The early 90's was the era I started music in College. Couldn't afford an MPC back then (It was a mystery). We had the KORG DDD-1, ALESIS HR-16B and later the ROLAND R8. ENSONIQ ESQ-1, KORG DS-8, M1 and ROLAND D50/D-70 series. Those were the days
This takes me back to highschool. I'd heard "I Want Her", "Just Got Paid" and "My Prerogative" before Guy came out. By then I knew who Teddy Riley was. I'm listening to Frankie Crocker on WBLS in New York and he announces "Groove Me" by Guy featuring Teddy Riley. My jaw dropped because that was the first RnB record I heard with so many Hip Hop samples in it. Then the Jane Child remix of "I Wanna Fall In Love" caught me. Eddie F and Nevelle Hodge made a few NJS joints that I loved as well. "Somebody For Me" by Heavy D, "Aint Too Proud To Beg" remix by TLC, Love Thing by Intro. I could go on. Your tutorial was on point but you left out one MAJOR aspect of New Jack Swing..............Orchestra Hits and the New Jack Swing pack has a couple.
For so long, I was wondering what this genre was called. But two years later I finally found out the name and Its forever a style ill love forever and want to see more of but in more innovative ways
This brought back a tone of memories. The way you presented this was superb. You painted an Ol’ Skool vibe and demonstrated it perfectly. Excellent job my dude.
@Ave Mcree Not only did I grow up in this Era of music, dancing at Skating Rinks and all that, but this is one of my favourite docs on the subject. The song that personally roped me was "Guy - I like" and anything the group Hi-Five made ever! My appreciation for New Jack Swing is directly connected to some of the best moments of my early life. Thank you for making this video. Sold!
@@AveMcree Man thats not only a core childhood experiance of mine, it's also the first place I ever played SFII. New Jack swing was playing in the background. what a time it was to be alive brotha, smh man...
This is very informative. It is nice to get an overview of the history and important figures for New Jack Swing, and this video is well edited. Thanks for sharing some of your knowledge!
Congrats for not getting deleted 😄. Thanks for the 90's reminder, which is always a good starting point for making music. "Prince" also sounds very "New Jack" on many of his songs. Generally a very creative time for beats. Also the beginning of DNB, which was (and still is) my cup of tea.
You make really great videos Ave, I traded my MPC live for the MPC Key's 61 it's beautiful, I don't miss the live at all although it looked nice keep up the good work Ave
This tutorial is just as smooth and fiery as your jacket! 🙌🏾🔥👑 New Jack Swing requires high quality clothes capable of handling dance floor sweat lol 😂🔥🎯💯😎♥️ RIP Bernard Belle
Great video Ave keep them coming! A great subject for the next one could be Moodymann's 90's output including Forevernevermore .. His groove and sampling techniques are amazing and learning a bit of how it was done and how to do it on a modern MPC would be great!
Def brought me back!!! Bro love it one of my favorite Christopher William songs is everything little thing like the bridge part in that song is one of the best bridges every
I got my 1st piece of 😺during that era lol. Rayon Kwame Polka dot shirts , Hugo Boss jeans, wit a fresh pair of Travel Fox's n 2-3 sprays of Malibu Musk for men. Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiid I knew I was gonna be knockin some boots after going to those 16-21 nightclubs.😂😂
barely clicked in my head that Fresh Prince Theme / Parents Just Dont Understand is New Jack Swing 😅 🤣 and it only clicked when i heard that snare, horn and "yeah" sample. Then i started to think about the In Living Color theme and Crystal Waters smh 😂 anyways this video was put together nicely 👍🏿
Can any of my NJS junkies help me out? I remember buying a 12” track back in the day, I’m sure the track on side A was called ‘Personality’ and the B side was the same track in Spanish. It was a New Jack Swing banger but I can’t remember the specifics. Lyrics might be, “I love her, her body but most of all her personality.” Any help would be so appreciated. ✊🏾🔥
I'm a 100% sure you're looking for nesto velasquez's personality it should be the first result on here, I think you can find the Spanish version from there if you're also searching for it. hope this helps!! It's a very nice track.
Yo Ave , how much would you charge me to spend a weekend with you an tutorial how to produce your favorite top 2 genre on what ever you want you feel at the moment. I need some fellowship. I’m Preston
New Jack Swing had its moment back when I was heavy into buying music... I'm not feeling it because while the drums improved from all those 80s Ndugudugudugu Kashif type electronic drums, they still had that stiff, overly compressed feel for my taste. So I didn't buy too much NJS. I'm back at PeeWee's dance and Just Buggin in my retrospective. The closest to New Jack Swing I wanna get to (tonight) is Doo Doo Brown...then... Square Dance Rap!
Interesting to see your tutorial .... but those 80s drums made me uncomfortable in the 90s as a kid and today they make me cringe ... but the warm& soulful pads are great
New Jack Swing and Hip Hop Soul were the last great genres of black music because they were the last to articulate BLACKNESS, this current music masquerading as black music is some weak AF corny ish pushed by these soulless milquetoast culture vulture mofo’s with an agenda to replace BLACKNESS with pure ignorance…
Damn you came in heavy with this. Image is extremely important. How we’re represented in modern music is terrible. Our youth is detached from the elders and it shows. It’s a shame because once they get older is when it’s understood.
What do you guys think about this documentary style of music theory tutorials???
I prefer this yes
This was really fun, keep them coming! I liked how you put together the Organ Stabs! Very creative!
That was dope! It definitely had that late mid to late 80s and early 90s sound.
Love it! New Jack Swing, my era! Grew up on it and still love it 🙌🏽
This def it. I want to see more videos like this.🫡💯

I loved new jack swing. It was a short lived genre, but it had a big impact on pop culture
It also inspired and shaped up the future of pop and dance and RnB music in the 90s to early 2000s
It really wasn't. It just transitioned in a newer form.

New Jack swing is the underrated sound of the 90s
It will be forever appreciated
I wouldn’t say underrated but definitely under appreciated.
For so long, I was wondering what this genre was called. But two years later I finally found out the name and Its forever a style ill love forever and want to see more of but in more innovative ways
It's not underrated at all. In fact, it is celebrated.
I'm doing a hybrid of New Jack Swing and glitch hop @@AveMcree
The 90s🔥🔥🔥You just had to be there!!!
Thank goodness I was there

😂yeah I was doing a short video on this anyways but didn’t like how the live was jacked
Awesome video!
Hey man I dug this one, it is easy to forget how much I jammed on that peak new jack swing era back when I was little and all music was so new.
You make really great videos Ave, I traded my MPC live for the MPC Key's 61 it's beautiful, I don't miss the live at all although it looked nice keep up the good work Ave
Yeah, the 61 makes it difficult to come back to the Live 2. I usually practice playing on it and the touch strip.
I saw GUY twice in London in the 90’s. Love my NJS to this day. ✊🏾🔥
Bruh…..🔥🔥🔥! Keep this series going man! When I get my MPC, 16 Levels will be top choice for Drum Packs.
Man I loved this video. I was 17 when Groove Me dropped.
