Hi James as someone who lost their dad at Christmas to sepsis I just want to add that sepsis is not rare. (Contracting it through popping a spot may be) 48,000 die every year. 1 in 5 who develop sepsis will die. Sepsis kills more than breast, colon & prostate cancer combined. The teen at the start survived because his Dr spotted the signs early. The last teen was in septic shock (low blood pressure) this is when the organs shut down and irreversible damage is done. (Even if they somehow survive) people who survive will likely suffer from post sepsis syndrome. This can vary from person to person on the severity. Some even need organ transplants. The sepsis trust charity have lots of info if anyone is interested. Please, everyone, educate yourself on the symptoms of sepsis. It can develop from any bacterial infection not just an external wound. Sepsis is your immune systems overreaction to infection. Sepsis is often a silent killer and every minute counts. If you show even one sign of sepsis please say to the Dr, paramedic, nurse anyone "could it be sepsis" 1 hour can change the outcome.
James I'd massively appreciate if you could add a link to the sepsis Trust UK charity in your pinned comments. They are on a mission on behalf of all the survivors and bereaved from sepsis to get the signs out there. Sepsis deaths are tragic because they are treatable and many heathcare professionals still miss the signs so the public need to be more aware of it. 1 in 3 still wouldn't treat sepsis as a medical emergency according to the trusts findings. This needs to change so lives can be saved❤

My son even wears them to _school_ now … they even have cute little shapes. Saw a couple of girls in the high school with the star ones. I mean, I’ve even worn one out in public before without any thought to keep me from touching my face.

In the years that I worked in diagnostic microbiology, I only saw this once. It was sepsis in a young man with extremely bad acne. If you absolutely must pick a pimple, wash your hands and clean the area first (isopropyl alcohol is good). Pierce the top of the spot with a needle (also cleaned with alcohol) and squeeze GENTLY. If you have a cystic pimple and you squeeze too hard, you can burst the cyst inwards, spreading bacteria into your deeper tissues and blood vessels, and this is when you can run into some very real problems. You can also introduce bacteria into your blood stream by picking a pimple with dirty hands or if your face is dirty when you pick. Always get medical attention sooner, rather than later. Once a pathogen gets into your bloodstream, it's possible to die within 24 hours. As you say, James, it's very rare. But not impossible.

    • @Sleipnirseight
      @Sleipnirseight Před 10 měsíci +43

To add an even better tip to this - instead of squeezing, simply apply an acne patch. It sucks out all the gunk without applying any pressure or trauma, and keeps the area protected and sterile (obviously, wash your skin before applying the patch). These are serious game-changers for treating and healing pimples.

@@livo326 Wow, that's quite interesting! I guess I'd be quite nervous to full on bathe in diluted bleach since it'd come into contact with the internal regions of one's private parts. My own skin is super sensitive and easily angered so I tend to be quite cautious, I only use gentle products (+ hypochlorous acid to sanitize my skin.) It's interesting that those with eczema can tolerate a chemical as harsh as bleach, even if diluted. Also, I assume the purpose of the baths are to rid the skin of harmful bacteria? But wouldn't doing so also strip the rest of the skin of the good bacteria that aid in protecting the skin from damage and water loss? I'm curious to learn more about this!

    • @soapeater800
      @soapeater800 Před 10 měsíci +17

@@lovingheize as someone who has been living with eczema my entire life, I've done a bit of research over the years, and I think I can offer an explanation for you! Eczema is associated with the inability to produce a certain protein responsible for skin's barrier function, resulting in overly sensitive skin, to the point where it starts to react to one's own natural bacteria. Dividing it into "good" and "bad" bacteria is a bit reductive, since both are necessary to keep things in balance. Which is why, for some people, bleach is more preferable, since it kills everything in equal measure, unlike antibiotics, which are likely to prioritize some bacteria and cause an imbalance. Which is why hospitals can just douse everything with bleach without anyone developing any resistance to the stuff, again unlike antibiotics.
Now, obviously, the recommended amount is not enough to burn your skin off or anything, and (though this is strictly my experience) the whole process is painless. You do have to wash everything off and apply a moisturizer, but that's the usual practice after any bath. It has helped me calm my severely itchy skin, when the alternative was just scratching the entire thing off my body.
Hope this helped in clearing up some of your questions!

Like so many others in the comments, I never thought this was true until it was. And it happened to me. About 5 years ago I tried to pop what I thought was a regular pimple on my right cheek. I went in hard, way too hard. Cut to roughly 4 days later, I woke up with half my face 50% bigger than it's normal size. Went straight to the ER and was diagnosed with staph and an abscess that needed to be treated with intravenous antibiotics. Not going to talk about the state of my face at this point, but it wasn't pretty. Miraculously it healed perfectly and these days you can barely tell, there's just a tiny, tiny indentation in my face. But man was that a wake up call when it came to taking care of my skin. These days, I try to put pimple patches on whenever I feel the need to pick at my skin. Be safe everyone

A few days later, the underside of my chin because swollen, tender and I had a painful lump. I thought the lump was just a swollen lymph node because my body was fighting off a cold or something, so I almost didn't go to a doctor. I'm glad I did see a doctor because I had cellulitis. I now have an indented scar where the pimple was. I never thought anything of popping pimples before that, it was a huge learning experience.

