OMG, this is absolutely one of my favorite books. I had an amazing English teacher my junior year of high school that gave me a deep love for African American literature.
Their Eyes Were Watching God is a great book and more than a romance novel. It’s a very layered novel and Zora Neale Hurston is one of the best writers. Toni Morrison thought as much. If you haven’t read it yet, Jubilee by Margaret Walker is another classic worth reading.
There’s nothing like the audiobook narrated by Ruby Dee. Ohhhhhh wow!!!!!!!! Ruby Dee is amazing!!!!!!! She taps into the raw pure essence and collective soul of African American people of the coastal Southeast. I seriously can attest to it, being originally from the Southeast myself. I’ve seen the movie, in my opinion with what Ruby Dee does with the characters, in relationship to her imitation of them, her precise ability to capture their spirits, accents, is far more superior than what the movie does. The movie water down the true energy of the book. Ruby Dee did an equally superb narration of Zora Neale Hurston’s book Mules and Men.
I have had this book on my shelf for way too long. Going to be my next read. Amandas candles are wonderful. I’ve been burning my Scarlet Letter candle for 2 months now.
I read this book last year and loved it. I had no idea there was a movie version! That's disappointing that Oprah felt the need to lessen the discussion about race and slavery that was so present in the book.
Exhilarating is the word indeed for this masterpiece! I listened to the audiobook this year which is narrated by the late and legendary Ruby Dee and it was stellar! Is the candle still available??? Also, you too fiction reads of 2021 video brought me here. 😄oh and no dialect? Race not mentioned or a part of the movie? Hmmmm I wholeheartedly agree with you that these factors are disappointing, especially if the goal of the movie was to stay true to the book or the author’s purpose.
The candle is still available! It was actually added to the North Ave catalog and the shop just opened today: northavecandles.com/products/theireyeswerewatchinggod
Thanks for the great recommendation like always. This book was on my classics radar, but after watching this video, it is looking like this might be the next classic I read (and then the movie). I like this concept (quick book review vs (and) tv/movie) review.
I read this FINALLY for this year's #MarchOfTheModerns, and was so glad I did! So beautiful. And glad too that I did it as a buddy read with another lady who has a historian background--lucky, lucky me to discuss and expound my understanding with another! 😊
It's a shame that the book wasn’t adapted prior to this adaption. Fredi Washington, Dorothy Van Engle, Hilda Simms, Denise Nicholas, and Lonette Mckee would've all been perfect as Janie. Though I wonder why Lisa Bonet was never considered for the role.
Well, I only just realised by watching this video that "Their Eyes Were Watching God" is a different book entirely from "The God of Small Things"!! Wow, I needed that enlightenment!! 🤦♀
Greeting from the future, Olive! I just read this breathtaking book and loved it. I am SO disappointed that the film adaptation, which I was planning to watch soon, eliminates the dialect (which was lovely and made the story such an immersive experience) AND race, one of the central themes of the book. I mean, I guess if you're Oprah you can do what you want. But I wonder how Zora Neale Hurston, a cultural anthropologist, would have felt about that.
Their eyes were watching God is one of my all-time favorite books! The Audible narration is also fantastic.

I think Zendaya could be a really good Janie if they ever wanted to remake this. It would provide her with the range needed as an actress.
For all these years I actually had no idea what this classic was about. It sounds so right up my alley, adding it to my TBR!

The book and movie are both amazing! Oprah also turned Dorothy west’s book the wedding into a movie with Halle berry worth checking out
I had no idea about the Wedding, checking it out now
Thank you so much for highlighting this American classic

I adored this book in high school!
Another book I need to put on my want to read list.
I just finished this, thanks for the recommendation!

For some reason I was getting this and the Color Purple confused. I don’t know why.
A CLASSIC!!
