  • Mixed Voice - How To Get It -How To Grow It - Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy
    Mixed voice is a very elusive subject.
    There are a lot of opinions on the subject.
    The most important question you can ask yourself is:
    1) Does the person giving the information demonstrate physically what they preach effectively?
    2) Do they have students that demonstrate what they teach effectively?
    Now let's get back to mixed voice.
    There is an area in the voice that has a passageway between our Chest/Call/Belting Register that connects this register with our Falsetto.
    This area is called the Passaggio (or passageway from our chest / call register into our falsetto register).
    This can become pretty confusing and here's why.
    Until we understand how to grow our falsetto register to match the timbre / tone of our chest voice, it leaves a big void in this connection area between chest and falsetto.
    For those that have tried, you will notice a big disconnect in this Passaggio, because the falsetto register cannot handle the "impact of air" when crossing between our call register and our falsetto.
    I like to think of this like a leg or an arm.
    If we're going to kick a soccer ball, we employ the strength of our quad from the upper part of our leg and our calf from the lower part of our leg, however: we have a knee that connect the two. This knee is our "Passaggio."
    If we have not learned to strengthen Passaggio to handle the impact of that soccer ball that connects the quad to the calf, it cannot sustain the impact of kicking the ball.
    So it is with the voice.
    We must grow and strengthen this area in order to do that effectively and safely.
    This brings me to another point.
    If our falsetto is so weak and airy that it cannot match the strength and power of the transition from our chest voice into our head voice, it cannot be sustainable. It will crack and break down, and will not grow in a healthy and consistent way.
    So the chain of command to understand how to do this effectively is this:
    First we must grow our chest voice in a bright and robust manner.
    Then we must grow our falsetto in a bright and robust manner, similar to our chest voice.
    Then we must back off the volume of the sound to gently and gradually work through this "break" between our chest and falsetto registers, in order to gradually grow this area.
    We first want to transition fairly low in volume, to get the feeling of it in our throat. We want to make certain that we are only singing as loud as we can connect, without lop-siding the chest or head voice.
    In other words, DON'Tdon't start the chest out loud, then back off the volume through the passaggio, and then sing loud again through your head voice/falsetto register.
    Keep the volume consistent from chest, through the passaggio, and through falsetto.
    Even if it's almost at a whisper...
    Start small and gradually build this area.
    Connecting early from chest to head helps us understand how to do it, but it doesn't help us much us with growing the passaggio/ mixed voice.
    There is a very specific sequence on how to do this correctly.
    I cover this in my singing course for anyone that is interested.

      my range has not increased, but my headvoice and chest voice are thanks to these now connected. I also am slowly developing a mixed voice. and my note hitting has become tremendously better.
      My belting range has always been E2-C#6, but my comfortable range has increased however. From C3-D5- G#2-A5

    I'm 18, I've been trying to sing ever since I was 15 and I still cannot achieve that mixed voice. I've watched countless tutorials and explanation videos on mixed voice which definitely helped, but for the most part I think I've taught myself to get closer and closer to achieving mixed voice by just trial and error. After teaching myself through many failed attempts, I've watched your video and I am happy that I was going in the right direction... very reassuring to hear that my 3 year effort didn't just go to waste. I may not have been born with talent to sing but I will definitely get there. Considering that I was tone deaf 3 years ago I think I've come a long way now! Some people tell me that I have a good singing voice, which is a compliment I would've never received 3 years ago haha

      I just spent about a million dollars taking vocal lessons for about 30 years. Everybody told me conflicting information on how this all works. I had to sort it all out on stage and in the recording studio to prove out what worked and what was worthless B.S. There is a way to make this work. There are an infinity of ways that are dead-ends that do NOT work. My course shows you, step-by-step how to make it work.

      Hi, Mina! What I am teaching in my course you won't find in any college. They teach you what they learned in a book or a classroom. I teach you what I learned from going all over the world and seeking out the 30 best vocal coaches and singing instructors in the entire world, and it took about 30 years. A great amount of that information was contradictory, so I tried every bit of it out on stages in concerts around the world. I threw out the things that didn't really work and combined the things that did work and put them in the right sequence. What I came up with is like no other course, whether in a brick-and-mortar school, or an online vocal program. Many of those others have "borrowed" from me, so they can say "I teach that" but then they just can't get it right, and instead lead you down their own dead-end path.
      I look forward to you growing your voice and taking advantage of the skills and techniques that have taken me a lifetime to put together. You get the benefit of my 30 years of work and struggle, put into a course that will last you a lifetime, without having to find all of the scattered pieces like I did to put it together.

      Vocal type is more about the color of the voice than the range ... don’t get branded with titles and classifications unless u plan on being a classical or operatic singer... otherwise sing whatever feels comfortable. Ken was singing Michael Jackson songs in the original key . He didn’t sound as light as Michael Jackson because they have different voices making them both unique , nevertheless they both could sing the same notes.

