have somewhere to build new comb and the queen has somewhere to lay.
Thank you so much
Thanks for the very on point info. I love you
Great stuff. I wish you were when I started in 2020.
Yes
When moving a frame of brood up when adding a new deep box, does it need to be capped brood or does that matter what stage they are in? Appreciate your videos and channel. New subscriber and love your videos
It does not matter what stage the brood is in, you just want to make sure the brood frames have a frame of honey (or pollen or just drawn out comb) on either side of them so that the brood stays warm. You always need to make a brood sandwich, essentially.
Love your channel as a first year keeper in a cold climate hardness 6b My question is what is the depth of all the boxes is there a big difference between a small and a medium?
I explain it in this video - czcams.com/video/GWVNuhuIglo/video.html. Hope that helps!
Can I put an empty second deep box on top of first in order to feed with upside down jars of sugar water with a brand new package of bees.
You can! Just make sure those jars of syrup aren't leaking too much or you will have bees drowned in a pool of syrup on your bottom board. I would test it out before you put them in the hive. Even a tiny pool of water will drown bees.
@@BeekeepingMadeSimple thanks, I bought two jar lids from a company called Beeline. This my first hive, I’m trying to absorb as much as possible
Yes
I did this and did not check for two weeks and the bees built comb into the box full of brood and larve.
I wish I would have watched your videos before I dove into beekeeping. Making so many mistakes
Those poor boxes have almost rotted out. Do you really use those for your bees?? Or are they just here for educational purposes?
These are the old boxes sitting around my yard for filming videos. We do not put them on the hives.
You do realize boxes are inanimate right? You can't really feel bad for the boxes lmao
You really need to replace those boxes, those have expired
I know it is common for people to replace things once they are not attractive looking, but if something can still be used, I keep it. I believe it is pretty obvious that there aren't any bees in the box in the video. It is an empty demonstration hive. These boxes should not be used on a beehive with an active colony of bees inside it, but I still use "expired" boxes for things such as educational videos and storing frames. That being said, some boxes can be salvaged by cutting them shorter to be used as a shallow if the broken areas are at the bottom.
@@BeekeepingMadeSimple Yes, I thought you were using them for instructional purposes and in Hawaii everything comes in from Main Land and re-sourcing is a way of life there. I have watched many of your videos and like your simple no nonsense approach. Just keeping to the basics as it's been working well for yrs.