I had a staph infection on my face back in college (unsure if MRSA or regular staphylococcus aureus). We were handling staph bacteria in lab class and I suspect it was due to waxing my face the night prior that the bacteria was able to easily take over. The day after, I woke with crusty oozing skin on my upper lip. I saw the campus dermatologist who told me I had eczema (really? Overnight?) and to just wash my face with cetaphil. The day after that, the infection spread to my eye which had swollen almost shut. The emergency physician told me immediately it was staph, prescribed me Bacitracin ointment and it took me a couple weeks of recovery and I used up the whole tube.
Moral of the story, if you have a hunch on your own diagnosis and get shooed away, get a second opinion asap. And, if you practice hair removal make sure to sanitize your skin and all the tools you use. The risks of shaving and waxing really aren’t taught enough.

My face started swelling up almost immediately. I would look in the mirror of the dressing room and it was as if I could watch it get worse as the minutes passed. After an hour, I frantically drove home and by the time I got there (about 30 min drive) my face was just like Laurens and did eventually get worse. The “triangle of death” is a term used by paramedics and morticians referring to the space in people’s bathrooms between the bath, toilet and sink. It’s sadly very common that when someone is seriously injured or dies in their bathroom, they’re wedged into this space. If someone falls into it, they can easily become trapped. It can actually cause their death due to positional asphyxiation, or in extreme cases they’re trapped without help for so long they end up passing away. It’s extremely difficult to remove someone from it. For paramedics it limits the in-situ treatment they can administer, and makes it very hard and potentially risky to move the patient out. In the event of a death, the funeral home who come to remove the deceased can really struggle to get them out of that space too, particularly if they’ve been there long enough for rigor morris to set in. Sometimes removals are done solo (especially out of hours) so one person trying to remove a trapped body is a nightmare. That’s what the Triangle of Death is.

I haven't had this exact problem before, but I did get cellulitis in summer 2020. It all started with me getting fowl mites from holding my chickens-gross, I know. They can't survive on humans for long, but they do bite and cause irritation.
Well, I didn't realize right away that I had the mites and I accidentally scratched way too hard. That damaged the skin on the side of my torso, which quickly developed an infection. The rash I got was bright red, hot, and had a ring around it. It was growing steadily, too. My mother urged me to see a doctor ASAP and luckily, I was able to see someone via Zoom since this was during the early days of Covid in the US. I had to take some serious antibiotics and use a topical steriod gel, IIRC. Not something to mess around with!

Something for men specifically to keep in mind: nicks on the face while shaving can have the same effect. Speaking from experience, unfortunately. Not my own experience, but that of a patient I met while working at a dental ER as a dentistry student. Deep head and neck spaces are no joke

Not from spots but my doctor was worried that I could pass away from Cellulitis/Perichondritis that nearly progressed into sepsis due to a badly pierced/embedded piercing.
I wound up becoming clammy and tachycardic and it had spread to bone behind my ear (which at that point i was told there was nothing stopping it from reaching my brain).
Overall, it took 2 weeks of the strongest IV antibiotics, multiple scalpel cuts and packing inserts to drain, surgery to open up my ear, remove and wash granulation tissue as well as a further 8 months of strong oral antibiotics and 1-2 visits per week until i was completely out of the woods.

My relative actually almost died from popping a pimple on the chin. The doctors said it was because she tried to pop it with dirty nails. Her face had swollen up and she couldn’t breathe. She now has a huge scar on her chin.

My mum used to suffer cystic acne. One day she woke up with a spot on the inside corner of her eye and nose just under her eyebrow. She said it was extremely painful and after 2 days her eye was so swollen she couldn't see out of it. When she went to the doctor he sent her to hospital straight away. Turns out through the cystic pimple she got golden staph (staphylococcal) and she was close to going blind as it had travelled behind her eye and toward her brain. Mum never popped it so it wasn't an open wound however staphylococcal naturally loves inside your nose. This has happened 2 times in the last 10 years and doctors have no idea how the staphylococcal got into mums blood without the open wound. I also nearly lost my daughter when she was 7 months old due to a hospital drilling into her bone as she was severely dehydrated (also their fault) and in the process gave her blood poisoning. They drilled once in one leg and twice in the other. It's a very long story but we are so thankful she was transferred to a different hospital where she was in ICU for a while and they saved her life. She's now 10 and we have never gone back to that hospital.

