Show to older children. Give them thirst for discovery. You know when you do Ancestry, it’s not about naming names, establishing dates, there are offshoots....history has history, trails to follow. We give them voice when we do this--(can't say "work"-its joy).
      Opposite is always true....
think....my granduncle was carrying a flagpole on Jan 6; he was attacking his countrymen and desecrating the Peoples House. That’s the opposite of joy and it’ll be rediscovered by some poor relative.

    the absurd illusion of
"white supremacy" & economic uncertainty being one of it's contributing factors....
another is - ignorance which festers and becomes hate & additionally
some people ( so sadly) need to hate someone & feel like someone is

I am working on my ancestry and I've gone back 12 to 15 generations on many of my branches. I was talking to a friend from Wales, and we realized that these are just names and we have no idea what color our ancestors are. We make a lot of assumptions based on where they come from. I found a bunch of Native Americans from the Montauk and Mohawk tribes in my tree. There were some painted portraits of those ancestors and one woman who is my 14th great-grandmother looked African black because of her hair and features. These ancestors were from the 1500s to the 1600s. My theory was that if I could get back far enough, I'd find all 5 major races in my tree. Eventually, we can find our common ancestors. I was excited. I am the sum total of all those who contributed DNA to create me. Same for all of us. We are all cousins. Food for thought.

Pizza night, discuss what was seen. Play -act, oh, you probably won’t be interested in this, but let’s watch a little......

You're not the only one Elaine to experience an awakening to American history in this fashion. We don't teach our own history in our schools because it's distasteful or whatever word we'd want to use. It's only been within the last 60 years or so, one generation's worth of time, that we just started allowing people of color to be served in the same fashion, through the same door, at the same table as 'regular' patrons. We are in no way 'there yet' and that is what we struggle with all the time because we ASSUMED that we were integrated and accepted and that we had passed and succeeded at that.

    • @georgewest8468
      @georgewest8468 Před 3 lety +6

      @@Jazzman-bj9fq Very true, that.
My secondary school years lasted from 1945 to 1957 and remember nothing being mentioned about the black American experience except to hear about the black heroes who had great accomplishments like George Washington Carver and the underground railroad that demonstrated the heroic efforts of white people to show Southern blacks the road to Canada.
All of the western movies treated native Americans as the bad guys, a fact without merit I eventually found out.
We had 2 black families in the 5,000 person community I grew up in and their skin color had nothing to do with our friendships.
My hard lessons about slavery and the present conditions of white supremacist racist treatments blacks still horrify me.
I still don't understand Xtian treatment of Jews because the first testament of their bible of idiocy comes directly from the Talmud and Torah, all written by Jewish Rabbis through the many centuries of Judaism. White evangelism really sucks for all non whites.

Yes, well unfortunately we weren’t considered people. So, there was no regard for family at the time of kidnapping or generationally in America. African languages were illegal to be spoken in America. Speaking an African language was punishable by cutting your tongue out of your mouth. Plus, various tribes were lumped together so frequently no one spoke your particular African language as there are hundreds of them.
Children/adults sold to wherever alone. During great migration separation happened again.
No attempt has ever been made to help African- Americans identify origin or family.

He dissected 4000 horse hairs, to discover that all horse colors (flat, shimmery, light and dark, etc) are caused by different sizes and arrangements of one molecule: melanin, the same molecule that colors the skin of all people. That sort of puts racism to shame, eh?

I am from the West Coast. I was an adult before I realized how many if my classmates from elementary school through high school were either Hispanic or Native American. I saw them in school as, " Oh, she's artistic, or he an excellent athlete."
Never once did my parents point out that you could tell some people's race by their surname.
Now I live in the deep South. and my African American neighbors tell their relatives that I'm a "cousin".
I use public transportation. I have pointed out that we really are all different shades of brown. (Beige being in the brown family.)
Wouldn't the world be a better place if we taught all of our children to list the ways we are the same? To see our sameness instead of our differences?
That is how I raised my child. When she was 3 years old, she had friends that were in their 80's and even one in his 90's who regularly got a hug from both of us.
And she had friends all of her life that were of various races. One day a Caucasian kid was making fun of an Hispanic friend of hers at their high school. She kicked the less than nice boy in the butt and told him about his small mind!

I remember reading Prof.Gates' book,"Finding Oprah's Roots" what seems like ages ago,and his work is utterly fascinating and vital. Science is answering many of our biggest, oldest questions. Our DNA is revealing the network of connections running through all of humanity. I always felt sadness that African Americans couldn't join in with all other ethnicities in sharing their story. Prof.Gates' work may go a long way towards healing that injury. Bravo!

"Racism is an already-read text" -- that's a great description! And I realize it also applies to political categories in the US today. So if someone is told that a person is "liberal" or "conservative" there seems to be an entire mini-biography implied, but it's usually a completely false document.
When Skip Gates said to Walter Isaacson, "Thank you, my brother" I felt moved, and realized how meaningful it is to have a black American call someone like me -- a white American -- brother. It happened to me just a few years ago that a black girl who lives in my neighborhood called me "brother" in passing. I felt wonderful. It also happened a long time ago in Berkeley, right across from the UC campus, that I called a black guy "brother" and he turned and said, "I'm not your brother." That hurt. So I've benefited from having both of those experiences, and Walter's experience that got onto the video just added to my sense of connection.
