Beyond the Brain: Graham Hancock and Rupert Sheldrake explore the mystery of consciousness

  • Consciousness - we all have it, yet it’s one of the greatest mysteries of science. Exactly what it is, how it works, what it’s for, and what its implications are for our understanding of “reality”, remain matters of speculation, not of fact. In this dialogue, originally recorded for the Beyond the Brain conference series (scientificandmedical.net/beyo...) author Graham Hancock and biologist Rupert Sheldrake (www.sheldrake.org/) offer some food for thought. For background on the censoring of Graham’s and Rupert’s TEDx talks, and links to the original uncensored talks, see here: grahamhancock.com/ted-war-on-.... VISIONARY, the new edition of Graham Hancock’s book on the mystery of consciousness (formerly titled Supernatural) is published in the United States on 4th April 2022. To get a sense of the wide variety of issues explored in VISIONARY check out Chapter Nineteen, free to read online here: en.calameo.com/read/005570974.... And note, whereas the audiobook of Supernatural was read by a third-party narrator, the audiobook of VISIONARY is narrated by Graham Hancock himself. In some ways - to be welcomed - we are reinventing the ancient tradition of storytelling around the campfire, and with this in mind Graham hopes to launch his new podcast in 2022. Fascinating discussion! My Mum died last week in the UK, however I live in Australia. I was woken in the middle of the night by a feeling that someone stroked my cheek whilst I slept. I woke with the feeling that something was wrong yet passed it as a strange dream. In the morning when I woke up properly, I had received a text message from my sister, who lives in the UK, that my Mum had died due to illness. I’m not religious and very open minded, but I think this may have been a final connection from my mum before she left. Can’t explain it, just a weird experience! Thanks again for the great discussion!

I took Ayahuasca only once. In the days and weeks following, I felt the presence of an entity within me. It wasn't frightening. It felt like she was Grandmother, very loving. And from within she directed me to do what I needed to do to regain my health. Very fascinating experience. I was never able to take Ayahuasca again but without a doubt the kind entity (I called her Grandmother) guided me and healed me from within.

I wonder if Graham Hancock has read Proof of Heaven by Eben Alexander. The author is a neuro surgeon who got a nasty, spontaneous case of E. coli bacterial meningitis. He experienced death and describes some of what he saw. After his complete recovery, which was itself nothing short of miraculous (doctors assured his family that at best he’d be a vegetable if he even wakes up), he had the expertise to evaluate his brain scans to conclude that the parts of his brain responsible for dreams and hallucinations were completely dead. Destroyed. Inactive. Offline. While in the meantime he was having an extremely vibrant, indescribably vivid experience. “It felt too real to be real” was his description. He also scientifically rules out the DMT dump myth and concludes that the brain, rather than producing consciousness, serves as a filter for consciousness which reduces the firehose of information from reality to a trickle so we can focus on this very specific spectrum of mortal experience.
I recommend the book. It’s fascinating.

Rupert has helped me so much in viewing theology through the Christian lens. I was raised catholic but drifted from the faith and spent some time looking into the eastern religions and mystic teachings, but listening to people like Rupert helps one realize that there is a faith that exists underneath all religious denominations and that it's quite acceptable to gain your understanding via the traditional Christian route (even if it's not quite on the prescribed path). I find that so refreshing in this time when Christian bashing hasn't just become acceptable but almost fashionable. Thank you Rupert

First off, thank you Graham for decades of life enhancing insights in my appreciation of this carnival of existence. I have far too many thoughts to address re: this discussion, but two key and dominating elements of my perspective follow. 1. We know that what we observe of the universe/existence is limited by both our perceptive organs and out cognitive abilities, so we also know that whatever we my conceive is in fact only a limited description that MUST be insufficient. 2. How can anyone who accepts the canon of modern physics that permits quantum coupling, unmediated action from a distance, and the entire idea of material expression as dependent upon observation, and the influence of that observation on abstract probability matrices so as to define the nature of phenomena, seriously doubt the possibility that there is creative and communicative outcome that exceeds an absolute materialistic reality? We need not overturn the dominance of current dogma to appreciate the totality of our experience where it exceeds the limits of that dogma. Thank you again for your gifts to humanity, and enjoy! BTW, credit where due: your criticism in the last moments was fair, and polite, but a necessary stance for the sake of integrity. You didn't have to do that, and it took courage to not to let it go in passing.