Ive seen a lot of comments from people with dermatillomania and it just reminds me how common this experience is! I felt like that with my trichotillamania and its actually a lot more common than people think, and a lot of people have pulled their hair out at least once compulsively. All im trying to say is dont feel like ur a freak or alone with it cause ive felt like that before but ur not!

In high school I was hospitalized with cellulitis on my face. It most likely stemmed from picking a cystic acne spot next to my nose, and it swelled up and got really hard.
Originally they gave me antibiotics, but once I didn’t respond to the antibiotics they had to hospitalize me to administer them intravenously. The big concern was that the cellulitis had grown closer to my eye. I think I ended up staying in the hospital for nearly a week.
Years later I also had MRSA on my arm, probably originally from a spider bite.

I have a skin picking disorder, so i do stress about this all the time. I usually dont get pimples in the triangle area, but when i do i try to remind myself of how harmful it can be to pop that. Since i get wounds easily i wash anything open right away… maybe thats why i havent gotten sick from pimple popping. But i do think ill end up getting hurt eventually.

My dermatillomania got me into trouble twice in one month. I guess my immune system was not having it, cause under a lot of stress I got a whole heap of health related problems while finishing my bachelor’s degree. First was a stye, you should NEVER touch that, but I did and quite badly - I was finishing my thesis in a rush, pulling all-nighters, which led to me stress picking. At some point my eye and half of my face was swollen and in pain. I was so scared and felt very guilty, I really thought that if I lose my eye I deserve that. Second time I popped a pimple on my chin, which led to an infection and doctor had to cut it open, after telling me it could easily go to my brain because of it’s location, which was scary af. It was also really painful, I couldn’t talk or eat without pain. I consider myself lucky getting only a small scar after that.
I still pick at my skin, I really don’t know how to deal with that problem, but I’m definitely much more careful about hygiene and possible risks now.

I actually know a guy who developed an infection in his brain and nearly died, was in ICU in a coma, due bacteria entering his skin in the triangle of death in his late teens! Luckily he survived but he did say it left him with some neurological after effects. There was also a teenager who died of sepsis in the UK some years back due to a new lip piercing. It’s great to see more information being spread on sepsis the silent killer - it is easily treatable if caught early it’s all about knowing the signs and acting fast! Great information while reminding everyone this is still extremely rare and not to develop any anxiety over this just to do your due diligence with injectors and know the signs ✌️

Wasn't there also advice to not pull out hair from your nostrils for the same reason? The follicles are different from normal external skin follicles but as you mentioned, the follicles are not built to be traumatised, they are supposed to shed the hair naturally. Snip don't pull! My son had meningitis as a newborn, he recovered like a trooper. I also had two blood clots a few years back, not fun and a race against time.

When I was a preteen in the 70s (yeah, I'm old) I met a woman who was a fiction writer. She and her husband were a writing team, with dozens of published sci-fi books to their credit.
Her husband got a pimple in his nose which of course, like any normal person, he picked. It got infected, and the infection traveled right into his brain.
Long story short, he was left with profound brain damage. It left his IQ unaffected, but screwed up a bunch of other things. He also erroneously blamed his wife for his condition, flying into a rage whenever she tried to see him.
It was pretty devastating for her to lose her best friend, lover, and business/writing partner in one stroke of fate. She was a really, really nice person. I hope she found some happiness and success in the years after we met.

I remember one day picking a spot on my face, don't remember where, and then went to have breakfast before getting ready for school. I did this a lot as I had really bad skin as a high-schooler. I started to feel faint and hot, my dad noticing how pale I was(which is saying something as I'm already really pale). I told him how I felt and he got my mom up to see what we should do. After about 10 minutes I felt better so I decided to go to school, my parents said I could stay a bit long just in case but I decided just to go. I honestly felt fine the rest of the day so I have no idea what happened but think it was definitely connected to the spot picking

Good lord, if this video gets people to stop picking at themselves, then it's worth it. I'm obsessively picking at my nose (I've always know I shouldn't), and never thought about this. I've recently learned about pimple patches from you (they didn't exist when I was a teenager), and they are really helping me break the habit. Related story: my mother lost her finger to a long-term infection from being scratched in the garden. Some freak water-borne bacteria that just sat encapsulated under the skin for a few years until she injured her hand and the trauma caused the bacteria to be released into the tissues. They treated her with antibiotics for a year until they finally had to amputate the whole affected digit, joint and metacarpal. So I should know better! DUH! Anyway, thank you for the information.

Absolutely brilliant post James like you I have botox regularly and once a year I have filler in the tip of my nose and bridge, where my reading glasses have made a dent. My aesthetic nurse tells me to do the pinch test for around a week after, for 5 seconds pinch on bridge of nose ,watch for it go from white to skin coloured, if it doesn't to go back and have filler removed. I had it done in harley Street the 1st time and they never told me about pinch test. I was scared. Not scared enough to have done multiple times. This is why when you find a fab aesthetics clinic you hang onto them .thank you for highlighting this,as alot do not even think about it. 💚
