    That price is actually really good. The TTartisans 50mm f0.95 is about $200 more for only a slightly wider aperture. For an APSC camera, a super wide aperture like this makes for a great portrait lens - equivalent in look to about a 75mm f1.4.

    great video! love the images, they're quite nice, i just ordered one and had a few gift cards so made it cheaper, you're right for moving subjects this will be painful to use, but for portraits or static items, it should be a fun lens to slow things down for me in a busy hectic day. love the metal feel of this lens compared to modern plasticky lens

    If you had to choose would you go for the 50mm 1.1 or the 50mm 1.05 if you want a fun yet cool high fashion artsy type of photo

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  Před 3 lety

      there would literally no visible different between f1.1 or f1.05 - both hard to nail focus well with due to super shallow DOF

  • @gitithadani
    @gitithadani Před 3 lety

    When the Sony A7 series first came out Mitakon (originally Japanese company) made a 50mm 0.95 lens at about 1000$ and a bit heavier. That time the rage with ultra fast lenses had started with Leica selling for 10,000$. The 7 artisans lens also says APO but the CA seems quite terrible from what I have seen in tests of Marc Ahldeff as is sharpness. However those who buy these kinds of lenses is more because of the look. It also has a poor MFD - probably that way it can get better sharpness at further distances - I have used the pentax and canon fd 1.2 (mfd 45) and half the weight) and my feeling is that they might perform a little better optically. These lenses were made to be sharper closed down yet give that ultra narrow DOF. So they worked at all distances and at different apertures. However you have really made some very nice images with the lens which to be honest shows your ability to extract the best from the lens!

    • @PavSZ
      @PavSZ  Před 3 lety

      thank you very much for watching!
      I think there is a lot of better and cheaper vintage lenses than this but this is brand new and a lot of people do not know anything about vintage lenses and don't want to know.
      This lens is surprisingly very good (apart from CA - but even that is easily fixable in post). I had no problem nailing focus wide open. No soft edges or distortion. They really have tried to get it right with this lens and pretty much nailed it.

    • @gitithadani
      @gitithadani Před 3 lety

      @@PavSZ I just enjoy your very pleasant appreciative energy. I think nailing focus on new camera systems has become much easier - given focus magnification & excellent evf-s. Manual focus demands another sensibility - to take time and compose - to pay attention to the relationship between focus areas & textures of out of focus - also to think about DOF and what aperture to use. have had some young photographers boasting how they only work with apertures fully open. The optics of a lens depends on many factors - on different distances of focus - size of object - sharpness at different apertures - textures of blur etc - color tonality etc. Certainly they are aimed at the Voigtlander lenses but the optics is not there yet and the APO label is a gimmick. However Voigtllander is probably the oldest lens company (though gone through many different owners) and hence has over a century of optical design whereas 7 artisans is a young company and hopefully will evolve

    I bought the 7Artisans fish eye for some specialized fun, & that it was cheap; & specialized fun. I'd buy this lens if it was cheaper... as it ticks the other boxes for me; specialized fun. Full manual lenses are (for me) nostalgic, that's why I like them, they give an old feel to a new product... sort of taking me down memory lane, cheaply. That's what I have come to hope for in 7Artisans, a bit of old school manual fun, that's a bit specialized in it's use... & importantly cheap. Why? Because a fish eye is not something I use every day, nor have any hope to use as a professional tool. Likewise this manual 1.05... it's too specialized to take seriously; because it's hard work to use, & as you said there are competitors who make better lenses that are more work friendly for similar prices. If they made it for a hundred less I'd consider buying it... for a bit of fun.

    • @PavSZ

    Thanks for the review, but the conclusion is a little bit weird, if I may say so. The aperture 1.05 is exactly what is superb on this lens and with current 349 USD it maybe actually better deal than vintage lenses, which are more expensive every day.
    Also for the video, when most of the hybrid cameras have that ASPC crop in 4k60, this is fabulous lens, because you can have 75mm 1.5f lens, which is actually still superb. With your f1.8 Nikon lens you'll get f2.7, which is already mediocre.
    Bokeh is actually pleasant too and even at 1.05, if you can nail that focus, this is actually very sharp lens.
    I'm liking it very very much.

    Great review! I do think they are targeting Leica and voigtlander users, so with that in mind it is actually super budget for what it is. I don’t think it can be compared with sigma, Sony or major brands like that cause I don’t think that is their target audience. BUT it is pricey for a lens people may still only use every once and a while if they want a unique shallow DOF shot.

      That lens has bad chromatic aberration (at least when put on a Sony) and is extremely soft at f2.0. I still love it but on a Sony it has many faults. Would need to try this 7artisans lens out before I said one was better than the other but also comparing a 90mm to a 50mm is never easy.

Not to mention the huge size advantage on the L mount vs alternatives, since all the 50mm F1.4s are gigantic.
