    I’m from Wisconsin and it hit home when seeing the little baby girl Oaklynn who died because of this storm. I donated to the family but nothing can replace what was lost ! My heart still goes out !!! I remember and still pray for you and those affected!!! 😞❤️🙏

    My aunt, who currently lives in L’Ville, was a Mayfield native. During the outbreak of ‘74, her dress was blown away along with most of her home and she never saw it again. Fast forward to ‘21, the church she wore that dress in was destroyed the same way.

    I can tell you about a group of senior citizens that has been forgotten, as we scattered to at least three states after The Storm. Our management company did what they could to help us find alternative living sites. But we were in subsidized housing, and there is no Section 8 housing left in Mayfield to handles those of us who ALL lost our homes when our building was destroyed. There was an entire complex in Mayfield that was also flattened. It was bigger. We have heard NOTHING about those folks finding new homes. There is little subsidized housing in Mayfield anymore. And our building, which had 61 apartments is being replaced by, we are told, a building with just 15. I moved to Paducah, and that was the closest I could get to Mayfield---25 miles. I have no car, and depend on a pretty good bus system to get around. Grocery shopping is an interesting proposition . We will need support for years to come. None of us who lived in the area before the storm asked for this. We need to be considered in planning for the future. We deserve it.

    • @Weather_Nerd

      We had the same some years ago when a fire ripped through next to our property and burned down 2 neighbors and one abandoned home (where it began), fueled by 25mph winds which definitely was enough to make it rush up our hill. A fire crew from a prison camp came and helped ensure our home was safe and even slept in our yard overnight to keep watch of flare ups (thankfully they stopped the fire before it wiped out our entire small town).
      My wife thanked them and offered them food and water but they declined. We live in a rural forested area and they easily could have run but they didn’t. I myself was doing two years in prison at this time for a drug crime and I can say this much- guys on crews like these are usually non violent offenders and are housed in lower security prison yards or fire camps. They know they are going home within x amount of years (usually 5 or less) and so running would be a huge mistake because at least in my state it will add 1-2 years onto your sentence AND they will place you onto a secure perimeter prison yard. You lose the trust, and you lose the privilege of working off of prison grounds. I was able to do community service picking up trash on hwys and trimming trees + weed wacking them as well during my sentence so I can understand just how much of a privilege it truly is to be afforded the opportunity to leave prison perimeter even for a handful of hours.
      Will also add that I met SO many honest, hardworking, and respectful/kind people in prison and I absolutely did not expect that. A lot of inmates know they messed up and all they want is a second (or third) chance. I pray in time more will learn that they are still human beings that have value in society just the same as anyone else. Not all inmates take rehabilitation seriously but so many do. They are the ones who don’t go back… it was easy to spot the ones who would be back while inside, which is sad but reality. Sorry for the book but I appreciate seeing a comment like yours. We are still people and we love helping others, not because we feel a need to but because we LOVE to

      Doesn’t seem like he did a great job with cov. Not initially. Thank goodness the republican majority vetoed a bunch of the stuff he tried to pull. Aside from that he does seem decent though (and maybe he learned in time with cov, considering we were all confused and overreacting at first). I would probably vote for a man like him depending on who else is running and I am pretty solidly conservative (though I used to be liberal and still hold a few ideals from that side of things too). Neither side is all good or all bad that’s for sure.

    Thank you for doing this documentary. I'm just now getting to where I can watch these from this particular storm. I'm a Moderator on a very popular weather channel on CZcams and we were Live Streaming during this event as we do during most severe weather events - to help warn people and hopefully keep them informed and safe. It was so hard to watch the radars and hear from our Chasers, knowing the utter devastation this was bringing to the people on the ground. We followed this storm system all the way from Arkansas and the chaos it caused along it's path. Then we saw that rotation signature on the radar and my heart just dropped. So late, on a friday night... in December... in Kentucky! It was 3 days after this event before I could sleep again... and I wasn't even directly affected by it! Since then, it's helped me knowing that we helped save lives that night - many have told us publically and privately that they were watching our stream and were able to either save themselves, or family/friends.

  • @SadisticSenpai61
    @SadisticSenpai61 Před rokem +4

    I don't know about Western KY or where Mayfield is in particular, but a quick Google search said that a lot of KY has a lot of clay in its soil - and that makes for both a high water table liable to flood basements as well as making it very expensive to excavate. So that could be a reason for not putting basements in.
    Still not what anyone really wants to hear when homes are being rebuilt after a major tornado. Given how poor the soils in the South are for basements, I think there should be a lot of investments in the safe rooms that OK has found so incredibly useful - their soil is unsuited for basements as well. But ofc that requires money and there's a lot of poor ppl that need those safe rooms the most that have no prayer of ever being able to afford them.

    Wait... He expects that family to take cover from future tornados in that tiny crawl- space? That looks like much too small an area! They need to have an actual basement that's completely underground to be 100% safe from tornadic winds. I would think that they'd make a point of providing an actual underground shelter for folks who already were victims of a nasty tornado, and likely have PTSD from the experience!
    It's just not reasonable to expect them to be okay with that.

Life or death was just a matter of dumb luck. Where you were or what you were in made all the difference. A hundred people lost their lives. Friends, mother's, daughters, father's and sons , old and young alike. The mistakes made were learned from. Hard lessons for the unfortunate ones. May they heal and rebuild but not forget.