42:50 My thought while Graham went further about brain and consciousness (And i heard this being mentioned in another spiritual talk): A human can be clinically brain dead, while the heart is still being active. Thus the heart controls the brain and not the other way around.
Everyone can control many parts of the body, even the breathing cycle. But it's impossible to actively control feelings and heart rate. I'd say that the heart-"consiousness" takes over as soon as the brain shuts off or is lacking usefulness. E. g. You can try to suppress the feeling of love or hate, but no one can effectively deny either feeling. Maybe someone else can describe it better.
Thus the conclusion is that the consciousness is most likely not one with the brain.
And thanks for the talk, it's great to listen to. Loved it.

I respect Sheldrake's work. However, there are points I would like to address: many of the traditions he mentions were in fact not Christian in their origin, they are atavisms of the pagan past, and were kept alive because they placated the people. Traditions like "All Souls' Day" are not of Christian or Catholic origin, they are remnants of pagan traditions that found their way into Christian belief. It is not just the Reformation that is to blame for the loss of contact to the spirits of the ancestors. The Reformation merely recognized that many of the Catholic traditions and ideas were in fact pagan. For example, the Catholic "purgatory" was inspired by the Greek pagan "Tartarus", which was adopted into the Christian system as a sort of punishing "hell" (which is very different from the pagan "Hades" by the way). The original early Christians had very different ideas, they believed the dead would sleep until the day of resurrection, where they would come alive in their body again, this is not of Protestant origin, but the actual Christian belief.
Christianity was the very tool that was used to control the consciousness of the people over hundreds of years. It was Roman patricians, like the Flavians, and later the so-called nobility of Europe, that designed the Roman Catholic Church and maintained it as system of power and in order to bind the consciousness of the people. Initially it was meant to counter the rebellious Christian and Judaic Messianic movements at the time of the Romans, and it proved to be one of the most powerful tools of control ever contrived in human history.
To anyone interested in this, I'd recommend Joseph Atwill's book "Caesar's Messiah" and to dig into the history of the Flavians, Alexanders, and Herodes families.

I’m sure Sheldrake knows all this. He is a brilliant man. The fact that some of the spiritual truths of early Christianity were co-opted by Imperial Rome as a method of control and the fact that human spirituality as we know it now it now develops from other traditions in no way diminishes the import or authentic nature of spiritual truths which Jesus taught and lived.

That said & true sir, I must, in good conscience, disagree with your position as stated here by you -- re heroin (& other unmentioned) highly addictive, physiologically, spiritually, cognitively --- individually & communally destructive narcotics (i.e. "cocaine & cocaine derivatives, opioids, bath salts e.g.)
While i strongly cleave to non-criminalization & non-judgemental love & care for those whom suffer personhood-destroying chemical & non-chemical addictive experiences, I must & do question your statement on this subject that you have here made regarding such truly destructrive narcotics.

Excellent discussion! Can't wait to hear more like this. I had a dream once where I accidentally broke into the central point that connected the dream worlds. It was Brahma holding a golden egg, and inside the egg was this massive room, lined with hallways and doors that led to various worlds. It was even run by what I presume were angels or spirit guides. They weren't too happy that I was roaming free and they chased me, but I could tell it wasn't a malicious pursuit - they were just trying to help, I think. I slipped away into one of those doors and emerged into some unknown neighborhood and the air was thick with fog. I kind of see that as it wasn't my dream so I couldn't complete the scene from its substrate. It was so real, the dream has really stuck with me. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get back in there. Haha

Hey Graham! Well done putting Christianity on the spot! We may be a species with amnesia... but the things we do remember, we should face and process! Perhaps that is one of the steps toward waking up! Also I'm so excited for your podcast! Thank you so much!

I grew up with some friends who were identical twins the interesting part was that they could communicate telepathically didn’t seem to matter how far apart they were One of then joined the merchant Navy and they could still communicate from opposite sides of the world. You can’t tell me that that’s just pure brain connections, definitely something else

Did they ever do any scientific tests to prove their ability. Would have been pretty easy. Could just put them in two different rooms and ask one what the other was seeing and check via cameras etc. I'm asking because i would love to know more.

I dont know how to explain this but I have identical twins and one day I was sleeping and my baby b stayed with me and my baby A went to the store with my wife. While at the store baby A got a sad look on her face and told mom we have to leave the store now baby B is crying. Wife said ok let's just get these last few items. She was very adamant to please return she agreed. They drove straight home and baby B was at the door crying. Than the same thing happened to me and my mind was blown.