    My earlier vocal teachers always used to talk about "support" but I never understood what it was. I managed to get a strong passage from chest to middle but your explanation--that strong head voice is dependent on a strong chest--finally gave me an understanding of what support is. I still need to build a stronger chest. Thanks Ken!

Other online singing tutorials explain the vocal technique you want to learn, but your singing lessons explain everything around the vocal technique (like you said about "building a house") so that i really understand it. This makes your tutorials actual lessons and i love them. After just a month i can sing much much better, better than i could imagine after just a month. Keep doing what you do because you bring joy to so many people who want to learn how to sing!

When singing a lower note to a higher one a have trouble getting there smoothly but if I sung the two notes separately I can do them fine. It’s not something I noticed until I started watching your videos. I’m probably good at my falsetto simply because I thought that was the issue and kept practicing that thinking it was the problem haha. So thank you for that. I’ll start working on it. I've been doing research here and there, then practicing till what I learned becomes part of my style then studying more. I have a hard time going long periods of time in the head voice, but for a barotone speaker, I think I can get pretty high. When I am struggling with a song, there is something that I've been doing, similar to when he was singing "allang", but not saying that.. I'll explain, but I think it is how to connect the two.
    Edited so the video didn't auto shuffle.
    So, a part of my research involved learning to sing Phantom of the Opera, said that Opera singers hold their trachea in the position of a yawn. So when I'm struggling, I was the song, do a fake yawn and feel my throat, then try to sing without allowing it to slide out of that position. From there, you can do, what seem like mini-belts to freely move theough my vocal range. It is kind of like what James from Metallica does at the end of almost ever line. If you haven't heard the song, you can hear James' noise he makes well at the end of each "yeah" and the start of I Disappear. It is like he uses small exhales to shift where his voice is in his range.
    I hope that makes sense. This still isnt natural to me, but I am working on it.

    Thank you Ken you really are an inspiration. I am 61 and really cannot sing for peanuts. During the last two years I've been learning guitar. Playing simple traditional melodies from Hal Leonard's books - I can't play them well yet but I've noticed that when trying to sing - the guitar really guides me to the correct notes. My objective is to impress my wife and kids with one or two songs. Is it really possible? Do you have a short course for people like me who just want a bit of fun?

The point explained here that helped me was that we can't just jump right into the mixed voice but gotta lay a firm chest voice "foundation" before reaching that middle register. That helped me to hit the A5 I'd always been dying for more effortlessly. Thanks so much.

    This is a really great explanation on how to ascend and descend using a mix of voices starting with the chest as a strong foundation and gently backing off weight and leaning into the higher sounds smoothly. Is the mixed voice a middle register, that uses all resonators? Is the mixed voice something you generally want to stay in to use the power of all resonators?

  • @Silentgravity
    @Silentgravity Před 7 lety +5

    Hi Ken, first of all thank you so much for all the incredibly useful material you are uploading for all of us, personally it has helped me enormously and I'm about to record the vocals on my album.
    There is a question that I'm sure many singers like me would like to be answered but nobody seems to give a straight answer and I would love to hear your valued opinion on this:
    Is mixed voice considered as only a question of resonance in relation to chest and head, for example I could sing in my mixed resonance while chest belting in the C5 zone or is there some sort of "ghost mix third register" during the secondo passaggio where you can sing in? Basically are we technically always either in chest or head register when we sing or not? I sing rock and my secondo passaggio shift lasts only the moment I connect.
    Thanks man, you seriously rock!
    Greetings from London.

    I’m a trans woman, naturally a baritone but needing to sound like a woman to be safe in the world, and watching this made me realize that my feminine voice is the belting register you mentioned, the difference between a masculine and feminine voice from a vocal setup like mine IS that Prima Passagio!! I’ve been trying to find better words for the feeling of reaching above something to achieve both tenor singing and feminine speech, and you’ve given me words to use, so thank you.

    Hope this doesn't sound rude but what's with the tongue? I've only ever seen you do this. Is it to do with releasing tension on? or is it to do with tone or what?

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Před 7 lety +31

      You're not being rude, you're just asking, and that's fine, so thanks for asking. This is the most relaxed position of Open Throat Technique. First you train the tongue flat to the base of the mandible, then concave to the jaw, then in it's most relaxed state it will protrude away from the back of the throat, creating maximum space in the back of the throat for perfect vocal tract shaping (as well as using it in place of hard consonants and glottal stops which become problematic and constrictive especially when singing hard ock).

    • @paulthoresen8241
      @paulthoresen8241 Před 7 lety +2

      Thank you, that's something to practice this week. Trickyfor me to do this without just creating more tension

    • @kentamplin
      @kentamplin  Před 7 lety +12

      It may create tension for you. I didn't get to it myself for years, and it's not part of what I teach in my course. Tongue position, yes, but this particular position, no, it's a bit advanced for most students. If it requires you to tense your tongue, then you're not doing it correctly. It's done through almost total relaxation.
